How to Apply
Admission to ZJU's English-taught MBBS is through the ZJU International School of Medicine, by online application and interview, based on strong Class 12 (PCB and Maths) results and English proficiency. It is not decided on NEET, but Indian students must have qualified NEET to be eligible later for Indian licensing.
Applicants need Class 12 with at least about 70% aggregate in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology; Indian students must also hold a qualifying NEET-UG score, mandatory for later Indian licensing.
International applicants apply online to the ZJU International School of Medicine with academic documents, passport and proof of English proficiency (IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 75, waived for English-medium/IB/A-level students).
Shortlisted applicants attend an online interview; admission is decided on high-school performance, English proficiency and the interview, on a rolling basis.
Selected students confirm the seat (a first-year tuition prepayment) and receive the admission letter and JW202 form for the visa.
Students apply for the Chinese student (X) visa with the admission documents and complete a medical check.
The English-taught MBBS begins in the September intake at the Yiwu campus.
Applicants need Class 12 (or equivalent) with a minimum of about 70% aggregate in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, plus English proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 75, waived for students from English-medium schools or with IB/A-levels). For Indian students who intend to practise in India, the National Medical Commission's norms also apply: a minimum of 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories) and a qualifying NEET-UG score.
Subjects:
ZJU-ISM requires applicants to be under 25 years of age. For Indian students, the National Medical Commission also requires that they be at least 17 by 31 December of the year of admission.
International applicants apply through ZJU-ISM with academic and English-proficiency documents. Indian students also need a valid NEET-UG score, and should be prepared to learn some Chinese (HSK) for the clinical years and Chinese licensing.
English MBBS + Some Chinese
The MBBS is taught in English, but students study Chinese (HSK) alongside it, needed to communicate with patients during clinical rotations and for the Chinese medical licensing exam.
NEET for India Licensing
NEET is not part of ZJU admission, but Indian students must have qualified NEET-UG before starting to be eligible for the FMGE/NExT and Indian registration later.
There is no UCAT-style entrance test; ZJU selects on academic record, English proficiency and an online interview, and the English-MBBS intake is small and competitive.

Legacy
ZJU's medical school has a distinguished faculty of academicians, including national leaders in epidemiology and neuroscience. The figures below are genuinely and verifiably connected to the school.
Li Lanjuan is one of China's most eminent physicians, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an epidemiologist and hepatologist at ZJU's First Affiliated Hospital. She invented the Li artificial-liver support system and became a national leader in China's response to SARS, H7N9 avian flu and COVID-19, and is widely credited with recommending the Wuhan lockdown. She is a household name in China and won multiple national science awards.
Duan Shumin is a distinguished neuroscientist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a former Dean of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. His research on glial cells and neural signalling has advanced the understanding of the brain, and he helped build ZJU into a leading centre for neuroscience.
Huang Hefeng is the current Dean of Zhejiang University's medical faculty and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a specialist in reproductive medicine and assisted reproduction. Her research on reproductive health and the developmental origins of disease has had wide clinical impact.
Teaching is delivered by ZJU's medical faculty and its renowned Hangzhou teaching hospitals, with many academicians of the Chinese Academies of Sciences and Engineering. The medical faculty is led by its Dean, Professor Huang Hefeng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Housing
ZJU provides on-campus dormitory accommodation for international MBBS students at the Yiwu campus, at a low annual cost, so students can arrive with housing arranged.
The Yiwu campus provides international-student dormitories at about RMB 8,000 per year (roughly ₹92,000), with an individual bedroom and a bathroom shared among three, air conditioning, internet and laundry.
Dormitory rooms are furnished with the basics and located on campus, close to teaching and facilities.
At about RMB 8,000 per year, on-campus accommodation is very affordable, and Yiwu and Hangzhou are cheaper than Shanghai or Beijing.
Students who prefer more independence can rent private accommodation near the campus, still at a moderate cost by Chinese standards.
Yiwu is a global small-commodities trading city with a large international and South Asian community, so international students find a familiar environment.
China is generally very safe for students, with low street crime, and campuses are secure and supervised.
The ZJU International School of Medicine supports foreign students with arrival, orientation, visa and housing matters.
Dormitory places should be arranged through ZJU-ISM when confirming the seat, as part of the admission process.

Thanks to Yiwu's large international-trader community, Indian and vegetarian food is more available here than in most mid-size Chinese cities, alongside a wide range of Chinese cuisine.
The campus canteens serve a wide range of affordable meals, including vegetarian options; Chinese campuses often also have Muslim (halal) canteens for students who need them.

Practising in India
An Indian graduate of ZJU who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. ZJU's English-taught MBBS satisfies the NMC's English-medium condition, which is a genuine advantage, but the NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities, so each student must meet the conditions.
Step 1
Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. NEET is mandatory both to study MBBS abroad and to sit the FMGE/NExT.
Step 2
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a course and internship of at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same institution, an English medium of instruction (which ZJU's MBBS satisfies), and a degree that entitles the holder to be registered as a physician in the country of study. Note that to be licensed in China itself, graduates must pass the Chinese medical licensing exam, which needs Chinese (HSK).
Step 3
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.

Fees & Financial
ZJU is one of the more affordable elite China options, and several scholarships exist. Realistic financial planning still matters, but the overall cost is lower than at Fudan or SJTU.
The English-taught MBBS tuition is about RMB 42,800 per year (roughly ₹4.9 lakh), around ₹30 lakh over six years, plus low-cost on-campus accommodation (about RMB 8,000/year) and Yiwu/Hangzhou living costs, so the realistic all-in cost is about ₹40–48 lakh over the six years, notably cheaper than Fudan or SJTU.
