Established in 1947, it is one of the oldest and largest medical colleges in the North-East. It is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), Guwahati. It admits 250 MBBS students each year, filled purely on NEET-UG merit through the 15% All India Quota (MCC) and the 85% Assam state quota, and also runs postgraduate MD/MS programmes across about 20 departments (around 176 PG seats) and DM/MCh super-specialty courses in a few branches.

Admission Process for MBBS
Admission to MBBS at Assam Medical College is entirely through NEET-UG merit. As a government college, seats are filled through two routes: the 15% All India Quota via MCC counselling and the 85% Assam state quota via the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Assam.
