History of the Institute of Medical Sciences Ranchi

RIMS began in 1960 as Rajendra Medical College Hospital. It was named after Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, according to the RIMS introduction page. The hospital opened in February 1965. Dr. N. L. Mitra was the first principal.

Dr. K. P. Shrivastava was the first director after the college was renamed. The RIMS Act, 2002 and the RIMS Rules notified on 12 August 2002 are listed on the RIMS introduction page. The seat milestones come from the NMC college record.

Is RIMS Ranchi recognised by NMC?

Yes. The NMC college and course search lists Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi as a government college under Ranchi University. The record shows recognition for 90 seats first, then for 150 seats for degrees granted from September 2016. Seats were permitted to rise from 150 to 180 under the EWS quota from 2019-20. Annual renewal was granted for 180 seats for 2024-25 and 2025-26.

EWS means Economically Weaker Section, a reservation for lower income families who are not in another reserved group. RIMS also published a recognition certificate dated 4 July 2025, signed by the dean, stating that RIMS is recognised by NMC. In plain words, an MBBS from RIMS lets a graduate register with a State Medical Council and practise anywhere in India.

How many MBBS seats does RIMS Ranchi have in 2026?

An MBBS in India takes about five and a half years. That is four and a half years of study plus a one-year compulsory rotating internship, under the NMC competency based undergraduate curriculum.

RIMS Ranchi cutoff: All India Quota closing ranks

A closing rank is the NEET All India Rank of the last candidate given a seat in that round. The table shows the range of ranks allotted RIMS MBBS seats in MCC Round 1, taken from the official MCC allotment results. Who is eligible for MBBS admission at RIMS Ranchi?

Eligibility depends on the quota. The rules below come from the official 2026 documents.

All India Quota eligibility at RIMS Ranchi

• NEET UG 2026 qualified. The candidate must clear the NEET UG qualifying percentile for their category. NEET UG is the national medical entrance exam run by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

• No domicile needed. A student from any Indian state can choose RIMS Ranchi in MCC counselling, as set out in the MCC information bulletin 2026.

Jharkhand state quota eligibility at RIMS Ranchi

The JCECEB NEET UG 2026 state counselling notice sets these conditions.

• Age. The candidate must be 17 years old by 31 December 2026. There is no upper age limit.

• Class 12 marks. Passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, with at least 50 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates need 40 per cent. Candidates with disabilities also need 40 per cent.

• A NEET UG 2026 rank. The candidate must appear in the NEET UG 2026 merit list.

• Jharkhand residence. The candidate must be an Indian citizen and a local or permanent resident of Jharkhand. A Local Resident Certificate issued by the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) or Deputy Commissioner is needed at admission.

• Who cannot apply. A candidate who is not a local or permanent resident of Jharkhand cannot take a state quota seat. Such a candidate can still reach RIMS through the All India Quota.

How to get admission to RIMS Ranchi

There is no separate college entrance test and no interview. Every MBBS seat is filled by NEET UG rank through counselling.

All India Quota admission through MCC

1. Register on the MCC UG medical counselling portal and pay the registration fee and security deposit.

2. Fill and lock your choices, placing Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi where you want it in your order.

3. Check the allotment result. If you get RIMS, choose Freeze (keep the seat) or Float (keep it but stay in line for a better choice) as the round allows.

4. Report to RIMS with original documents within the reporting dates.

Jharkhand state quota admission through JCECEB

1. Fill the online application form for the State Merit List on the JCECEB counselling page and pay the application fee.

2. Check your name and rank on the State Merit List.

3. Pay the counselling fee and security money, then fill your choices of college and course. There is no limit on the number of choices.

4. Download the provisional seat allotment letter if you get a seat.

5. Report to the allotted college for document verification and admission within the dates given.

The JCECEB revised schedule dated 17 September 2026 sets these dates for Round 3 of state quota MBBS counselling.

RIMS Ranchi counselling fees and security deposit 2026

These are the official counselling charges. MCC figures come from the MCC information bulletin 2026, and JCECEB figures from the JCECEB NEET UG 2026 state counselling notice.

For JCECEB, the stray vacancy and mop-up round security money is Rs. 50,000. The security money is forfeited if a candidate does not take admission after a seat allotment in Round 2 or a later round. It is refunded if the candidate took a valid admission and no seat was allotted at any later stage.

Documents for Jharkhand state quota admission at RIMS Ranchi

The JCECEB NEET UG 2026 state counselling notice names these certificates. Each must be in the official format and signed by the named authority.

• Local Resident Certificate of Jharkhand. Issued by the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) or Deputy Commissioner. Every state quota candidate needs it.

• Caste certificate. Needed by SC, ST, BC-I and BC-II candidates, from the same authorities. BC-I and BC-II certificates must state that the candidate is not in the creamy layer.

• Income and Assets Certificate. Needed by EWS candidates, from the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) or Deputy Commissioner.

• Disability certificate. Since 2024-25, only certificates from RIMS Ranchi or MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur are accepted. A Civil Surgeon certificate is no longer valid.

• Original certificates at admission. All originals must be shown at the allotted college. Without them, the provisional allotment letter is cancelled.

RIMS Ranchi hospital and clinical exposure

RIMS is a 2,170 bed multi-speciality hospital, according to the RIMS introduction page. It also has an oncology centre with radiation machines, a 50 bed trauma centre, a 50 bed central emergency and a dental college with 50 seats. Patients receive free treatment and essential medicines.

In plain words, RIMS sees over 2,300 outpatients on an average day. For an MBBS student, that means a wide range of cases during clinical postings.

Postgraduate and super-speciality courses at RIMS Ranchi

The NMC college record for RIMS Ranchi lists 18 MD and MS courses with 176 seats, plus DM and MCh super-speciality courses.

In its NIRF 2026 data submission, RIMS reported 900 MBBS students across all years, 765 of them from Jharkhand.

What if things do not go to plan at RIMS Ranchi?

• You miss the JCECEB application window. New candidates could apply only in the dates for each round. Round 3 applications closed on 24 September 2026, so the stray vacancy round is the next chance.

• You get a seat but do not join. Under both MCC and JCECEB rules, the security deposit can be forfeited. MCC can also bar a non-joining candidate from later rounds.

• Your certificate is in the wrong format. JCECEB accepts only the formats and authorities it names. A wrong certificate means the seat allotment is cancelled at admission.

• Your NEET rank is outside the RIMS range. Fill many choices. JCECEB places no limit on the number of choices, and later rounds often reach lower ranks.

If you do not get an MBBS seat at RIMS Ranchi

A foreign MBBS must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021. The course must last at least 54 months, be taught in English and include a 12-month internship at the same university. After that, the graduate passes FMGE, the screening exam for foreign medical graduates, and completes a 12-month supervised internship in India.

FMGE is a real hurdle. In the December 2025 FMGE exam, 10,264 of 42,868 candidates passed, a pass rate of 23.94 per cent, or roughly one in four, according to the NBEMS FMGE performance report 2025.
