History of GSVM Medical College Kanpur

The college's history page records that GSVM Medical College came into existence in November 1955. It was the first medical college set up in Uttar Pradesh after independence. It was one of five medical colleges in India started under the Second Five-Year Plan.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, laid the foundation stone on 24 April 1956. Dr. S. N. Mathur was the first Principal. The first students were taught at King George's Medical College, Lucknow, while the Kanpur buildings were finished. Teaching in Kanpur started on 1 August 1957. Chief Minister Dr. Sampurnanand inaugurated the college on 13 December 1959.

The college is named after Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi (1890 to 1931). He was a Kanpur journalist and freedom fighter who founded the weekly paper Pratap. He died in March 1931 while trying to protect people during riots in Kanpur.

The affiliation has changed three times. The college began under Lucknow University. It moved to Kanpur University, now Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, in 1968. The college courses page shows it under Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University since 2021.

• The candidate must be a native resident (mool niwasi) of Uttar Pradesh.

• A candidate who passed both Class 10 and Class 12 in Uttar Pradesh does not need a domicile certificate.

• A candidate who passed Class 10 or Class 12 outside Uttar Pradesh must submit an Uttar Pradesh domicile certificate in the state format.

• Reserved category candidates from other states can register only at the general category NEET cutoff, and get no reservation.

• Candidates who took a seat in the UP NEET UG 2025 stray vacancy or special stray vacancy round and did not join cannot take part in 2026.

A closing rank is the NEET UG All India Rank of the last candidate holding a seat after that round. The pattern matters more than any one number. In 2025, the open closing rank almost tripled between Round 1 and the stray vacancy round, from 4,575 to 12,533. GSVM Kanpur cutoff 2026: Uttar Pradesh state quota

The DGME publishes an institute-wise list of allotted candidates under its allotted and vacant seat results on upneet.gov.in. The table shows the highest NEET UG All India Rank holding a GSVM state quota open seat in each category after Round 2, as listed on 30 September 2026. The NEET score at that rank, from the state merit list, is in brackets.

Two points stand out for an Uttar Pradesh family. First, the state UR seats closed at a later rank than the All India open seats: 6,937 against 5,791 after Round 2. A student near rank 6,500 had a real chance through the state quota but not through the All India Quota. Second, the state list moves less between rounds, because most students allotted in Round 1 kept their seats.

How to get admission to GSVM Medical College Kanpur

There is no separate college test or interview. Admission to the MBBS programme is through NEET UG counselling only, and the steps differ by quota.

All India Quota admission through MCC

1. Register on the MCC UG medical counselling portal and pay the fee and security deposit.

The security deposit is never adjusted against the college fee. The tuition and other college fees for GSVM are paid at the college at the time of admission. Uttar Pradesh returns the security money to the same bank account if no seat is allotted by the end of all rounds.

Documents to upload for UP state counselling

• Class 10 (High School) mark sheet or certificate, which also serves as proof of date of birth.

• Class 12 (Intermediate) mark sheet.

• Reservation certificate if you claim OBC, SC, ST, EWS, ex-servicemen, NCC, freedom fighter or PwD benefits. OBC and EWS certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026.

• Uttar Pradesh domicile certificate, if you did not pass both Class 10 and Class 12 in Uttar Pradesh.

A PwD certificate must come from a centre named by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). At admission, all originals are handed in at the college.

Documents to carry for All India Quota reporting

The MCC Information Bulletin lists these originals, with attested photocopies:

• MCC allotment letter, which names the college and category of the seat.

• NEET UG 2026 admit card and rank letter issued by NTA, the National Testing Agency.

• Class 10 certificate, and a birth certificate if the Class 10 certificate does not show the date of birth.

• Class 12 certificate and mark sheet.

• Eight passport size photographs, the same as on the application form.

• Proof of identity, such as Aadhaar, PAN card, driving licence or passport.

• SC, ST, OBC, EWS or PwD certificate in the prescribed format, where it applies.

Counselling for NEET UG 2026 is in its third round nationally and its second round in Uttar Pradesh.

What if you leave a GSVM Kanpur seat?

Leaving a seat has a cost that rises with each round. Under the Uttar Pradesh policy order for state quota seats:

• After Round 1, a student can leave without penalty (free exit) if they resign at least two days before Round 2 choice filling.

• A student allotted a seat in Round 2 or Round 3 must join. Not joining means the full security money is forfeited.

• A student who resigns after Round 2 loses the security money. Fees paid, except the admission fee, are refunded.

• After Round 3, government college seats cannot be surrendered. Resigning before the stray vacancy round forfeits the security money and all fees paid.

• Leaving the seat after the last round, before finishing the course, bars the student from the next year's admission process.

The policy order also requires every MBBS entrant at an Uttar Pradesh government college to sign a compulsory government service bond, under Government Order 950 of 7 March 2018, as amended.

Hospital and clinical training at GSVM Medical College Kanpur

Students train at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital and its associated hospitals. The college's NMC display form, dated April 2026, lists 2,320 beds, including 209 emergency beds. The college's NIRF 2025 data submission gave 2,136 beds for 2022, with about 1,927 beds occupied on an average day and an average of 4,000 outpatients a day.

• LLR Hospital, the main teaching hospital for the MBBS clinical years.

• Upper India Sugar Exchange Maternity Hospital (UISEMH), for obstetrics and gynaecology training.

• J.K. Cancer Institute, for cancer care and radiation oncology.

• The PMSSY super speciality block, built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.

MBBS course and campus at GSVM Medical College Kanpur

The college courses page gives the MBBS as 4 years and 6 months, followed by a one-year compulsory internship. The course follows the NMC Competency Based Medical Education curriculum, which is the same for every MBBS college in India.
