UK medical degrees run for five years (some six with an intercalated BSc), taught in English with an integrated curriculum that combines basic science and clinical medicine, followed by the two-year Foundation Programme after graduation.

Important: MBBS / MBChB in the UK is a direct-entry programme after Class 12 / A-levels. The five-year course (six with an intercalated BSc) is followed by the two-year Foundation Programme, and from 2024–25 the GMC Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) applies to all doctors seeking UK registration.

Academic Qualification
Applicants need excellent Class 12 / A-level results in science subjects, a strong UCAT score and (for many universities) a successful interview. Indian Class 12 students may be asked to complete a recognised foundation year or offer A-levels / IB. NEET UG is not part of admission here, and because this degree does not meet the NMC's rules, NEET UG does not open a route to practise in India from it.

Age Requirement
Candidates must meet the following criterion at the time of admission:
- Minimum age 17–18Most UK medical schools require applicants to be at least 17–18 by the start of the course; there is no upper age limit.
Entrance & Application Requirements
Applicants apply through UCAS, sit the UCAT and demonstrate English proficiency; most schools also interview (often multiple mini-interviews).
UCAT
University Clinical Aptitude Test, the admissions test required by almost all UK medical schools (BMAT has been discontinued).
IELTS / OET (English)
English-proficiency test for applicants whose prior education was not in English; most schools ask for IELTS 7.0–7.5.
For Students Thinking of Practising in India: A UK MBBS meets two of the NMC's main conditions: it runs five to six years, well above the 54 months required, and it is taught in English. It does not meet the third. The NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 ask for a 12-month internship at the same university, while in the UK the first year after graduation, Foundation Year 1, is a paid NHS job given out nationally, not part of the university course. So a UK MBBS does not meet the NMC's rules for a student admitted after 18 November 2021. The route it opens is practice in the UK: provisional GMC registration, Foundation Year 1, then full registration. Under the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, graduates of UK medical schools, whatever their nationality, get first priority for Foundation places. The NBEMS FMGE bulletin still lists an exemption for doctors with both a UK medical degree and a UK postgraduate qualification who are registered in the UK, but students admitted after 18 November 2021 are judged under the FMGL rules.

International students study in the UK on a Student visa (formerly Tier 4), sponsored by the university. Once you accept an offer, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that you use to apply.
Accept your offer from a GMC-approved medical school; the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) with your course and sponsor details.
Show your tuition for the first year plus maintenance funds (about £1,529/month for London or £1,171/month elsewhere, for up to 9 months), held for 28 consecutive days.
Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (about £776/year, upfront) and the Student visa application fee.
Meet the English-language requirement through IELTS / OET or an equivalent recognised qualification.
Complete the online Student visa application, upload documents (including a TB test where required) and attend a biometrics appointment.
Once the visa is granted, travel to the UK, collect your biometric residence permit / eVisa and enrol at your university.

How to Practise
Your Path After MBBS / MBChB in the UK
After MBBS / MBChB
Finish the five-year MBBS / MBChB (six with an intercalated BSc) at a GMC-approved UK medical school.
Pass the GMC Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) and obtain provisional registration with the General Medical Council.
Undertake the two-year UK Foundation Programme (FY1 and FY2) as a junior doctor in the NHS; full GMC registration follows FY1.
Apply for specialty training (for example internal medicine, surgery) or general-practice training, which lasts roughly 3 to 8 years depending on the field.
A UK MBBS does not meet the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021, because Foundation Year 1 is an NHS job after graduation, not a 12-month internship at the same university. For a student admitted after 18 November 2021, it does not lead to FMGE eligibility or practice in India.
Compete for specialty training in the UK and sit Royal College examinations such as MRCP / MRCS.
Work as a specialist registrar, consultant or GP in the UK, with full GMC registration.
