Recognition & Prestige
Astana Medical University is a respected government medical university in Kazakhstan's capital. Its strength for international students is recognition and affordability rather than global ranking: it is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and its graduates are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification. Honestly, AMU is not ranked in the main QS World University Rankings, so it is a reputable national institution rather than a globally ranked one.

How to Apply
Admission to AMU for Indian students is direct and NEET-based. AMU selects international applicants through an online interview and online tests in Chemistry and Biology, and its own admission rules require a NEET certificate from Indian citizens. Importantly, AMU accepts applications directly through its admission committee, and fees are paid only to the university's official bank account.
Applicants must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and English, and must have a qualifying NEET-UG score; AMU's own admission documents require a NEET certificate from Indian applicants.
The General Medicine programme and its internship need to meet the NMC's duration and same-institution conditions, which matters because AMU lists a 7-year term.
Apply directly through AMU's admission committee with academic documents and passport, paying fees only to the university's official bank account; foreign applicants take an online interview and online Chemistry and Biology tests.
Eligible students receive an admission letter, and Indian students obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate now expected before starting an MBBS abroad.
Students apply for the Kazakhstan student visa and pay tuition only to AMU's official bank account in tenge (AMU warns against paying intermediaries).
Students enrol at the start of the academic year and complete arrival formalities and a medical check in Astana.
Applicants must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. The general requirement is a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together (with the standard relaxation to 40% for SC/ST/OBC and other reserved categories), in line with the National Medical Commission's eligibility norms for studying MBBS abroad. AMU also assesses applicants through online Chemistry and Biology tests.
Subjects:
Applicants must have completed, or will complete, 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the year of admission, in line with the National Medical Commission's rules for MBBS.
Indian applicants need Class 12 with PCB, a qualifying NEET-UG score and NEET certificate, an NMC Eligibility Certificate, a valid passport and the supporting documents. AMU adds an online interview and Chemistry and Biology online tests; no IELTS is required for admission to the English track.
NEET & Online Tests
A qualifying NEET-UG score and NEET certificate are required by AMU for Indian applicants, alongside an online interview and online Chemistry and Biology tests.
Apply Directly, Choose the Track

Programme Structure
Kazakhstan reformed its medical education, and AMU officially lists General Medicine as a seven-year programme, taught in English for international students, moving from basic sciences to clinical study and an integrated internship. The exact structure and internship arrangement matter for Indian licensing.
Total Duration:
7 Years (AMU's official General Medicine term)
Degree:
Physician (General Medicine), the MBBS-equivalent Kazakh medical qualification
Years 1–2
The pre-clinical foundation years, taught in English, covering the core basic medical sciences with laboratory and early clinical-skills work, and Russian language alongside for the clinical years:
Years 3–4
The para-clinical and early clinical years, introducing disease mechanisms and clinical subjects with training in Astana's national medical centres:
Year 5
Senior clinical study across the major specialties, with increasing hands-on hospital training under supervision:
Years 6–7
An integrated internship phase completing the reformed General Medicine programme; for FMGL 2021 the internship should be completed at the same institution and the qualification must entitle practice in Kazakhstan.
Clinical training takes place in Astana's national medical centres and AMU's developing university clinic, followed by the internship phase. For Indian students, a further internship in India is required for Indian registration (see the FMGE & NExT section). An indicative pattern is:
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Years 3–5 | Clinical training in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry and the specialties in Astana's national medical centres |
| Years 6–7 | An integrated internship phase completing the reformed General Medicine programme |
| Back in India | Indian graduates clear the FMGE and complete the required internship in India before registering with the NMC or a State Medical Council |

Legacy
Over six decades, Astana Medical University has trained doctors for Kazakhstan's capital region. This section focuses on the university's documented figures and heritage.
Professor A. R. Rakhishev, a Candidate of Medical Sciences and anatomist, was the founding organiser of the institute in 1964 and helped establish medical education in what is now Astana. He is remembered as a founding figure of the university.
The university honours senior Kazakh physicians and scientists in the names of its departments and research institutes, including Professor G. V. Tsoi (surgery) and academicians such as Ye. D. Dalenov and Zh. Kh. Khamzabayev, reflecting a strong local clinical and research tradition.
Rather than a list of celebrity graduates, AMU's story is its role since 1964 as a principal training ground for doctors in Kazakhstan's capital region, now teaching international students in English.
Teaching is delivered by the university's schools and departments and Astana's national medical centres, with a developing university clinic and simulation centre. The university is led by its Chairman of the Board and Rector, Professor Anar Turmukhambetova.

