How to Apply
Admission to General Medicine at the University of Szeged is through the university's own entrance examination, made up of a written test and an oral interview. Indian students must also qualify NEET to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate required to study MBBS abroad, but admission to Szeged itself is decided by its entrance exam, not by NEET rank.
The online application window for the 2026/2027 academic year opens through the university's application system.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; confirm the current cycle's final deadline with the university and pay the application fee.
A 60-minute written test with 20 Biology, 20 Chemistry and 20 English questions, followed by an oral interview of about 20 minutes with a professor.
Accepted applicants receive their offer of admission after the written test and interview.
Admitted students confirm their place, pay the first-semester tuition and the €800 deposit, then complete visa and registration steps for Hungary.
The academic year begins for the new intake in Szeged.
Applicants must have completed Class 12 (or equivalent secondary education) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Indian students must have qualified NEET for NMC eligibility. Strong marks in Biology and Chemistry help in the entrance exam.

Legacy
Few universities anywhere can match Szeged's modern scientific legacy, which runs from the discovery of Vitamin C to the mRNA technology behind today's vaccines. Its most influential figures are among the most important scientists in medicine.
Albert Szent-Györgyi was a professor at the University of Szeged when he proved that hexuronic acid was identical to Vitamin C and extracted it in large quantities from Szeged paprika. He won the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries in biological combustion, and the university's medical school is named in his honour.
Katalin Karikó earned her PhD at the University of Szeged and its Biological Research Centre before her pioneering work on messenger RNA. She shared the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discoveries that made the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines possible, saving millions of lives worldwide.
Brunó Ferenc Straub worked as Albert Szent-Györgyi's research assistant at Szeged and was the first to isolate the muscle protein actin in a relatively pure form, a landmark in understanding how muscles work. He founded the Biological Research Centre in Szeged and later served as President of Hungary.
The Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School is led by its Dean, Professor Dr. Márta Széll, the first woman to head the school, who succeeded Professor Dr. György Lázár in 2026. Practising in India
To practise medicine in India after graduating from the University of Szeged, Indian students follow a clear pathway set by the National Medical Commission. NEET qualification is required from the start to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate.
Step 1
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination that licenses foreign medical graduates to practise in India. This is currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is transitioning to the National Exit Test (NExT).
Step 2
After qualifying, students complete a one-year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) in India, gaining supervised clinical experience across the major departments.
Step 3
The final step is registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the relevant State Medical Council, after which the graduate can practise as a doctor in India.
