Important: Unlike direct-entry MBBS systems, US medical schools admit students only after a 4-year bachelor's degree, so the MD is a graduate (postgraduate-entry) programme.

Academic Qualification
Students must have a solid foundation in the sciences and a recognised 4-year bachelor's degree (pre-medical coursework) before applying to an MD programme. Medicine in the USA is graduate entry: a bachelor's degree, the MCAT, then a four-year MD. In 2025, 43 US medical schools accepted international applicants, and 845 of 3,404 foreign applicants got a place (AAMC). Most expect at least a year of study at a US college and proof of funds for all four years.

For Students Planning to Return to India: A US MD does not meet the NMC's rules for practising in India. The NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 ask for at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same university. A US MD is a four-year course taken after a bachelor's degree, and the first year of work after it is a hospital residency, not an internship at the medical school. So a student admitted after 18 November 2021 cannot sit FMGE, the exam a foreign medical graduate takes before working in India, with a US MD. The route a US MD opens is practice in the USA: the USMLE, the US licensing exams, and then residency. The NBEMS FMGE bulletin still lists an exemption for doctors who hold both a medical degree and a postgraduate qualification from the USA and are registered there. The same bulletin says students admitted after 18 November 2021 are judged under the FMGL rules, so this is not a route to plan an India career around.

Study Visa
Student Visa Overview
International students study in the USA on an F-1 student visa. Once admitted to an SEVP-approved medical school, the F-1 process runs through these steps:
After you accept an offer, the SEVP-approved school issues Form I-20, the certificate of eligibility that confirms your admission and programme details.
Pay the mandatory SEVIS I-901 fee and keep the receipt. It registers you in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System and is required for the visa interview.
Fill out the online DS-160 non-immigrant visa application, upload your photo and print the confirmation page with its barcode.
Pay the F-1 visa application fee and schedule your appointment at the nearest US embassy or consulate.
Attend the F-1 interview with your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, passport, financial proof and academic documents.
Once approved, plan your travel. You may enter the USA up to 30 days before your programme start date and present your documents at the port of entry.
