The Real Six Year Cost of MBBS in Europe

The cost of MBBS in Europe over six years runs from about EUR 60,000 in tuition at Cluj in Romania to about EUR 145,500 at Charles University in Prague, based on each university's own published 2026-27 fees. Living costs add roughly EUR 400 to EUR 1,200 a month depending on the city, and one off charges add a few thousand more.

Most fee comparisons stop at the annual tuition figure. That is the number a university publishes, and it is the smallest part of what a family actually spends. This is the whole picture.

What is the tuition cost of MBBS in Europe for 2026-27?

These are annual figures for the English taught general medicine programme, in the currency each university publishes in. Where a university publishes in dollars, zloty or koruna, the figure is left in that currency rather than converted, because the exchange rate on the day you pay is what decides the rupee cost.

The six year column is straight multiplication of the published annual fee. Universities revise fees between intakes, and Bialystok states openly that its fee may rise by up to 30% over the six year course, so treat the multiplication as the shape of the commitment rather than a quotation.

Two Hungarian universities need a note. The University of Debrecen publishes USD 16,900 a year but is no longer accepting applications for the September 2026 Medicine intake, with the next intake in September 2027. The University of Pecs publishes USD 16,750 a year for 2027-28 and has not published a 2026-27 figure. Semmelweis University in Budapest publishes USD 10,450 per semester for 2026 entry on its registrar pages.

Which one off charges break most budgets?

Universities list these separately from tuition, and they land in the first year when a family is already paying flights, visa costs and a deposit.

• Riga Stradins University charges a EUR 100 application fee and a EUR 1,800 registration administration fee, the second of which applies specifically to Medicine and Dentistry and is non refundable.

• University of Nicosia charges a EUR 60 application fee, a EUR 1,500 administrative fee which is deducted from first semester tuition, a EUR 3,500 refundable seat reservation deposit, EUR 150 for entry visa and alien registration, and a EUR 400 refundable international student guarantee.

• Iuliu Hatieganu UMP, Cluj charges a EUR 300 non refundable application file processing fee.

• Medical University of Bialystok charges a EUR 200 admission fee payable before the interview and a EUR 400 mandatory pre course.

• Charles University, First Faculty of Medicine charges a EUR 285 application fee, and its Pilsen faculty charges CZK 940 for online submission with the entrance exam included.

• University of Szeged builds a EUR 800 deposit into the first semester payment.

• Poznan University of Medical Sciences charges PLN 85 for application processing and PLN 600 for the exam and interview.

Insurance is worth checking university by university rather than assuming. Szeged states that its tuition includes general health insurance valid for Hungary, and Semmelweis includes insurance in tuition for students enrolling from 2024-25. Nicosia charges EUR 180 a year for health insurance plus malpractice insurance of EUR 300 a year in years one to four and EUR 600 to EUR 1,250 in years five and six.

Nicosia also carries a clinical training supplement in the final two years of EUR 6,000 for placements in the United Kingdom or United States, or EUR 3,000 for Switzerland or Germany. That is a real addition to an already high fee and it belongs in the comparison.

What do students spend on living costs, city by city?

This is where published university guidance is most useful, because it comes from the institutions that see what their own students spend.

Prague and Riga are the pair worth studying, because they run in opposite directions to tuition. Charles University Prague has the highest tuition on this list and among the lowest published living costs. Rīga Stradiņš sits in the middle on tuition and publishes the highest living estimate of any university here. Six years of a EUR 600 monthly difference is around EUR 43,000, which is more than the entire tuition gap between several of these universities. Comparing tuition alone will point a family at the wrong answer.

One practical detail for Split: the medical faculty states that foreign students will have to arrange private accommodation, so the subsidised student centre rates of around EUR 100 to EUR 150 a month may not be available to them.

What money must you show for the visa?

This is a separate pot of money and it has to exist in an account before the residence permit is granted.

Slovakia is the one to work out in advance, because the rule and the amount sit in two different documents. Twelve times EUR 295.22 is EUR 3,542.64, and no single official page states that combined figure.

What is the full six year cost of MBBS in Europe?

A worked example for a mid range option, using the published figures above. Take Comenius University in Bratislava at EUR 13,000 a year, with living costs at the lower Slovak range of about EUR 600 a month including rent, utilities and food.

At a round Rs. 100 to the euro, used here only to show the arithmetic, that is roughly Rs. 1.2 crore. Take Cluj at EUR 10,000 a year with similar living costs and the same calculation lands closer to EUR 103,000. Take Charles University Prague or Nicosia and it moves well past EUR 190,000.

There is one more year that belongs in the plan and almost never appears in fee comparisons. After graduating, a foreign medical graduate returning to India clears the FMGE and then completes twelve months of supervised internship in India, which is separate from the internship done abroad. How should you read the comparison?

The honest conclusion from these figures is that the cheapest tuition is not the cheapest degree, and the most expensive tuition is not automatically the best outcome. What the numbers do support is that the total spread across these universities is wide enough that the choice deserves a spreadsheet rather than a shortlist of names.

The questions that actually change the total are which city you live in, whether you get a dormitory place, how the fee is structured across the six years, and whether the university's recognition and course structure satisfy the conditions that let you register in India afterwards. That last one is worth settling before cost, because a cheap degree that does not qualify you costs everything.
