What NEET UG actually opens up beyond MBBS

The arithmetic, stated plainly

11,21,185 candidates qualified NEET UG 2026. NMC counts 1,40,214 MBBS seats for 2026-27 across 836 colleges, of which 63,971 are government. Most qualified candidates will be looking at something other than an MBBS seat, and the same score opens several of those doors.

BDS runs on the same score and the same counselling

MCC counsels the 15% All India Quota for BDS alongside MBBS, and NTA’s bulletin covers eligibility for both courses together. The regulator changed in 2026: the National Dental Commission was constituted on 19 March 2026, replacing the Dental Council of India.

AYUSH is the largest single alternative

The Ministry of AYUSH reported 64,812 undergraduate AYUSH seats for 2023-24, roughly double the 32,256 of 2014-15. BAMS, BHMS, BUMS and BSMS admissions run on the NEET UG score, counselled for the all India quota by AACCC under the Ministry of AYUSH.

Veterinary has its own all India quota

The Veterinary Council of India filled 779 BVSc and AH seats under its 15% all India quota for 2025-26, using the NEET UG merit list. The course runs five and a half years including a one year compulsory internship, and the remaining 85% is filled by state authorities.

Nursing is large, but mostly not a NEET route

India had 1,27,290 BSc Nursing seats as of June 2025, up 53% since 2014. MCC conducts BSc Nursing counselling for central institutes only, on the NEET UG score. For state government and private nursing colleges, which hold most of those seats, entry runs through state and university tests instead.

Studying abroad has conditions attached

Under NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, the course must run at least 54 months, the 12 month internship must be at the same foreign institution, the medium must be English, no part may be done in India, and the graduate must clear the screening test. NMC issued an advisory on Uzbekistan admissions on 1 April 2026.
