Introduction
Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU is one of the most competitive government medical colleges in North India. It gives students the advantage of studying medicine inside Banaras Hindu University, a large central university campus, while training in a hospital system that handles a very high patient load. That combination matters because MBBS here is not limited to classrooms and labs.
Students learn in a large academic setup and also get hands-on exposure through one of the biggest hospital networks attached to a university medical institute in the country. IMS-BHU has four major academic units under it: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Ayurveda, the Faculty of Dental Sciences, and the College of Nursing. The Faculty of Medicine alone has about 35 departments. The wider IMS hospital system has around 2,614 beds in total, including Sir Sunderlal Hospital, the Trauma Centre, the Centenary Super Specialty Block, and several specialised wings. That is a major reason the institute remains so attractive to serious NEET aspirants.

How to Apply
MBBS admission at IMS-BHU is entrance-based. Students must qualify NEET-UG, then register through the MCC counselling process for the relevant seat pool. Admission is completed only after counselling allotment, document verification, and physical reporting at the college.
The student must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English.

The institute operates a hospital system with 2,614 beds across multiple hospital blocks and specialised centres.
History
The story of IMS-BHU began in June 1960, when the old Ayurvedic College at Banaras Hindu University was reorganised into the College of Medical Sciences. That marked the start of the MBBS programme, which began with an intake of 40 students.
In its initial phase, the college had 10 departments and was designed to bring together both modern medicine and the university's existing strength in Indian systems of medicine. This early foundation gave the college a distinct identity within BHU and helped it grow into a serious centre for medical education in North India.
A key figure in this journey was Prof. K. N. Udupa, the founding principal, who played an important role in shaping the college during its formative years. Under his leadership, the institution developed its academic structure and expanded its medical training base. As the college grew in strength and scale, it was upgraded into the Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971.
Over the years, IMS-BHU has developed into one of India's leading government medical institutions, known for its strong academics, large teaching hospital system, and long-standing reputation in medical education.

IMS-BHU is part of the wider BHU residential system, and the Institute of Medical Sciences has residential provision for about 2,041 students, giving it a much larger hostel base than many standalone medical colleges.
The IMS hostel network includes multiple hostels of varying sizes, such as Dhanwantari Hostel with 211 rooms, Punarvasu Atreya Hostel with 76 rooms, Ruiya Annexe Hostel with 107 rooms, Ruiya (Medical) Hostel with 82 rooms, and Sushruta Hostel (Trauma Centre) with 406 rooms.
Other IMS-linked hostels include Florence Nightingale Hostel with 35 rooms, Kasturba Girls Hostel with 109 rooms, Lady Doctors Hostel with 62 rooms, Mother Teresa Hostel (Part I & II) with 40 rooms, Nagarjuna Girls Hostel with 92 rooms, New PG Doctors Hostel with 94 rooms, and Sukanya Girls Hostel with 35 rooms.
Students staying in the hostels get access to common rooms, mess or canteen facilities, indoor games, internet support, reading material, and university-level sports infrastructure, along with facilities such as the swimming pool, Shivaji Hall gymnasium, sports complex at Amphitheatre ground, and the shopping centre with banking facility.

Scholarship & Financial
