Academic Excellence

Why Choose Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati, for MBBS

GMC combines Northeast India's top-ranked government hospital, a disease profile found almost nowhere else in India, one of the region's largest MBBS intakes, genuinely affordable government fees, and six decades of pioneering medical tradition.

Top-Ranked Medical College in Northeast India

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is consistently ranked among the top medical institutes in India and holds the #2 spot in Assam behind only AIIMS Guwahati — the highest-ranked medical college in all of Northeast India.

Unparalleled Exposure to Endemic Northeast Diseases

Students encounter kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis), Japanese encephalitis, leptospirosis, scrub typhus and chloroquine-resistant malaria as routine ward cases, building tropical-medicine and infectious-disease competencies that are in high demand for PG programmes.

Apex Referral Hospital for Seven States

GMCH's 1,340-plus bed facility is the final referral destination for critically ill patients from Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura and Sikkim — exposing students to complex, late-presenting cases with advanced pathology.

One of the Largest MBBS Intakes in the Northeast

With 250 MBBS seats per year, GMC has one of the largest annual intakes of any government medical college in the Northeast — a large peer-learning community, well-staffed departments and active NCC, NSS and intercollegiate sports.

Government Fees Make MBBS Genuinely Accessible

Annual fees are approximately ₹31,000 under Assam government regulations, placing total 5.5-year tuition below ₹1.75 lakh — one of the most affordable pathways to a recognised MBBS degree in the country.

Northeast India's Medical Pioneer

Established in 1960 as the region's first modern medical institution, GMC has had 65 years to build academic traditions, PG and super-speciality programmes, research departments and relationships with state health systems across all eight northeastern states.
