Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government's full scholarship for international students, and for most Indian MBBS aspirants the honest answer is short: it does not cover medicine for you. India is an eligible sending country, but the official 2026/27 listing for India shows full degree one-tier master's studies as "not available", and general medicine in Hungary is exactly that kind of programme. So a scholarship that pays tuition, a stipend and housing is real, it is free to apply for, and under the current Indian quota it does not reach the six year medicine degree.

What is Stipendium Hungaricum?

Stipendium Hungaricum is a government scholarship that lets international students study at a Hungarian university without paying tuition. It was founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013, is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and is managed by the Tempus Public Foundation. It works through bilateral education agreements with partner countries, and the official site says it runs in over 100 countries.

The scale is real. Applicants choose from around 900 full degree programmes, and the programme's own figures say over 91% of scholarship holders would choose Hungary again. It sits inside a much bigger movement: UNESCO counts 6.9 million students studying outside their home country, a number that has tripled since 2000.

The detail that matters for you sits one layer down. Every sending country gets its own list of study levels and fields. Stipendium Hungaricum is not one scholarship with one rulebook; it is closer to a separate deal with each partner country, and India's deal has a specific shape.

Can Indian students get Stipendium Hungaricum for MBBS?

Not under the current listing. The official partners page names the University Grants Commission as India's responsible authority and states "Full degree one-tier master studies: not available" for India. The call for applications explains that one-tier programmes are offered in fields such as general medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and veterinary surgery.

Put those two sentences side by side and the answer follows. In Hungary, medicine is not a bachelor's plus a master's. It is one undivided programme, the one-tier master's, that leads straight to the medical degree. The 2026/27 call for applications puts it plainly: one-tier programmes cover both the bachelor and the master level and result in a master's degree.

So when an Indian student applies for Stipendium Hungaricum, the six year medicine course is simply not one of the doors on offer. That is not a rumour or a consultant's opinion. It is what the two official documents say when you read them together.

Why do so many Indian families believe otherwise? Because the scholarship's general pages list general medicine as a one-tier field, and other countries' quotas do include it. Indonesia's listing, for example, shows one-tier master's studies "in any field of interest". The general brochure is true. It just is not India's version.

What India's Stipendium Hungaricum quota actually covers

Here is the India entry from the official partners page for the 2026/27 cycle, study mode by study mode.

Notice the word "primarily". It tells you the listed fields are the focus, not a guarantee that every programme in them is open. The only reliable check is the eligible programme list in the call's annexes, filtered for India, in the year you apply.

How much does Stipendium Hungaricum pay each month?

For bachelor's, master's and one-tier master's students, the 2026/27 call lists a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (about EUR 110) for 12 months a year, plus either a free dorm place or HUF 40,000 a month (about EUR 100) towards rent. It also covers tuition, Hungarian health care and supplementary insurance of up to HUF 65,000 (about EUR 165) a year.

Doctoral scholarship holders get a lot more: HUF 140,000 a month (about EUR 355) in the first four semesters and HUF 180,000 (about EUR 460) in the second four. That gap matters later in this guide.

The call itself warns that these amounts are a contribution, not a full living budget, and that in bigger cities, especially Budapest, HUF 40,000 will not cover rent. Put the stipend and the rent support together and you get HUF 83,700 a month, about EUR 210. How does the Stipendium Hungaricum application timeline run?

The 2026/27 round shows the pattern clearly. The call went live on 17 November 2025, applications closed on 15 January 2026 at 2 pm CET, and the final results reached applicants between late June and mid July 2026.

1. Mid November: the call and the eligible programme list for each country are published on the Stipendium Hungaricum site.

2. Before 15 January: you register on the online system, choose up to two study programmes in order of preference, and submit to both the Tempus Public Foundation and your sending partner, which for India is the University Grants Commission.

3. By 28 February: a technical check, then the sending partner nominates its candidates. Only nominated applicants move on.

4. Mid March to end of May: Hungarian universities hold entrance exams. You can sit up to two, and a score below 56 out of 100 rules out a scholarship offer.

5. Late June to mid July: the Tempus Public Foundation announces the results.

6. July and August: visa applications, then arrival in Hungary by 30 September.

Is the 2027/28 Stipendium Hungaricum call open yet?

No. On 30 September 2026 the official Apply page still carries the 2026/2027 documents. The last call was announced on 17 November 2025, so mid November is the sensible time to check again. When the new call appears, look first at India's row on the partners page, because the fields can change between rounds.

Two rules from the official FAQ are worth knowing before that day. Applying costs nothing, including the entrance exams, and the programme explicitly advises against applying through agencies the host universities do not know. There is also only one deadline each year. Miss it, and the next chance is twelve months later.

Which rules can cost you the scholarship later?

Winning Stipendium Hungaricum is the start, not the finish. Three conditions in the official documents catch scholarship holders out.

• The Hungarian language course. In the first year you must attend "Hungarian as a foreign language" and pass an exam at the end of the second semester. Skip the course and the monthly stipend stops. Take it and fail, and the stipend drops to HUF 30,000 a month.

• The credit minimum. Under the Operational Regulations, the university can end your scholarship if you do not earn at least 18 credits on average over the last two semesters.

• Eligibility is personal. You must hold the citizenship of the sending country, applicants born after 31 August 2008 are not eligible for the 2026/27 round, and Hungarian citizens, including dual citizens, cannot apply at all.

If you have already started a self-financed degree in Hungary, you can in principle apply to continue on Stipendium Hungaricum at the same level. You need your university's recommendation and an above-average grade record. For an Indian medical student this still runs into India's listing, because full degree one-tier master's studies are not available on it.

What should a future doctor from India do instead?

Plan the medicine degree as self-financed, and treat Stipendium Hungaricum as something that may matter after you graduate. Here is the order that works.

1. Secure your NEET position first. Check the NEET 2027 eligibility criteria and the category-wise NEET qualifying marks on NEETsheet, because an Indian licence after a foreign degree depends on NEET, whichever country you study in.
