Fudan University is ranked about 30th in the world (QS 2026) and is a member of China's elite C9 League and a Double First-Class university. Its Shanghai Medical College is on the Ministry of Education's list of universities authorised to teach MBBS in English to international students and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so Indian students can pursue the NMC FMGE/NExT pathway, subject to meeting NMC conditions. A World Directory listing is not itself WHO approval, and students targeting the United States should verify Fudan's current WFME-recognised accreditation status before relying on the ECFMG route.

How to Apply
Admission to Fudan's English-taught MBBS is through the university's International Students Office, based on strong Class 12 (PCB) results, English proficiency and Fudan's own highly competitive selection. It is not decided on NEET, but Indian students must have qualified NEET to be eligible later for Indian licensing.
Applicants need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and strong marks, given Fudan's selectivity; Indian students must also have a qualifying NEET-UG score, mandatory for later Indian licensing.
International applicants apply online through Fudan's International Students Office with academic documents, passport and proof of English proficiency, and pay the application fee (about RMB 800).
Fudan selects on academic record and English proficiency, and may interview; the English-MBBS intake is small and competitive.
Selected students receive an admission letter and JW202 form for the Chinese student visa.
Students apply for the Chinese student (X) visa with the admission documents and complete a medical check.
The English-taught MBBS begins in the autumn (September) intake in Shanghai.
Applicants need Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and strong marks, given Fudan's selectivity, plus English proficiency (commonly IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90, to be confirmed for the MBBS). For Indian students who intend to practise in India, the National Medical Commission's norms also apply: a minimum of 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories) and a qualifying NEET-UG score.

Indian students should be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the year of admission, in line with the National Medical Commission's rules for MBBS.
International applicants apply through Fudan's International Students Office with academic and English-proficiency documents. Indian students also need a valid NEET-UG score, and should be prepared to learn some Chinese (HSK) for the clinical years and Chinese licensing.
English MBBS + Some Chinese
The MBBS is taught in English, but students study Chinese (HSK) alongside it, needed to communicate with patients during clinical rotations and for the Chinese medical licensing exam.
NEET for India Licensing
NEET is not part of Fudan admission, but Indian students must have qualified NEET-UG before starting to be eligible for the FMGE/NExT and Indian registration later.
There is no UCAT-style entrance test; Fudan selects on academic record, English proficiency and its own assessment, and the English-MBBS intake is small and competitive.

Legacy
Fudan's medical college has a distinguished heritage, from its founder Yan Fuqing to many academicians of the Chinese Academies. The figures below are genuinely and verifiably connected to the college.
Yan Fuqing (1882-1970) was the founder and first dean of the medical college, a Yale-trained physician regarded as a father of modern Chinese public health and medical education. He founded Zhongshan Hospital and helped shape organised medicine in China, giving the college its enduring standards and identity.
Chen Haozhu (1924-2020) was a pioneering cardiologist at Zhongshan Hospital and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was a founder of interventional cardiology in China, advancing the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease for the whole country.
Gu Yudong (born 1937) is a world-renowned hand and microsurgery specialist at Huashan Hospital and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, known for advances in nerve and limb reconstruction that have influenced microsurgery internationally.
Tang Zhaoyou (born 1930) is a distinguished liver-cancer surgeon and researcher at Zhongshan Hospital and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recognised for his work on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of liver cancer.
Wen Yumei (born 1934) is an eminent molecular virologist and immunologist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, celebrated for her research on hepatitis B and the development of therapeutic approaches to the virus.
Chen Zhongwei (1929-2004) was a pioneering microsurgeon associated with the college, internationally known as a father of limb replantation for his landmark reattachment surgery, which helped establish modern reconstructive microsurgery.
Teaching is delivered by Fudan's medical faculty and its renowned Shanghai teaching hospitals, with many academicians of the Chinese Academies of Sciences and Engineering. Shanghai Medical College is led by its President, Professor Jin Li, who is also President of Fudan University and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Fudan University provides on-campus international-student dormitories, and there is a large private-rental market in Shanghai, though rents are high by Chinese standards. International-student housing should be confirmed with the university's International Students Office.

Practising in India
An Indian graduate of Fudan who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. Fudan's English-taught MBBS satisfies the NMC's English-medium condition, which is a genuine advantage, but the NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities, so each student must meet the conditions.
Step 1
Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. NEET is mandatory both to study MBBS abroad and to sit the FMGE/NExT.
Step 2
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a course and internship of at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship in the same institution, an English medium of instruction (which Fudan's MBBS satisfies), and a degree that entitles the holder to be registered as a physician in the country of study. Note that to be licensed in China itself, graduates must pass the Chinese medical licensing exam, which needs Chinese (HSK).
Step 3
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.

Fudan is a premium, high-cost option in an expensive city, though scholarships exist. Realistic financial planning matters because the all-in cost over six years is high.
The English-taught MBBS tuition is about RMB 75,000 per year (roughly ₹8.6 lakh), around ₹52 lakh over six years, and Shanghai living costs add roughly ₹8.5 lakh a year at the lower end, so the realistic all-in cost is around ₹1 crore or more across the six years.
