Introduction

About MBBS in Asia

Asia takes the largest share of Indian students who go abroad for medicine, and the reasons are practical: flight times measured in hours rather than half a day, English-medium teaching, and in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka a curriculum and clinical case mix close to what an Indian medical college teaches. India does not publish a register of its medical students abroad, because the Ministry of External Affairs has told Parliament that students do not register with Indian missions. The clearest available measure is the FMGE. Of roughly 79,000 candidates in 2024, about two thirds studied in Asian countries, led by Kyrgyzstan (15,135), China (14,214), the Philippines (9,967), Kazakhstan (5,018), Bangladesh (2,822) and Nepal (1,809), against about a quarter in Europe including Russia and Ukraine. That inverts the general picture of Indian students abroad, which is dominated by Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

The Asian destinations split into two families. The South Asian route, meaning Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, awards an actual MBBS on a five plus one or four-and-a-half plus one structure, regulated by councils (BMDC, MEC, SLMC) whose standards Indian families recognise, with food, culture and climate that need almost no adjustment. The Central and East Asian route, meaning Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and China, offers government universities at lower tuition with large established Indian student communities, but the degree is a local physician qualification rather than an MBBS, and the programme structures do not always line up with India's rules. The Philippines sits apart with an American-style bachelor's-plus-MD pathway in a country where English is an official language.

Top Destinations

The Top 7 Asian Destinations

Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most practical destinations for Indian students: a five-year English-medium MBBS followed by a one-year rotating internship, with doctor registration and college recognition handled by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council under the BMDC Act 2010. Since 2023 a separate Bangladesh Medical Education Accreditation Council handles programme accreditation, and foreign-student admissions run centrally through the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), not DGHS. There is no entrance exam. Selection is on Class 10 and 12 GPA in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, applied through DGME's annual circular with a USD 100 application fee. Government colleges set a near-perfect bar (aggregate GPA 8.0 on the 5-point scale summed across SSC and HSC); private colleges ask for 7.0. Indian applicants compete inside a SAARC quota that recently ran to about 22 MBBS seats across every government college in Bangladesh combined, while private colleges may fill up to 45% of their seats with foreign students. That is why almost every Indian student in Bangladesh is in a private college. Note that NEET is not needed to be admitted in Bangladesh, but you must have qualified NEET for the degree to be usable in India.

Nepal

Nepal is the closest and most familiar option, with an open border under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, similar food and culture, and English-taught teaching. Uniquely among popular destinations it awards an actual MBBS, over 5.5 years: four and a half years of academic study plus a one-year compulsory rotatory internship, per Nepal Medical Council rules. Colleges run under Tribhuvan University (8 colleges), Kathmandu University (11), Purbanchal University, and eight autonomous health-sciences academies and institutes such as BPKIHS and KAHS which award their own degrees. Around 27 colleges offer roughly 2,635 MBBS seats in total.

Philippines

The Philippines is one of the largest and longest-established destinations for Indian medical students, with an American-style system and English as an official language of the country under Article XIV, Section 7 of the 1987 Constitution. The Association of Philippine Medical Colleges directory (March 2025) lists 78 medical schools. There is no IELTS or TOEFL requirement. Be clear about the real duration. The structure is a pre-medical bachelor's degree (compressed to 1.5 to 2 years for Indian students, or 3 to 4 years on the standard Philippine route), then a four-year MD, then a separate one-year post-graduate internship after graduation, centrally matched by the APMC.

