Hungary MBBS Fees 2026: What All 4 Universities Charge

Hungary MBBS fees for the English-taught medicine degree are between 15,800 and 18,680 euros a year at Szeged and Semmelweis, and about 16,750 to 16,900 US dollars a year at Pécs and Debrecen. On top come a few one-time charges for applying, the entrance exam and enrolment, and the good news is that each university publishes all of them openly.

This guide puts the Hungary MBBS fees of all four universities side by side, straight from their own fee pages: Semmelweis University in Budapest, the University of Debrecen, the University of Pécs Medical School and the University of Szeged. You'll see what you pay before you arrive, what tuition already covers, and where you can legally pay less.

Key Takeaways

  • Yearly tuition sits in a narrow band. Szeged charges 7,900 euros a semester, Semmelweis 9,340 euros a semester, Pécs 16,750 US dollars a year and Debrecen 16,900 US dollars a year.
  • One-time fees are small next to tuition. Application, exam and enrolment fees total 300 euros at Szeged, 500 US dollars at Debrecen, 630 at Semmelweis and 670 at Pécs (exam taken in Pécs).
  • Some costs are already inside tuition. Debrecen includes health insurance, a medical checkup and your student card; Szeged includes general health insurance valid for Hungary.
  • Szeged rewards early and strong students. Its 2026 Open Day material lists an early bird discount, a 900 euro start scholarship and up to 40% off tuition for top students in years 2 to 5.
  • Pécs has already published its 2027/2028 fee. Students starting in 2027/2028 pay 16,750 US dollars in each academic year, split 9,000 and 7,750 by semester.

What are the Hungary MBBS fees at each university?

Each university publishes its own Hungary MBBS fees, so the four schools quote different amounts and even different currencies. All four teach the six year (12 semester) General Medicine degree in English, and the table shows their published tuition next to the year the page applies to.

University City Tuition as published Per year Fee page applies to
Semmelweis University Budapest 9,340 euros per semester 18,680 euros Current programme page (2027 deadline listed)
University of Debrecen Debrecen 16,900 US dollars per year 16,900 US dollars 2026/27
University of Pécs Medical School Pécs 9,000 + 7,750 US dollars by semester 16,750 US dollars Students starting 2027/2028
University of Szeged Szeged 7,900 euros per semester 15,800 euros Fall semester 2026/27

The per-year figures for Semmelweis and Szeged are our sums of two semesters. You can read each page yourself: the Semmelweis General Medicine programme page, the Debrecen tuition and fees page, the Pécs tuition fees and costs page and the Szeged MD General Medicine course page.

Why does a reader in India care about the currency? Because you'll pay Hungary MBBS fees in rupees, and the rupee moves differently against the euro and the dollar. A euro fee and a dollar fee that look similar today can drift apart over six years, so compare them at the rate your bank quotes on the day you pay.

For a closer look at each campus, see our pages on Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen, the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged.

How much is six years of tuition in Hungary?

Six years of tuition in Hungary comes to roughly 95,000 to 112,000 euros at the two euro-billing schools and about 100,500 to 101,400 US dollars at the two dollar-billing schools. These are our own multiplications of the published fees, so treat them as a planning figure, not a quote.

Here's how six years of Hungary MBBS fees work out, university by university:

University Six year tuition (our sum) How we got it
Semmelweis 112,080 euros 12 semesters x 9,340 euros
Szeged about 94,800 euros 12 semesters x 7,900 euros
Debrecen 101,400 US dollars 6 years x 16,900 US dollars at the 2026/27 rate
Pécs 100,500 US dollars 6 years x 16,750 US dollars, the rate stated "in each academic year" for 2027/2028 starters

Pécs is the clearest case: its page says the 2027/2028 starting fee applies "in each academic year". For the other three, confirm in writing whether your Hungary MBBS fees stay the same for all six years. Szeged's course page, for example, says tuition can change if your progress falls behind the suggested study plan.

What do you pay before your first lecture?

Before your first lecture you pay an application fee, usually an entrance exam or enrolment fee, and at two schools a deposit that counts towards your first semester. These one-time Hungary MBBS fees are a small share of the total, but they're due early, so plan them first.

University Application Entrance exam Enrolment or registration Deposit
Semmelweis 400 US dollars (admission procedure fee) Not listed separately 230 US dollars 2,000 US dollars, deducted from first semester tuition
Debrecen 150 US dollars 350 US dollars Not listed Seat reservation fee inside tuition, amount not listed
Pécs 200 US dollars 250 US dollars if taken in Pécs 220 US dollars, paid with first semester tuition Not listed
Szeged 300 euros (up to three health science programmes) Covered by the application fee, up to two attempts where offered Not listed 800 euros inside the first semester payment

A few details make the one-time fees easier to plan:

  • Semmelweis asks admitted students to pay the 2,000 US dollar deposit within 14 days of being notified. It's non-refundable, but it isn't an extra cost: it comes off your first semester tuition.
  • Debrecen refunds the entrance exam fee if you cancel your exam registration at least one week before the exam. The seat reservation fee is refundable only if your visa or residence permit is refused.
  • Szeged splits your first semester into 7,100 euros of tuition plus an 800 euro deposit, paid together, so the first payment still totals 7,900 euros.
  • Pécs shows its entrance fee for exams taken in Pécs, so ask about the fee if you sit the exam elsewhere.

