How to become a doctor in India in 2026: NEET UG eligibility and pattern, 1,40,214 MBBS seats, counselling, fees, the 5.5-year course and NMC registration.

How to become a doctor in India takes five steps. Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Qualify NEET UG. Win an MBBS seat through counselling. Finish 4.5 years of study and a 12-month internship. Then register with a State Medical Council. In 2026, 11.21 lakh students qualified NEET UG for 1,40,214 MBBS seats.
Updated on 1 October 2026.
Key Takeaways
NEET UG is the only way in. No student can study MBBS in India, or abroad with plans to practise in India, without the minimum NEET UG score, under the NMC Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023.
Seats are limited. The NMC seat matrix of 10 September 2026 lists 1,40,214 MBBS seats in 836 colleges. Government colleges hold 63,971 of them.
Competition is steep. In 2026, 19,99,895 students sat NEET UG and 11,21,185 qualified, so about eight qualified students for every seat (NTA key data points of NEET UG).
The course is 5.5 years in total. MBBS is 4.5 years (54 months) of study plus a 12-month compulsory rotating internship, as an NMC public notice of 7 April 2026 sets out.
Registration makes you a doctor in law. Section 34 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 bars anyone not on a State or National Register from practising, with up to one year in prison or a Rs. 5 lakh fine.

Who Is Eligible for NEET UG 2026 to Become a Doctor in India?
The NTA NEET UG 2026 information bulletin sets the rules. It follows the NMC Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023.
Age: you must be at least 17 years old on or before 31 December of the year you sit NEET UG. For 2026, that meant being born on or before 31 December 2009.
No upper age limit: the NMC has set no upper age limit for NEET UG, so older candidates and repeat candidates can apply.
Subjects: you must pass Class 12 (or an equal exam) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English. Students who added these subjects after Class 12 from a recognised board are also allowed.
Class 12 result awaited: you may sit NEET UG while your Class 12 result is pending. You cannot take a seat unless you have passed by the first round of counselling.
Studying abroad: Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who want to study medicine at a foreign university must also qualify NEET UG.
Who cannot become a doctor through MBBS: a student without Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English at Class 12 level, and a student who does not reach the NEET UG qualifying percentile. Our web story on NEET UG eligibility rules and the web story on NEET age limit and attempts sum these up.
Category | Minimum NEET UG percentile |
|---|---|
General and General-EWS | 50th percentile |
SC, ST and OBC | 40th percentile |
General and General-EWS with a benchmark disability | 45th percentile |
SC, ST and OBC with a benchmark disability | 40th percentile |
Qualifying is not the same as getting a seat. Your All India Rank decides that. Past closing marks are on our NEET cut-offs page.

How Does the NEET UG 2026 Exam Work?
NEET UG is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical courses. The National Testing Agency (NTA) runs it once a year. It decides admission to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses across India. The 2026 pattern below is from the NEET UG 2026 information bulletin.
NEET UG 2026 feature | Detail |
|---|---|
Conducting body | National Testing Agency (NTA) |
Mode | Pen and paper, one day, one shift |

How Many Students Compete for MBBS Seats in India in 2026?
Two numbers set the odds: how many students qualify NEET UG, and how many MBBS seats exist. The NTA figures are from its key data points of NEET UG over years.
NEET UG | Registered | Appeared | Qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
2025 | 22,76,069 | 22,09,318 | 12,36,531 |
2026 | 22,79,743 | 19,99,895 | 11,21,185 |
The NMC seat matrix for 2026 to 2027, dated 10 September 2026, counts seats as on 1 September 2026. It leaves out Institutes of National Importance such as AIIMS and JIPMER.
College type | Colleges | MBBS seats 2026 to 2027 |
|---|---|---|
Government | 445 | 63,971 |
Private | 391 | 76,243 |
All colleges | 836 | 1,40,214 |
So there are about eight qualified students for every MBBS seat, and about 17 for every government seat. This year added 13,186 new seats, but 10,400 of them are private. Our post on MBBS seats in India 2026 breaks this down by state, and the web story on the NMC seat matrix 2026 to 2027 shows it at a glance.
How Are MBBS Seats Allotted Through NEET UG Counselling?
Counselling is the process that turns your NEET UG rank into a college seat. You register, fill your choice of colleges in order, and get a seat based on rank, category and choices. Under the NMC Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, no college may admit an MBBS student outside counselling.
Quota | Who runs counselling | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
All India Quota | Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), under the Directorate General of Health Services | 15% of seats in government medical colleges, plus central universities such as AMU, BHU and Delhi University, ESIC colleges and AFMC Pune |
State quota | Each state counselling authority | State quota seats in the colleges of that state |
The MCC details are on the MCC UG medical counselling page. The 15% All India Quota share is set out in the Tamil Nadu MBBS prospectus 2026 to 2027. By late September 2026, the MCC had published the provisional result of Round 3 of UG counselling 2026.
Our NEET counselling page explains each round. Our guide to MCC Round 3 registration covers the current round. To see which colleges your rank could reach, use the futureMBBS College Predictor.

