Shanghai Jiao Tong University is ranked about 47th in the world (QS 2026) and its clinical medicine is number one in China and around 55th in the world. Its School of Medicine runs a Ministry-of-Education-approved English-taught MBBS and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so Indian students can pursue the NMC FMGE/NExT pathway, subject to meeting NMC conditions. Note that a WDOMS listing is not WHO approval, and the NMC does not approve individual foreign universities.

How to Apply
Admission to SJTU's English-taught MBBS is through the university's International Students Office by a comprehensive review of the application, with no entrance examination, based on strong Class 12 (PCB) results and English proficiency. It is not decided on NEET, but Indian students must have qualified NEET to be eligible later for Indian licensing.
Applicants need Class 12 with excellent results in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, given SJTU's selectivity; Indian students must also hold a qualifying NEET-UG score, mandatory for later Indian licensing.
International applicants apply through SJTU's International Students Office with notarised transcripts, passport, English-proficiency evidence, a personal statement, a health form, a non-criminal record and a bank certificate (about RMB 100,000, roughly ₹11.5 lakh), and pay the application fee (RMB 800, about ₹9,000).
SJTU selects by a comprehensive review of academic record and English proficiency (no entrance exam); the English-MBBS intake is small and competitive.
Selected students receive an admission letter and JW202 form for the Chinese student visa.
Students apply for the Chinese student (X) visa with the admission documents and complete a medical check.
The English-taught MBBS begins in the autumn (September) intake in Shanghai.
Applicants need Class 12 (or equivalent) with excellent results in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, given SJTU's selectivity, plus English proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 75, waived for students from English-medium schools). For Indian students who intend to practise in India, the National Medical Commission's norms also apply: a minimum of 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories) and a qualifying NEET-UG score.
Subjects:
SJTU's brochure requires applicants to be aged 18 to 30. For Indian students, the National Medical Commission also requires that they be at least 17 by 31 December of the year of admission.
International applicants apply through SJTU's International Students Office with academic and English-proficiency documents and a financial certificate. Indian students also need a valid NEET-UG score, and should be prepared to learn some Chinese (HSK) for the clinical years and Chinese licensing.
English MBBS + Some Chinese
The MBBS is taught in English, but students study Chinese (HSK) alongside it, needed to communicate with patients during clinical rotations and for the Chinese medical licensing exam.
NEET for India Licensing
NEET is not part of SJTU admission, but Indian students must have qualified NEET-UG before starting to be eligible for the FMGE/NExT and Indian registration later.
There is no entrance examination and no UCAT; SJTU selects on a comprehensive review of academic record and English proficiency, and the English-MBBS intake is small and competitive.

Legacy
SJTU's medical school has a landmark clinical heritage, above all the 'Shanghai cure' for acute promyelocytic leukaemia developed at Ruijin Hospital. The figures below are genuinely and verifiably connected to the school.
Wang Zhenyi was a haematologist at Ruijin Hospital and a former dean of the predecessor Shanghai Second Medical University. He pioneered all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) differentiation therapy for acute promyelocytic leukaemia, turning one of the deadliest leukaemias into a largely curable disease. He won China's State Preeminent Science and Technology Award and the Future Science Prize, and his work is celebrated worldwide.
Chen Zhu is a haematologist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a student of Wang Zhenyi. With colleagues at Ruijin Hospital he helped develop the combination of ATRA and arsenic trioxide that cures most patients with acute promyelocytic leukaemia, and he later served as China's Minister of Health from 2007 to 2013.
Chen Saijuan is a haematologist and cytogeneticist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering at Ruijin Hospital. She was a key figure in unravelling the molecular basis of acute promyelocytic leukaemia and in developing its molecular-targeted therapy, part of the celebrated Shanghai leukaemia cure.
Professor Fan Xianqun is the current President of SJTU School of Medicine and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. An internationally recognised ophthalmologist at the Ninth People's Hospital, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Shen Xiaoming is a distinguished paediatrician and a former dean of the school, known for his work in child health and developmental paediatrics before moving into senior public leadership. He reflects the school's tradition of leadership in Chinese medicine and public health.
Teaching is delivered by SJTU's medical faculty and its renowned Shanghai teaching hospitals, with many academicians of the Chinese Academies of Sciences and Engineering. The School of Medicine is led by its President, Professor Fan Xianqun, an academician and internationally recognised ophthalmologist.

Housing
SJTU School of Medicine provides on-campus international-student accommodation, and there is a large private-rental market in Shanghai, though rents are high by Chinese standards. Housing should be confirmed with the university's International Students Office.
SJTU offers on-campus accommodation for international students at about RMB 21–40 per day per person in a double room (roughly RMB 7,700–14,600 a year, about ₹88,000–₹1.68 lakh); places can be limited and should be applied for early.
On-campus rooms are furnished with the basics and located close to the medical campus and teaching hospitals in central Shanghai.
Students can rent private rooms or apartments in Shanghai; rents in this global city are high, so budgeting and early searching matter.
Shanghai is one of the most expensive cities in China for accommodation, well above budget Chinese destinations, so plan finances carefully.
The medical campus is in Huangpu district (227 South Chongqing Road), central and very well served by the Shanghai metro, close to the teaching hospitals.
Shanghai is regarded as a very safe city with low violent crime, comfortable for international students.
SJTU's International Students Office supports foreign students with arrival, orientation, visa and housing matters.
Because Shanghai is costly and on-campus places can be limited, arrange accommodation early through the university.

Practising in India
An Indian graduate of SJTU who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. SJTU's English-taught MBBS satisfies the NMC's English-medium condition, which is a genuine advantage, but the NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities, so each student must meet the conditions.
Step 1
Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. NEET is mandatory both to study MBBS abroad and to sit the FMGE/NExT.
Step 2
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a course and internship of at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same institution, an English medium of instruction (which SJTU's MBBS satisfies), and a degree that entitles the holder to be registered as a physician in the country of study. Note that to be licensed in China itself, graduates must pass the Chinese medical licensing exam, which needs Chinese (HSK).
Step 3
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.

SJTU is a premium, high-cost option in an expensive city, though scholarships exist. Realistic financial planning matters because the all-in cost over six years is high.
The English-taught MBBS tuition is about RMB 75,000 per year (roughly ₹8.6 lakh), around ₹52 lakh over six years, plus a registration fee, insurance, accommodation and Shanghai living costs, so the realistic all-in cost is around ₹90 lakh to ₹1 crore-plus across the six years.
