Semmelweis University Application 2027: Deadline and Steps

A Semmelweis University application for General Medicine in English is an online application in the university's SEMAPHOR portal, followed by four short online tests and an interview. For the 2027 intake the deadline is 31 May 2027, and exam dates run from early spring until the end of June, so the earlier you apply, the more dates you can choose from.

The good news for Indian students: you can apply while you're still in Class 12. Semmelweis lets final-year school students apply and sit the entrance exam first, then upload the school leaving certificate by 21 August. This guide walks you through every step of the Semmelweis University application, from documents to deposit, using only the university's own pages.

Key Takeaways

  • Deadline: Semmelweis lists 31 May 2027 as the application deadline for General Medicine; the start date of the 2027 application window is "to be announced soon".
  • Selection: four online tests (Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry, General English, Biomedical English) of 20 questions and 20 minutes each, then an interview with an oral exam.
  • Class 12 students can apply: the school leaving certificate can be uploaded to SEMAPHOR as late as 21 August of the application year.
  • Costs to plan: a 400 US dollar admission procedure fee, a 2,000 US dollar deposit within 14 days of admission (deducted from tuition), a 230 US dollar enrolment fee and tuition of 9,340 euros a semester.
  • Fast answers: Semmelweis says you hear back within 2 weeks after your exam.

What is the Semmelweis University application deadline for 2027?

The Semmelweis University application deadline for General Medicine is 31 May 2027, according to the university's General Medicine programme page. The page shows the start of the application window as "to be announced soon", so keep an eye on it from the turn of the year.

Exams don't happen on one fixed day. The programme page says they're held once or twice a week from early March until the end of June, while the entrance exam page says early February. Either way, the dates are only shown to applicants who've already submitted a Semmelweis University application in SEMAPHOR. That's the real reason to apply early: the more of the window is left, the more exam dates you can pick from.

Why do Indian students apply to Semmelweis University?

Semmelweis University in Budapest teaches General Medicine in English for international students, and the course has a lot going for it. The programme page describes a six year, 12 semester, full-time General Medicine degree worth 360 credits, taught in English and leading to the title Doctor of General Medicine (MD).

A few points stand out for a family in India:

  • Recognised quality. The Hungarian Accreditation Committee holds Recognition Status from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), valid until 31 March 2032, the programme page says.
  • A real internship year. The sixth year is an internship year in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, with short blocks in emergency care and family medicine.
  • Doors beyond Hungary. The university's page on its diplomas says EU member states must accept Hungarian medical diplomas where training conditions match, and that its medical graduates can take the USMLE. Our guide to the USMLE after MBBS in Europe covers that route.
  • Small-group teaching. The university lists block-based clinical rotations, small-group clinical training and an elective final-year course that bridges into residency.

You'll find the campus, the city and the course structure on our Semmelweis University page, and the bigger picture in our guide to MBBS in Hungary for Indian students.

Who can make a Semmelweis University application?

Anyone who has finished school, or is in the final year of school, can make a Semmelweis University application for the English programme. Applicants should preferably be under 30 when they apply and must be at least 18 by the end of the spring semester of Year 1, which for this intake means the end of May 2027.

Three more conditions matter:

  • School: you need a matriculation or school leaving certificate from an accredited high school or senior secondary school. For an Indian student that's your Class 12 certificate, and you may upload it by 21 August if your result isn't out yet.
  • English: no IELTS or TOEFL certificate is required. Semmelweis expects upper intermediate English and checks it in the written tests and the interview. If you've wondered about this, our guide to MBBS in Europe without IELTS explains how it works across universities.
  • Citizenship: the English programmes are mainly for applicants without Hungarian citizenship.

Under-18s add one form: a declaration signed by a parent or guardian.

What about NEET? Semmelweis runs its own entrance exam, and the admission FAQ says standardised tests can't replace it. NEET still matters for your career back home, so read our guide on whether NEET is required for MBBS abroad before you plan.

Which documents does a Semmelweis University application need?

A Semmelweis University application needs six uploads in SEMAPHOR, as originals or certified copies, in English or with a certified English translation. Here's the list from the programme page, with what each one means for you.

Document What to upload When
Matriculation / school leaving certificate Class 12 certificate from an accredited school, with its registration number With the application, or by 21 August if not yet issued
CV Your resume, in English With the application
Personal statement Your motivation letter With the application
Passport copy The page with your personal data With the application
Portrait photo Preferably passport size With the application
Declaration by legal representative Signed by a parent or guardian Only if you're under 18 when you apply
Medical certificate On the university's own form Only when you accept an offer

Two tips save time. Get certified copies of your Class 12 documents made once, because you'll need the same papers again for your visa. And write the personal statement yourself: the interview asks about your motivation, so it should sound like you. If your documents need legalising for later steps, our guide to the apostille for MBBS in Europe shows how it's done in India.

