University of Debrecen admission for Indian students: the written and oral entrance exam, the 15 May 2027 deadline, documents, fees in rupees and visa steps.

Admission to the University of Debrecen's Medicine (MD) programme is an entrance exam: a written test in biology plus chemistry or physics, then an oral exam in the same subjects, all in English. You apply online with a 150 US dollar application fee and a 350 US dollar entrance procedure fee, and the deadline for the September 2027 intake is 15 May 2027.
That is the short answer. The University of Debrecen is a public university in eastern Hungary, and its six year English programme ends in the Doctor of Medicine (dr. med.) degree, the European medical degree Indian families call MBBS. Every fact below comes from the university's own pages, read on 4 November 2026.
Key Takeaways
- The programme: Medicine (MD) in English at the University of Debrecen, 12 semesters and 360 ECTS credits, one intake a year in September.
- The exam: a written test in biology plus chemistry or physics (45 minutes each) and an oral exam in the same subjects, in English. Free sample tests and topic lists are on the university's site.
- The deadline: 15 May 2027 for the September 2027 intake, through the university's online platform.
- The costs: 150 US dollars to apply, 350 US dollars for the entrance procedure, and tuition of 19,500 US dollars a year on the programme page, about 18.5 lakh rupees, with health insurance included.
- The second door: students who need more science first can take the one year Basic Medicine Course, and finishing it successfully means direct admission to Medicine.
What is the University of Debrecen admission process?
University of Debrecen admission has three stages: an online application with your school certificate, passport, CV, a medical certificate and the 150 US dollar fee; an entrance exam that is part written and part oral; and, once you have the letter of acceptance, the first year's tuition, which unlocks your visa documents.
The application and admission page keeps one rule front and centre: the university "cannot consider incomplete applications". So upload everything at once, in English or with an English translation.
The good news for a family in India is that the first two stages start from home. The Medicine programme page says the admission process for international applicants runs through online written tests and oral interviews. Your first flight can be the one to Debrecen in September.
| Stage | What you do | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Fill in the form on the university's Stuart portal, upload documents, pay 150 US dollars | Online, from India |
| 2. Entrance exam | Written test and oral exam in biology plus chemistry or physics, 350 US dollar fee | Date and venue from the university's exam calendar |
| 3. Result | Admitted to year one, admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, or not admitted | Letter from the university |
| 4. Tuition and visa | Pay the yearly tuition, receive the visa supporting letter, apply at the Hungarian mission | India, then Debrecen in September |
When is the University of Debrecen application deadline for 2027?
The University of Debrecen application deadline for the September 2027 intake is 15 May 2027. Medicine has a single intake each year, starting in September, so there is no February start for the MD itself. Scholarship applicants follow different deadlines and systems.
Our advice is simple: don't treat 15 May as the target. A visa needs time, and the university only issues visa supporting documents after the full yearly tuition reaches its account. The visa and residence permit page says the earliest visa appointment is 90 days before you enter Hungary. Apply early in 2027, sit an early exam date, and you have room for every later step.
Exam dates and venues for medical programmes sit in a calendar on the university's entrance examination page, with venue, starting time and fees confirmed through the university's representatives. On 4 November 2026 that calendar did not yet list 2027 sessions, so check it in January. Our MBBS deadlines page tracks the other partner universities' dates too.

