Introduction
What is NEET Counselling?
NEET counselling is the centralised process through which NEET-qualified candidates are allotted MBBS/BDS seats in medical colleges across India, based on their NEET rank, category, preferences and seat availability. It is conducted in two streams — the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the 15% All India Quota and deemed/central institutions, and the respective state authorities for the 85% state quota.

How It Works
Step-by-Step NEET Counselling Process
The MCC and state counselling cycles follow the same broad sequence. Below is the typical flow for a NEET-qualified candidate.
Register on the MCC portal (mcc.nic.in) for All India Quota or on your state counselling portal, and pay the registration fee and refundable security deposit.
Round Explanation
NEET Counselling Rounds Explanation
Round 1
Round 1 is the first phase of seat allotment and is open to all eligible candidates who have registered for counselling. In this round, students can accept the allotted seat and join the college, opt for upgradation in the next round, or choose free exit.
Round 2
Round 2 is the second opportunity for candidates who were not allotted any seat in Round 1 or who opted for upgradation. Fresh registration may be allowed for new candidates.
Round 3
Round 3 is conducted after Round 2 to fill seats that remain vacant across All India Quota, Central Universities, AIIMS, and Deemed/Private institutes. Fresh choice filling is mandatory, and seat allotment is based on merit and availability.
Stray Vacancy Round
The Stray Vacancy Round fills any seats still vacant after Round 3. Seats are allotted strictly from the existing pool of registered candidates using their previously locked choices. No fresh registration or choice modifications are allowed, and reporting is mandatory once a seat is allotted.

Exit Options
What is Free Exit and Exit with Forfeiture?
Free Exit
If a candidate is allotted a seat in Round 1 and does not join, they can exit without penalty.
Exit with Forfeiture
If a candidate is freshly allotted a seat in Round 2 or Round 3 but fails to join the allotted college, their refundable security deposit will be forfeited. Note: Candidates who join an allotted seat in Round 2 or later are strictly prohibited from resigning or vacating the seat.
Important Tips
- Registration must be completed before the deadline.
- Carefully research colleges before making a choice, and select as many options as possible.
- Lock choices before the deadline (auto-locks if missed); no changes post-lock.
- Report on time or forfeit seat/deposit.
- Arrange all the documents earlier.
- Participate in all the rounds of NEET 2027 counselling.
NEET Score
What if Your NEET Score is Low?
Drop Year
If students score close to the cut-off and believe it can be improved, they can reappear. Students can analyse weak subjects, focus on NCERT, practice regular mock exams, and work on accuracy and time management.
Private or Deemed Universities in India
If students qualify NEET but their score is not sufficient for government colleges, they can apply to private medical colleges or deemed universities. However, they should plan finances strategically because tuition fees are higher in such institutions.

Students can also pursue MBBS abroad, but NEET qualification is mandatory if they want to practice in India later. The university must be recognized by the National Medical Commission.