Cost of living
Astana is a modern capital city, so living costs are moderate but a little higher than smaller Kazakh cities, and students must budget for very cold winters. Here is an approximate monthly breakdown for a student (this is separate from tuition).
| Cost Component | Approximate Amount (per month) |
|---|---|
| Accommodation (hostel) | ₹6,700 – ₹13,500 (US$70 – US$140) |
| Food & Groceries | ₹9,600 – ₹16,500 (US$100 – US$170) |
| Transport & Personal | ₹2,900 – ₹5,800 (US$30 – US$60) |
| Heavy Winter Clothing & Utilities | ₹4,300 – ₹9,600 (US$45 – US$100) |
Average monthly living cost (excluding tuition)
₹21,000 – ₹40,000 (US$245 – US$470)
Housing
Astana Medical University offers hostel accommodation for its international students, and there are also private rental options in Astana, all at a moderate cost by Indian standards, with heated buildings essential for the cold winters.

Food & Dining
Astana has a growing Indian student community, so some Indian and vegetarian food is available, alongside local Kazakh and Central Asian cuisine, though options are fewer than in Almaty.
Hostels and Indian messes serve Indian food, including vegetarian meals, so Indian students can eat familiar home-style food; this is often the main source of Indian food given Astana has fewer Indian restaurants than Almaty.
Astana has a small number of Indian restaurants catering to the student and expatriate community, though there are fewer than in Almaty.
Kazakh and Central Asian food is hearty and affordable; while it is meat-heavy, vegetarian options such as breads, rice, salads and vegetable dishes are available in a modern capital city.
Local markets and supermarkets stock fresh produce affordably, and Indian grocery items and spices are available in some shops, so students can cook their own food.
Hostels and rented apartments typically have kitchen facilities, the most economical option for students who prefer to cook their own vegetarian or home-style meals.
Location
Astana Medical University, Beybitshilik Street 49a, Astana, Kazakhstan
Nearest Airport
Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ), Astana; Indian students fly from Delhi to Almaty, then take a connecting flight to Astana (about 7–8 hours in total; Tashkent is another connection). Kazakhstan is 30 minutes behind Indian time
Local Transport
Astana has buses and taxis and a compact, modern layout, so students can travel around the capital and to the national medical centres, though the extreme winter cold makes indoor and heated transport important
Your Roadmap to Success
The Physician (General Medicine) degree from Astana Medical University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, opening licensing pathways in India, the United States and other countries.
Indian graduates can appear for the Indian screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), complete the required internship and register with the National Medical Commission, provided they qualified NEET before starting and meet the NMC's licentiate conditions.
Graduates are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification and sit the USMLE, opening the pathway to residency and medical practice in the United States.
Graduates can also pursue licensing in the UK (through the GMC's PLAB route) and other countries, each with its own screening or licensing requirements.
After qualifying, graduates can pursue postgraduate specialisation in India (through NEET PG, or NExT once it starts), in Kazakhstan or in other countries.
A recognised, English-medium medical degree gives graduates the flexibility to build clinical careers in their home country or internationally.
Understand the Medical Licensing Pathway
A clear overview of the exams and requirements after graduation.
Practising in India
An Indian graduate of Astana Medical University who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. The NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities; it sets conditions, and the Kazakh degree-structure choice is central to meeting them.
Step 1
An Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. AMU itself requires a NEET certificate from Indian applicants, and an NMC Eligibility Certificate is now expected before starting.
Step 2
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require the course and internship to meet the NMC's minimum duration (about 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship), completed in the SAME institution, taught in English, with a degree that entitles the holder to practise in Kazakhstan. Because AMU lists General Medicine as a 7-year programme with an integrated internship, its structure is what decides whether these conditions are met.
Step 3
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.
Student Life Style
Being a medical student in Astana is a mix of demanding study and life in a modern, safe capital city, with the major adjustment of extremely cold winters.

Fees & Financial
Astana Medical University is an affordable, English-medium option, though its official tuition and seven-year term mean the all-in cost is higher than many quoted totals, so realistic planning matters.
International students pay tuition of about 3,000,000 KZT per year (about US$6,800, roughly ₹6.5 lakh), and over the official seven-year General Medicine term with Astana living costs the all-in cost is roughly ₹65–85 lakh, still far less than a private MBBS in India or a UK medical degree, but more than some totals quoted online.
Financial planning focuses on budgeting tuition, hostel, living costs, travel, heavy winter clothing and one-time costs across the course. Our counsellors can help map the full budget, and can help you apply directly to AMU, which accepts applications through its admission committee, with fees paid only to the university's official bank account.
Indian students can often fund the course through savings or an education loan; the modest total cost makes loans easier to service than for high-fee destinations. We can guide families on documentation for loans and visas.
