History of Gauhati Medical College

The Assam Government under Chief Minister B. P. Chaliha decided in 1959 to open a second medical college in the state. Gauhati Medical College was established on 20 September 1960, according to the college history on the GMCH website. The first MBBS batch had 100 students.

Yes. The NMC college and course search lists Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati as a government college with 250 MBBS seats, affiliated to SSUHS. Its record shows the course recognised for 156 seats. Seats rose from 156 to 200 under the EWS quota from 2019-20. Permission followed to go from 200 to 250, and annual renewal is granted for 250 MBBS seats for 2026-27.

Assam state quota reservation at Gauhati Medical College

Assam state quota seats follow the state's own reservation rules. A DME Assam notice dated 28 August 2025 sets out the reservation in the 85 per cent state quota MBBS and BDS seats.

Assam splits Scheduled Tribe seats into Plains and Hills groups. The state counselling notices also name special categories, such as children of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen, sports and orphans. OBC or MOBC candidates in the creamy layer must apply under the General category.

Gauhati Medical College cutoff: All India Quota closing ranks

A closing rank is the NEET All India Rank of the last candidate given a seat in that round. The table shows the range of ranks allotted MBBS seats at GMCH in each MCC round, taken from the official MCC allotment results.

Two patterns matter. First, an All India Quota open seat at GMCH has needed a NEET rank inside roughly the top 7,000 in both years. Second, ranks move down in later rounds as students upgrade to other colleges. In 2026, the last open seat moved from 6,445 in Round 1 to 6,595 in Round 2.

• NEET UG 2026 qualified. The candidate must clear the NEET UG qualifying percentile for their category. NEET UG is the national medical entrance exam run by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Assam state quota eligibility at Gauhati Medical College

• NEET UG 2026 qualified, and on the Assam state merit list. The DME Assam Round 1 notice 2026 says candidates must be eligible under the Assam MBBS and BDS admission rules of 2017, amended up to 2026.

• Permanent Residency Certificate. The Assam admission annexures include a certificate of 20 years of continuous residence in Assam. It can be for the candidate, the father or the mother, and is signed by the Deputy Commissioner of the district.

• Schooling record from Class 1 to Class 12. The same annexures include a proof of schooling form. A separate form is needed for each school attended.

• Assam category certificates. OBC/MOBC, SC and ST certificates must be in the Assam formats, signed by the named local authorities.

• Who cannot apply. A candidate without Assam permanent residency is not eligible for the state quota. A candidate who joined or holds a seat after MCC Round 3 is removed from Assam Round 3, according to the Round 3 notice.

How to get admission to Gauhati Medical College

There is no separate college entrance test and no interview. Every MBBS seat is filled by NEET UG rank through counselling.

All India Quota admission through MCC

1. Register on the MCC UG medical counselling portal and pay the fee. For All India Quota seats, the MCC information bulletin 2026 sets a non-refundable Rs. 1,000 plus a refundable Rs. 10,000 security deposit for UR and EWS candidates. SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates pay Rs. 500 plus Rs. 5,000.

2. Fill and lock your choices, placing Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati where you want it in your order.

3. Check the allotment result. If you get GMCH, choose Freeze (keep the seat) or Float (keep it but stay in line for a better choice) as the round allows.

4. Report to the college with original documents within the reporting dates.

Assam state quota admission through DME Assam

1. Register online on the DME Assam website in the registration window. Candidates registered in an earlier round do not register again, as the Round 2 notice states.

2. Fill your choices online, then lock them in the locking window. Choices lock automatically at the end of that window.

3. Check the provisional select list on the DME Assam website. The Round 1 select list 2026 shows each candidate's NEET rank, state rank, category, quota and allotted college.

4. Report to GMCH on the admission dates with original documents and one set of photocopies. For Round 1, the GMCH admission notice set 4 and 5 September 2026 at the 7th floor of the Mother and Child Hospital building.

Only one guardian may come with the candidate on admission day, and cars are not allowed inside the campus, according to the GMCH notice.

MBBS course structure at Gauhati Medical College

The MBBS course runs for about five and a half years: four and a half years of study, then a one-year compulsory rotating internship. This follows the NMC competency-based UG curriculum that every Indian medical college uses. Examinations follow SSUHS rules.
