What MBBS actually costs, by college type

Government college tuition is set by the state, and the spread is wide

Tamil Nadu charges Rs. 6,000 a year in tuition at its government medical colleges, Rs. 18,073 once all compulsory heads are added. Kerala charges Rs. 23,150. Madhya Pradesh charges Rs. 1 lakh a year plus refundable caution money of Rs. 14,000.

Private college fees are fixed by a state committee

In Telangana, the Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee set Category B tuition for the 2023 to 2026 block between Rs. 11.55 lakh and Rs. 13.90 lakh a year, giving course totals of Rs. 51.98 lakh to Rs. 62.55 lakh. Kerala’s self financing colleges run from Rs. 8.10 lakh to Rs. 9.31 lakh a year.

Deemed universities sit in a band of their own

Kasturba Medical College Manipal lists a course total of Rs. 71,00,500 for the 2026-27 batch. Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College Pune charges Rs. 29 lakh a year, which over four and a half years comes to Rs. 1.31 crore, with hostel and mess billed separately at Rs. 3.40 lakh a year.

Half the seats in private colleges are meant to cost government rates

NMC’s office memorandum of 3 February 2022 directs that the fee for 50% of seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities should be at par with government college fees in that state. The benefit goes first to candidates holding government quota seats, and it does not touch NRI seats.

NMC has cut the years you can be charged for

NMC’s public notice of 7 April 2026 directs that MBBS fees be charged only for the prescribed academic duration of four and a half years, on the basis that the one year internship is not academic teaching. Telangana rebuilt its fee tables on that basis and Kerala ordered its colleges to follow in July 2026.

Hostel and mess are charged on top, and are optional

The same NMC memorandum states that hostel, mess and transport are entirely optional and students who do not use them are not to be charged for them. Tamil Nadu’s prospectus says plainly that tuition does not include hostel, library or mess fees.