Not sure how the entrance exams themselves work? Our guide to the MBBS entrance exam in Europe walks through the format and how to prepare.

What does your tuition already include?

Hungary MBBS fees often cover more than lectures. Debrecen states that its 16,900 US dollar fee includes health insurance, a medical checkup and the student card, and Szeged states that its tuition includes general health insurance valid for Hungary. That's money you don't have to find separately.

Szeged is also clear about what tuition does not cover: summer practices, textbooks, accommodation and living expenses. Use that list as your checklist for every university, then fill in the gaps with our guide to health insurance for MBBS students in Europe if your school doesn't bundle cover.

The Szeged course runs for 12 semesters and 360 ECTS credits, and Semmelweis describes its own General Medicine degree the same way: six years, 12 semesters, 360 credits, leading to the title Doctor of General Medicine (MD). In other words, the fee buys a full undivided medical degree, not a bachelor's plus a second programme.

Which discounts can lower Hungary MBBS fees?

The clearest discounts that can lower Hungary MBBS fees come from the University of Szeged, which lists them in its 2026 Online Open Day presentation. Most reward you for applying early or for doing well once you're there.

  • Early bird discount: students admitted until 30 April get 300 euros off tuition in their first semester.
  • SZTE Start Scholarship: 900 euros for early birds.
  • Albert Szent-Györgyi Scholarship: for the highest performing students in years 2 to 5, up to a 40% reduction in tuition per semester.
  • Sibling discount: 300 euros off per semester when two or more children of one family study at the faculty.
  • Alumni discount: 300 euros off per semester for children of Szeged medical alumni.

What about Hungary's government scholarship? Stipendium Hungaricum pays full tuition and a stipend, but India's current listing on the official partners page shows full degree one-tier master's studies as not available, and General Medicine is a one-tier programme. Our Stipendium Hungaricum guide explains what that means. So for an Indian MBBS applicant, the university's own discounts are where the savings are. Our overview of scholarships for MBBS abroad covers other routes.

How are the fees paid?

Hungary MBBS fees are paid straight to the university, by bank transfer, usually semester by semester. Pécs splits each year into 9,000 US dollars for the first semester and 7,750 for the second. Semmelweis and Szeged bill per semester. Debrecen asks for payment to its US dollar bank account and does not accept cheques or cash.

One rule matters for many Indian families. Szeged's course page says the payment schedule depends on consulate and visa rules, and that applicants from visa-restricted countries pay the full tuition for the 1st and 2nd semesters together, with the details in the admission letter. Budget for a full first year up front, then you're covered whatever your letter says.

Two practical links help here. Our guide to education remittance for MBBS in Europe explains how an Indian bank sends the fee abroad for you. If you're borrowing, read about education loans for MBBS abroad before you sign.

What should you budget beyond tuition?

Hungary MBBS fees are only part of the budget: you also need rent, food, transport, books and summer practice costs. Szeged's 2026 Open Day presentation estimates living expenses at about 800 to 900 euros a month for its students, which gives you a realistic starting point for a Hungarian university city.

Part-time work can help with the living side of the budget. Hungary's immigration authority says students with a residence permit for study can work up to 30 hours a week during the school term and full time for up to 90 days a year outside it, and that the permit can be issued for up to 3 years at a time (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing). Medicine keeps you busy, so treat this as a top-up, not a way to pay tuition. Our guide to part-time work for MBBS students in Europe shows how students fit it in.

Costs differ from city to city, so build your own estimate with our cost of living guide for Indian MBBS students in Europe. Your visa application will also ask you to show money for your stay, and our guide to proof of funds for MBBS in Europe shows how that works.

How do you plan your Hungary MBBS fees step by step?

Planning your Hungary MBBS fees is easiest in a fixed order: first the exam, then the shortlist, then the money. Here's the sequence we suggest.

  1. Check where you stand for NEET first. NEETsheet explains the NEET qualifying marks and the NEET 2027 eligibility criteria, and its post on the NEET 2027 exam date helps you line up your timetable with Hungary's spring entrance exams.
  2. Shortlist two or three of the four universities by city, currency and total cost, using the tables above.
  3. Open each official fee page and note the academic year it applies to. Pécs already shows 2027/2028; the others may update theirs before you apply.
  4. Set aside the one-time fees: application, entrance exam, enrolment and any deposit.
  5. Plan for a full first year of tuition in your first payment, in case your admission letter asks for it.
  6. Apply early if you're aiming for Szeged, so you can qualify for the early bird discount and the start scholarship.
  7. Add living costs, insurance where it isn't included, and your flights, then arrange the remittance or loan.

Semmelweis already lists 31 May 2027 as its General Medicine application deadline, with entrance exams held once or twice a week from early March to the end of June. You'll find every partner university's dates on our MBBS deadlines page, and the wider picture in our guide to MBBS in Hungary for Indian students and the Hungary country page.

Planning your Hungary budget with us

Hungary MBBS fees are published in full by all four medical schools, which also include useful extras in tuition and, at Szeged, reward early and strong students. That makes it one of the easier European destinations to budget for.