How do you apply to Semmelweis University, step by step?

You apply to Semmelweis University in a fixed order: account first, fee second, exam third. Follow these steps and you won't miss a date.

  1. Check your NEET position early. NEETsheet explains the NEET qualifying marks and the NEET 2027 eligibility criteria, and its NEET 2027 exam date post helps you fit NEET around Semmelweis' spring exams.
  2. Create your account in SEMAPHOR, the university's online application system, once the 2027 window opens.
  3. Upload your documents: school certificate (or later), CV, personal statement, passport copy and photo.
  4. Pay the 400 US dollar admission procedure fee. Your application only counts once it's paid.
  5. Register for an exam date in SEMAPHOR. You can withdraw only before that exam's registration deadline; a missed exam counts as attended without a result.
  6. Take the four online tests from home, then the interview in person or on Zoom.
  7. Wait for the decision, which comes within 2 weeks after the exam.
  8. If you're admitted, pay the 2,000 US dollar deposit within 14 days and upload the medical certificate.
  9. Upload your Class 12 certificate by 21 August if you hadn't yet, pay the first semester, and start your visa.

What is the Semmelweis entrance exam like?

The Semmelweis entrance exam is a written online test plus an interview. The written part has four tests of 20 questions each, and each test has its own 20 minute limit, according to the entrance exam page.

Part Questions Time Notes
Medical Biology 20 20 minutes Calculator not allowed
Medical Chemistry 20 20 minutes Calculator allowed
General English 20 20 minutes Checks everyday English
Biomedical English 20 20 minutes Checks science terms in English
Interview with oral exam Not fixed Not fixed Motivation, attitude, English and the subjects above

The rules are strict, so practise them before the real day:

  • You take the tests on your own computer in Safe Exam Browser, alone in a room, with your webcam and microphone on in a Zoom call.
  • Questions come in a set order and you can't go back. Each question has one correct answer: a right answer earns 1 point and a wrong one costs a fraction of a point.
  • Unused time doesn't carry over to the next test.
  • A free sample test is available on the university's Moodle site, and the exam page links a topic list for Biology and Chemistry.

The syllabus covers ten areas, from evolution and the cell to genetics, physiology and viruses, all with English terms. There's no published pass mark: the admission committee looks at your exam, your earlier science record and the university's diversity aims together. How much does a Semmelweis University application cost?

A Semmelweis University application costs 400 US dollars up front; the other payments only come once you've been admitted. Here's every charge on the programme page, in the order you meet it.

Payment Amount When
Admission procedure fee 400 US dollars When you apply
Deposit 2,000 US dollars, deducted from first semester tuition Within 14 days of being notified of admission
Enrolment fee 230 US dollars With the first semester's tuition
Tuition 9,340 euros per semester Each semester; first semester before 21 August

The deposit isn't an extra cost, because it comes off your first semester's tuition, but it's non-refundable. So pay it only once you're sure. The admission FAQ still quotes 350 and 220 US dollars for the two smaller fees; the programme page carrying the 2027 deadline is the newer one, but confirm the amounts in SEMAPHOR when you pay. What happens after you get an offer?

After an offer, you have 14 days to pay the deposit and confirm your place, then the rest follows a summer timetable. The admission FAQ says the first semester's tuition, minus the deposit, and the enrolment fee must be paid before 21 August, and that students who need a visa may have to pay earlier, as their admission letter will say.

Then comes the paperwork for living in Hungary. Hungary's immigration authority, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, says a student who can't enter Hungary visa-free applies abroad at a Hungarian mission, with the admission certificate and proof of tuition payment. The residence permit for study is valid for at least 1 year and up to 3 years, and can be extended. Students may work up to 30 hours a week during term and full time for up to 90 days a year outside it.

Our guides to the student visa for MBBS in Europe, the residence permit and proof of funds take you through each document. When you arrive, enrolment is simple: you report to the Basic Science Center at the time emailed to you, fill in the forms, hand in your documents and register for subjects.

Does a Semmelweis degree meet India's FMGL rules?

India's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 (FMGL) are the National Medical Commission rules for Indians who study medicine abroad. They ask for a course of at least 54 months, a 12 month internship in the same foreign institution, teaching in English, and a licence to practise in the country that awards the degree.

Semmelweis teaches General Medicine in English over six years, and its sixth year is an internship year. Before you pay the deposit, ask the university in writing how that final year counts towards the FMGL internship condition for your intake, and keep the answer with your offer letter. On your return, FMGL also asks for a 12 month supervised internship in India and the licensing exam. Our guides on checking NMC and WDOMS recognition and on the FMG internship and registration explain both steps.
