Admission Process for the English MBBS

Admission to JLU Bethune's English-taught MBBS is through Jilin University's international admissions office, based on Class 12 (PCB) results and English-medium requirements. It is not decided on NEET, but Indian students must have qualified NEET to be eligible later for Indian licensing.

Academic Qualification

Applicants need Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and good marks (typically at least 50% aggregate in PCB). The Norman Bethune Heritage and Faculty

The medical school's identity is built around Dr Norman Bethune, one of the most revered foreign figures in Chinese history. Its faculty today includes academicians of the Chinese Academies. The figures and facts below are verified.

Dr Norman Bethune (Namesake)

Dr Norman Bethune (1890-1939) was a Canadian thoracic surgeon who joined the Chinese Eighth Route Army during the war against Japan and, in 1939, helped found a frontline medical school, writing textbooks and training army medics. He died that year of an infection caught while operating on wounded soldiers, and is one of the most revered foreign figures in China. The school was named in his memory in 1940 and carries his name to this day; he is its heritage figure, not an alumnus.

A Heritage of Service

Rather than a list of celebrity graduates, the school's story is its Bethune-inspired tradition of medical service and its role, since 1939, in training doctors for China, now including a large international student body studying medicine in English.

Founded in 1939 by Norman Bethune

The medical school began in 1939 as a frontline army medical school founded with the help of Dr Norman Bethune, the Canadian surgeon serving with the Chinese Eighth Route Army. After his death that year, it was renamed in his memory as the Bethune School in 1940.

Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences

The school grew through the following decades into Bethune Medical University and then Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, one of northeast China's leading medical universities, keeping the name and the humanitarian legacy of its founder.

FMGE & NExT Details

An Indian graduate of JLU Bethune who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. JLU Bethune's English-taught MBBS satisfies the NMC's English-medium condition, which is a genuine advantage, but the NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities, so each student must meet the conditions.

  1. Step 1

    NEET Before You Start

    Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. NEET is mandatory both to study MBBS abroad and to sit the FMGE/NExT.

  2. Step 2

    Meet the FMGL 2021 Conditions

    The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a course and internship of at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same institution, an English medium of instruction (which JLU Bethune's MBBS satisfies), and a degree that entitles the holder to be registered as a physician in the country of study. Note that to be licensed in China itself, graduates must pass the Chinese medical licensing exam, which needs Chinese (HSK).

  3. Step 3

    Clear the FMGE / NExT and Register

    Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.
