Historic university building in Slovakia

Over a Century of Academic Tradition

Modern medical education in Slovakia began in 1919, when Comenius University and its Faculty of Medicine were founded in Bratislava, the country's oldest and largest university. Slovak medicine also honours Ján Jessenius (1566-1621), a physician of Slovak roots who performed the first public anatomical dissection in Central Europe in 1600, and after whom the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin is named.
