MBBS seats in India cross 1.4 lakh for 2026-27

The headline number

NMC's revised seat matrix, issued on 9 September 2026, puts India at 1,40,214 MBBS seats across 836 medical colleges. That is 1,27,028 seats renewed plus 13,186 newly approved.

Private colleges now hold the larger share

Government colleges account for 63,971 seats across 391 institutions. Private colleges account for 76,243 seats across 445. More than half of India's MBBS capacity now sits outside the government system.

What it means against this year's NEET result

Around 11.21 lakh candidates qualified NEET UG 2026. Even after the increase, roughly one qualified candidate in eight can be seated, and government seats cover about one in seventeen.

NMC attached a warning to the matrix

Any admission beyond a college's approved intake is treated as non-compliance with the National Medical Commission Act 2019, and carries regulatory and penal action against the college.

Check the matrix before you lock a choice

Seat counts move through the year as approvals and appeals clear, and a college's intake can change between counselling rounds. The matrix on the NMC site is the version that governs.