Which Are the Top Medical Colleges in India to Become a Doctor?
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is the Government of India's ranking of colleges. The NIRF India Rankings 2025: Medical is the latest edition. Its top ten are below.
NIRF 2025 rank | Institution | City |
|---|---|---|
1 | New Delhi | |
2 | Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research | Chandigarh |
3 | Vellore | |
4 | Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research | Puducherry |

8 | Lucknow | |
9 | Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | Coimbatore |

The NIRF ranks institutions on teaching, research, graduate outcomes, outreach and perception. For an MBBS seat, it is one guide among several. Fees, location and your NEET UG rank matter just as much.
What Does MBBS Cost in India in 2026?
The cost of becoming a doctor in India depends on the seat you win. A government seat is the cheapest by far. The figures below come from each official fee document.
Seat type | Example | Official fee | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
Central government | AIIMS New Delhi | Rs. 1,628 for the whole course | |
State government | Tamil Nadu government colleges | Rs. 18,073 a year | |
Private, government quota | Tamil Nadu self-financing colleges | From Rs. 4.35 lakh a year | |
Deemed university | Kasturba Medical College, Manipal | Rs. 71,00,500 for the course |
One rule changed in 2026. The NMC public notice of 7 April 2026 says colleges may charge MBBS fees only for the 4.5 years of study, not for the internship year. Our full guide to the cost of MBBS in India covers every state and seat type.
How Long Is the MBBS Course to Become a Doctor in India?
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) takes 5.5 years. That is 4.5 years (54 months) of study and then 12 months of internship. The NMC public notice of 7 April 2026 sets out this structure.
Study years: you learn the basic sciences first, such as anatomy and physiology. Later years move to subjects like pathology and pharmacology, then clinical work in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
Time limit: the NMC Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 allow no more than four attempts at the first-year exam. No student may stay on the course more than nine years after admission.
Internship: the NMC Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021 require at least 12 months of rotating internship. You are not treated as a graduate until it is complete.

How Do You Register as a Doctor in India After MBBS?
An MBBS degree alone does not let you practise. Section 34 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 sets the rule. Only a person on a State Register or the National Register may practise medicine, hold a doctor's post, or sign medical certificates. Breaking this rule can mean up to one year in prison, a fine of up to Rs. 5 lakh, or both.
Pass the final MBBS exam at a college recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Get provisional registration from your State Medical Council so you can work as an intern, under the NMC Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine Regulations, 2023.
Complete the 12-month internship under the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021.
Apply for permanent registration to the State Medical Council with your internship completion certificate.
Renew your licence every five years, as the 2023 registration regulations require.
The National Exit Test (NExT) is planned as a common final-year exam that would also act as the licensing exam. An NMC public notice of 13 July 2023 deferred it until further notice, so the final MBBS exam still leads to registration. Our guide on how to become a registered medical practitioner covers the documents and fees.
What Can You Do After MBBS in India?
Once registered, an MBBS doctor can work as a general doctor in hospitals, clinics and primary health centres. Most doctors then specialise. To do that, you sit NEET PG, the entrance exam for MD, MS and PG diploma courses run by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
Postgraduate course | Duration | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|
MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery) | 3 years | Broad specialties such as general medicine, paediatrics or general surgery |
PG diploma | 2 years | NMC is no longer approving new diploma seats, and colleges may convert them to degree seats |
DM or MCh (super-specialty) | 3 years after MD or MS | Specialties such as cardiology or neurosurgery |
These durations are from the NMC Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. Our guides on medical specialisations, NEET PG counselling and jobs after MBBS cover the options.
What If You Do Not Get an MBBS Seat in India?
With about eight qualified students for every seat, many students who qualify NEET UG do not get a seat. There are three realistic options.
Take NEET UG again. There is no upper age limit, so a second attempt is open to you.
Take a private or deemed seat. This works only if the family can pay fees that run into tens of lakhs.
Study MBBS abroad. The degree must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: a course of at least 54 months, taught in English, with a 12-month internship at the same university.
Foreign graduates must then pass the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) and do a further 12-month supervised internship in India. In the December 2025 FMGE, 10,264 of 42,868 candidates passed, a pass rate of 23.94 per cent, so roughly one in four (NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025). Our guides to the FMGE exam and eligibility for MBBS abroad explain the rules. Our 23 partner universities in 9 European countries follow these NMC rules, and the web story on options after NEET with no MBBS seat walks through each choice.

Conclusion: How to Become a Doctor in India
Becoming a doctor in India is a fixed sequence: Class 12 science, NEET UG, counselling, 5.5 years of MBBS and internship, then registration. The hardest step is the seat. In 2026, 11.21 lakh students qualified for 1,40,214 seats, and only 63,971 of those are in government colleges. Plan your NEET UG preparation around that number, and know your options before results day.
Frequently Asked Questions About How to Become a Doctor in India

What is the age limit to become a doctor in India?