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan sends more graduates to the FMGE than any other country. In 2024 it was the single largest source, with 15,135 of roughly 79,000 candidates appearing, ahead of China (14,214) and Russia (11,276). Kyrgyz universities teach medicine as a five-year English-medium programme (six years in Russian or Kyrgyz), awarding the Kyrgyz Vrach qualification in specialty 560001 General Medicine, rendered as "MD" or "Physician." Admission is also not "direct on Class 12 marks." NEET-UG is legally mandatory for Indians, and WDOMS records entrance examinations as required at International School of Medicine, IUSM, Salymbekov, Adam University, Eurasian International, International European and Jalal-Abad International.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan offers English-medium teaching at government universities, a large Indian student community, and no IELTS requirement in most cases. But the programme structure needs stating accurately, because the "five plus one" description that circulates widely does not exist in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan reformed medical education from the 2019-20 academic year. In KazNMU's own words, internship and master's study were merged into a single six-year integrated programme, replacing the previous "5 (bachelor) + 2 (internship)." Graduates receive an MD/MSc, meaning a master's degree plus the physician qualification, after which residency is a mandatory further stage before licensing.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has become one of the most popular and affordable destinations: a six-year, English-medium programme at government medical universities, recognised by the NMC when the university is WDOMS-listed. Low tuition (total costs of roughly ₹24–37 lakh), no separate entrance test beyond NEET, and short, cheap flights — Tashkent is under a three-hour flight from Delhi — have drawn thousands of Indian students since English-medium programmes opened to international students.

China

China has long been one of the largest destinations for Indian MBBS students: a six-year, English-medium programme (including a final internship year) at Ministry of Education approved universities, whose degrees are valid for the FMGE/NExT when the university is MoE-listed and NMC-recognised. Large teaching hospitals give broad clinical exposure and fees are moderate (roughly ₹20–40 lakh in total) — but students must learn Chinese (HSK) for the clinical years, and only MoE-approved, NMC-recognised universities count.

Evaluation

How to Evaluate Any Asian Medical School

If a programme passes all six checks, it's worth considering. If it fails any one, walk away — regardless of price.

NMC Recognition Status

Verify the university is on the current NMC-recognised list at the time of admission. If not listed, the entire premise fails regardless of prestige.

WHO WDOMS Listing

The university must appear in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Without it, ECFMG eligibility is at risk and USMLE is closed off.

English Medium Throughout

Verify classroom teaching, exams, and clinical rotations are all in English for the full course — in China and Central Asia a local language (HSK, Russian) is still needed for patient interaction, so ask exactly what is taught in English.

ECFMG WFME Accreditation

Keeps the USMLE pathway open. Increasingly important as families think long-term about US specialty training.

FMGE / NExT Pass Rates

Ask for outcomes data — in Asia it varies sharply by university within the same country. Where universities are reluctant to share, treat it as a signal.

Clinical Exposure Quality

Which teaching hospitals, patient volume, specialties represented, and hands-on time during rotations. A degree is built in the wards.

Program Structure

How Asian medical education is structured

Most Asian destinations follow a five-plus-one or six-year structure — five years of academic and clinical training plus a one-year internship — that satisfies the NMC's 54+12-month rule, though the exact shape varies by country.

Why Asia

Everything You Need to Know

No other region gets a student home faster or more cheaply. Kathmandu has nonstop flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Varanasi, with Delhi to Kathmandu at about 1 hour 40 minutes. Dhaka has nonstops from Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad, with Dhaka to Delhi about 2 hours 35 minutes. Nepal shares an open border with India under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, so Indians travel visa-free, though a passport is still needed for air travel and for college paperwork. Tashkent is about a three-hour nonstop flight from Delhi.

Food & Dining

Indian Food, Always Available

Food is where Asia beats every other region, and the reasons are structural rather than promotional.

In Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka the local cuisine is close to Indian home cooking: rice, dal, roti, fish and vegetable curries, with the same spice profile and the same street food. Vegetarian, halal and Jain requirements are straightforward here, and campus cafeterias serve a default menu that already looks familiar.

In Central Asia and China the picture is different but workable. The large Indian student communities have produced Indian messes, grocery stores and restaurants around every major medical university, and hostel kitchen facilities fill the rest. Bishkek, Tashkent, Almaty and the larger Chinese university cities all have Indian restaurants and spice suppliers. Vegetarian eating takes more planning in China than anywhere else on this list, because the default cuisine uses meat stock widely, so most vegetarian Indian students there cook for themselves at least some of the time.

Affordable daily meals. In South Asia the menu is already close to Indian food; in Central Asia and China it is not, so check whether vegetarian options are labelled.
