History

History Information

Founded by Dr. T. M. A. Pai

Dr. Tonse Madhava Anantha Pai is the visionary who started the institution after witnessing the area's medical-education and healthcare conditions. He first founded it as a registered educational society in 1951, and the college came into reality in 1953 after two years of convincing the community. It began with the pre-clinical section, with clinical training at the Wenlock District Hospital in Mangalore.

A Pioneering Public-Private Model

The college pioneered the first public-private partnership model through its clinical-training collaboration, starting with two blocks initially. In 1960, the Medical Relief Society of South Kanara supported establishing a large hospital in Manipal, and in 1961 the hospital opened with an approximately 150-bed facility.

Growth of Kasturba Hospital

Clinical training began in 1969, and over time Kasturba Hospital grew to approximately 2,032 beds.

Deemed University Status

Until 1993, the college was under Mangalore University. The Government of India then granted Deemed University status to the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and today its name and degree are recognized worldwide.
