History

History Information

Building a World-Class Medical Institution

AIIMS Delhi was created out of a larger dream to build a world-class medical institution for independent India. The idea first came up in 1946, when a government health survey recommended setting up a centre that could match global standards in medical education and research.

From Vision to Reality

That vision became reality with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act of 1956, which established AIIMS as an autonomous institution of national importance with the freedom to set its own academic standards. Built with support from New Zealand under the Colombo Plan, the institute admitted its first MBBS batch the same year. Its mandate was ambitious from the start: demonstrate the highest standards of medical education, nurture teachers for other colleges, and bring research self-sufficiency to Indian medicine.

Leaders Who Shaped AIIMS Delhi

In its early years, AIIMS Delhi grew under the direction of Dr B. B. Dikshit, its first Director, who set high standards for teaching and patient care. After him, leaders like Dr K. L. Wig and Dr V. Ramalingaswami carried the institute forward, expanding its research work and strengthening its reputation in India and abroad. Each generation of leadership added new departments, specialty centres, and research programmes, turning the institute into the country's most trusted name in medicine.

AIIMS Delhi Today

Today the institute anchors India's medical education and research landscape. Its hospitals treat millions of patients every year, its faculty help shape national health policy, and its alumni lead hospitals, universities, and research institutes around the world. For each new MBBS batch, that history translates into something practical: training within an institution whose standards have defined Indian medicine for nearly seven decades.
