NEET UG eligibility rules: the five that decide it

There is a minimum age, and only a minimum

You must turn 17 on or before 31 December of the year you seek admission. That is the only age rule, and it comes from an NMC amendment dated 16 June 2023.

No upper age limit applies any more

The NEET UG 2026 bulletin says plainly that there is no upper age limit. The old caps of 25 and 30 years ended in 2022, so age alone cannot stop you sitting.

Nothing in the rules caps your attempts

The NEET UG 2026 information bulletin carries no clause limiting how many times a candidate may sit the exam, and no NMC regulation sets one either.

You qualify by beating other candidates, not a mark

You qualify by beating a share of the other candidates, not by hitting a fixed mark. The bar is the top half for unreserved candidates and the top 60% for reserved ones.

Qualifying is not the same as a seat

In 2026 around 11.21 lakh candidates qualified against 1,40,664 MBBS seats, of which 64,121 are in government colleges. Roughly one qualified candidate in eight is seated.

Your result holds for three years abroad

The National Medical Commission accepts your NEET result as the certificate you need to study medicine abroad. It stays valid for three years from the result.