What is on the University of Debrecen entrance exam?
The University of Debrecen entrance exam for Medicine has two parts. First a written test in biology, compulsory for everyone, plus chemistry or physics, your choice; each written test takes 45 minutes and mixes multiple choice questions, definitions and calculations. Then an oral exam in biology and in physics or chemistry, held in English.
There are three possible outcomes, and only one of them is a straight no:
- Admitted to the first year of Medicine.
- Admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, the university's one year premedical programme, if the committee thinks you need more science first.
- Not admitted, although the committee can, in some cases, offer a place on a different programme.
The committee looks at your overall performance. The page says the scores of the separate parts are for internal use only and are not shared with applicants, so there is no published cut-off to chase. Prepare to do well across both subjects and to talk through your answers calmly.
For a NEET student this shape is familiar. The biology and the chemistry or physics are the Class 11 and 12 science you already study, and the oral part simply checks that you understand it rather than memorised it. If you want to see how this compares with tests at other European universities, read our guide to the MBBS entrance exam in Europe.
Free sample tests and the online Tutoring Seminar
The University of Debrecen gives you two ways to prepare that come straight from the people who set the exam.
The first is free. The exam topics and sample tests page has a topic list and a sample test for biology, chemistry and physics for the medical programmes. Download all three, even the subject you won't choose, and work through the topic list line by line against your NCERT books. NEETsheet's NEET 2027 biology preparation strategy, chemistry preparation strategy and physics preparation strategy help you keep the same base strong for NEET, which you'll need too.
The second is paid and optional. The university's Tutoring Seminar 2027 is an online course for Medical School applicants, run from 11 January to 12 February 2027:
- 125 hours of live classes on Zoom, taught by the university's own Medical School professors, Monday to Friday in the European afternoon or evening.
- Mock tests in every subject, Q&A after each class and e-book study material.
- 1,850 US dollars for the full course with all three subjects (about 1.75 lakh rupees), or single subjects separately.
- Registration and payment by 5 January 2027.
The page is honest about its limits: finishing the seminar doesn't guarantee admission and it doesn't replace your application. Treat it as structured revision with the examiners' own teachers, not as a shortcut.
Which documents does the University of Debrecen ask for?
The University of Debrecen asks every applicant to upload seven things online: the application form, your school leaving certificate in English or translated, proof of citizenship such as your passport, a CV, a medical certificate on the university's template, the bank receipt for the 150 US dollar application fee and, if you are still in Class 12, your recent transcripts.
For final year students the rule is specific: transcripts for the last two or three academic years, plus your predicted grades or a letter on your expected graduation. That means you can apply before your board results are out, which helps an Indian student whose Class 12 marks arrive in May.
Two more points from the application page are worth knowing:
- Study gap: for undergraduate and one-tier medical programmes the university sets a maximum gap of six years.
- Scholarship route: if you want to apply through the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, you apply through the Tempus Public Foundation's own system, not the university form. Our guide to the Stipendium Hungaricum for MBBS explains that path.
Check early whether your Indian documents also need an apostille for the visa stage. Our guide to the apostille for MBBS in Europe walks through it.

Do Indian students need IELTS for the University of Debrecen?
Not always. The University of Debrecen asks for English at B2 level, which it equates with IELTS 5.5 or a paper based TOEFL of 513. But applicants who completed secondary education in English can be exempted with a medium of instruction certificate instead, and English is also assessed at the compulsory entrance exam.
For most Indian students from English medium schools, that means asking your school for a medium of instruction letter early, on letterhead, signed and stamped. If you studied in Hindi or another language, plan for IELTS. Our post on MBBS in Europe without IELTS compares how the partner universities handle this.
One more language point: teaching is fully in English, but the programme page says you learn some basic Hungarian so you can talk with patients from the third year on. The subject is built into your timetable from year one. Our guide to the local language for MBBS in Europe shows how students handle it.
How do you apply to the University of Debrecen, step by step?
You apply to the University of Debrecen in eight steps, from checking your NEET position to arriving for registration in September 2027. Steps two to five can all be done from India before the 15 May 2027 deadline.
- Check your NEET position. If you want to practise in India later, you need to qualify NEET UG. Our post on whether NEET is required for MBBS abroad explains why, and NEETsheet's guide to the NEET 2027 eligibility criteria covers age and subject rules.
- Download the sample tests and topic lists for biology, chemistry and physics, and decide whether you want the online Tutoring Seminar (sign up by 5 January 2027).
- Collect your documents: passport, school certificate or recent transcripts with predicted grades, CV, medical certificate on the university's template and, if needed, an English certificate or medium of instruction letter.
- Pay the 150 US dollar application fee by bank transfer, writing your name and date of birth in the remarks, and keep the receipt.
- Apply online on the university's Stuart platform and upload everything in one go.
- Book and sit the entrance exam, paying the 350 US dollar entrance procedure fee: the written test first, then the oral exam.
- Pay the first year's tuition once you hold the letter of acceptance. Only then does the university send the visa supporting documents and the health insurance contract.
- Apply for the D type visa at the Hungarian mission in India, no earlier than 90 days before you travel, and arrive in Debrecen for registration and the medical check up.
If you are short on time, don't skip step 1. A University of Debrecen degree is only useful in India if your NEET qualification is in place before you join.
What does the University of Debrecen cost in rupees?
The University of Debrecen Medicine programme page lists tuition of 19,500 US dollars a year, about 18.5 lakh rupees, so six years come to about 1.11 crore rupees. On top come the 150 US dollar application fee and the 350 US dollar entrance procedure fee, both non-refundable, about 47,400 rupees together.
| Item | US dollars | Rupees (approx.) | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application fee | 150 | 14,200 | With the online application |
| Entrance procedure fee | 350 | 33,200 | Before the exam |
| Tutoring Seminar, all three subjects (optional) | 1,850 | 1.75 lakh | By 5 January 2027 |
| Tuition, per year (programme page) | 19,500 | 18.5 lakh | Before the visa documents |
| Tuition, six years at that rate | 117,000 | 1.11 crore | Year by year |
| Living costs, per month (university estimate) | 800 | 75,800 | In Debrecen |
Rupee figures use the European Central Bank's reference rates of 3 November 2026: 105.9155 rupees and 1.1179 US dollars per euro, about 94.75 rupees per dollar (see the ECB rupee rate and the ECB dollar rate). Your bank's rate will differ a little.
A word on the two tuition figures you may see. The university's fee table lists 16,900 US dollars a year for students admitted for 2026/27, while the Medicine programme page now shows 19,500 US dollars a year. Budget on the higher figure for a September 2027 start, and ask the admissions office to confirm your year's fee in writing.
The tuition already covers some costs you'd otherwise pay separately. The fee table says health insurance, the medical check up and the student card are included, and the health care page describes a combined health and travel insurance that is compulsory and paid through tuition. For everyday spending, the cost of living page estimates about 800 US dollars a month for shared private accommodation, food, study materials and local transport.

