How to Apply
Admission to General Medicine at the University of Debrecen is through the university's own entrance examination, made up of a written test and an oral interview. Indian students must also qualify NEET to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate required to study MBBS abroad, but admission to Debrecen itself is decided by its entrance exam, not by NEET rank.
The online application window for the 2026/2027 academic year opens through the university's application system.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; students pay the US$150 application fee. Confirm the current cycle's final deadline with the university.
A written test in Biology (compulsory) plus Chemistry or Physics, each 45 minutes, followed by an oral interview. A US$350 entrance-procedure fee applies.
Accepted applicants receive their offer of admission after the entrance exam and interview.
Admitted students confirm their place, pay the first tuition instalment and complete visa and registration steps for Hungary.
The academic year begins for the new intake in Debrecen.
Applicants must have completed Class 12 (or equivalent secondary education) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Indian students must have qualified NEET for NMC eligibility. Strong marks in Biology and the chosen second science help in the entrance exam.

The University of Debrecen has a long scholarly heritage and, because its English-language medical programme began in 1987, its own medical graduates are now doctors practising across the world. Its most internationally known figures span medicine, science and the arts.
Hungarian-American biochemist who contributed to the discovery of factor XIII, the blood-clotting protein once known as the Laki-Lorand factor. The university's Kálmán Laki Doctoral School, focused on thrombosis and vascular biology, is named in his honour.

Practising in India
To practise medicine in India after graduating from the University of Debrecen, Indian students follow a clear pathway set by the National Medical Commission. NEET qualification is required from the start to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate.
Step 1
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination that licenses foreign medical graduates to practise in India. This is currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is transitioning to the National Exit Test (NExT).
Step 2
After qualifying, students complete a one-year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) in India, gaining supervised clinical experience across the major departments.
Step 3
The final step is registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the relevant State Medical Council, after which the graduate can practise as a doctor in India.