The Basic Medicine Course: a second door into Medicine
Not everyone walks into the first year straight away, and the University of Debrecen has built a proper route for that. The Basic Medicine Course is a one year premedical programme in biology, physics and chemistry, starting in September, for students whose school science isn't yet strong enough for the first year.
The key line on that page: students who complete the course successfully are directly admitted to their chosen programme. It costs 7,500 US dollars (about 7.1 lakh rupees), with the same 150 and 350 US dollar one-time fees, and it also needs an entrance exam. An intensive version runs from January to July.
For an Indian student with a borderline science base, that's a real advantage: a full year inside the university, taught to its own standard, with a clear path into Medicine at the end. Our post on the foundation year for MBBS in Europe explains how such years work across the partner universities and what they mean for NMC rules.
Why Indian students choose the University of Debrecen
The University of Debrecen is one of the largest universities in Hungary. Its facts and figures page lists more than 34,000 students, more than 7,800 of them international students from over 140 countries, and English language programmes since 1987. Its two teaching hospitals have more than 2,900 beds and receive about 3 million patients a year.
What does that mean for you in practice?
- A long history. The history page traces teaching at the university back to 1914 and its official inauguration to 23 October 1918, with roots in the Reformed College founded in 1538.
- Clinical work in the final year. The programme page says sixth year students take part in patient care in internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, neurology, psychiatry and paediatrics.
- Quality checks you can read. The accreditation page notes that Hungary's accreditation committee holds recognition status from the World Federation for Medical Education until 31 March 2032.
- Options beyond India. The same page says Debrecen medical graduates are not required to take the PLAB exam to practise in the UK, and from 2026/2027 the university offers Kaplan USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 prep courses as electives worth 4 credits.
- A big international community. With students from more than 140 countries, you won't be the only newcomer in your first week.
Our University of Debrecen profile has more on the campus, and the Hungary country page compares it with Semmelweis, Pécs and Szeged. If you're also looking at those, read our guides to the Semmelweis University application and University of Pécs admission.
Visa and residence permit for Hungary
To study in Hungary for six years, an Indian student needs a residence permit for the purpose of studies, applied for as a D type visa from India. The university's visa page says this visa can only be obtained in your country of origin or at the nearest Hungarian embassy, not inside Hungary.
The EU Immigration Portal page for students in Hungary lists the documents: proof of admission, proof of language skills, a valid passport, proof of accommodation, proof of health insurance and proof of enough money for the stay and the return trip. The fee at a Hungarian mission is 110 euros. The permit runs for one to three years and can be extended. It also lets you work up to 30 hours a week during studies.
The university sends you the original letter of acceptance, a signed visa supporting letter in Hungarian and the draft health insurance contract by express delivery, after your tuition arrives. Our guides to the residence permit for MBBS students in Europe and the student visa for MBBS in Europe walk through each step.

Does a University of Debrecen degree fit India's FMGL rules?
India's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 ask for a course of at least 54 months, a 12 month internship in the same foreign institution, English as the medium, a licence to practise in the country of study, a 12 month supervised internship in India and the national licensing test. The six year English programme meets the length and language parts.
How the sixth year's clinical work maps onto the 12 month internship condition, and how the Hungarian licence is obtained after graduation, are the questions to settle before you enrol. Ask the admissions office in writing, keep the reply, and read our guides on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition and on FMG internship and registration in India.
