History of Government Medical College Kolkata
Medical College Kolkata is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia teaching modern medicine. According to the college history page, it was set up on 28 January 1835. Classes began on 20 February 1835. About 100 students applied, and 20 were selected.

Two patterns matter. First, ranks move down in later rounds as students upgrade elsewhere. The 2025 open closing rank went from 2,714 in Round 1 to 3,581 in Round 2. Second, an open All India Quota seat here has needed a rank inside roughly the top 3,500 in both years. That makes it one of the hardest government seats to get in eastern India.

Who is eligible for admission to Government Medical College Kolkata?

NEET UG 2026 qualified. The candidate must clear the NEET UG cut-off percentile for their category.
No domicile needed. A student from any Indian state can choose Medical College Kolkata in MCC counselling, per the MCC information bulletin 2026.
West Bengal state quota eligibility at Medical College Kolkata
West Bengal domicile. The WBMCC notice cum information bulletin 2026 says either the candidate or a parent must be domiciled in West Bengal. A domicile certificate in the set format is checked in person.
Category certificates from West Bengal only. An SC, ST, OBC or EWS certificate from another state is not accepted. Such a candidate is treated as unreserved in state quota counselling.
OBC non-creamy layer certificate dated on or after 1 April 2026. Without it, an OBC candidate is treated as unreserved.
Age 17 by 31 December 2026. The bulletin lists age proof among the required documents.
Who cannot apply. A candidate with no West Bengal domicile is not considered for state quota seats, whatever their category.
How to get admission to Government Medical College Kolkata
There is no separate college entrance test and no interview. Every MBBS seat is filled by NEET UG rank through counselling.
All India Quota admission through MCC
Register on the MCC UG medical counselling portal and pay the fee. For All India Quota seats this is a non-refundable Rs. 1,000 plus a refundable Rs. 10,000 security deposit for UR and EWS candidates. SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates pay Rs. 500 plus Rs. 5,000.

Register on the WBMCC UG medical and dental counselling page and pay the non-refundable counselling fee. It is Rs. 2,000 for unreserved candidates and Rs. 1,500 for SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS candidates.

Attend physical document verification in person. Only verified candidates can fill choices.

If allotted, go through a second document check at the college and take admission. Pay the college fee and complete the bond at admission.
The Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh security deposits in the West Bengal bulletin apply only to private college seats. A student choosing only government college seats pays the counselling fee alone.

Allotment letter issued by MCC.
NEET UG admit card issued by NTA, the National Testing Agency that runs NEET.
NEET UG result or rank letter issued by NTA.
Date of birth certificate, if the Class 10 certificate does not show it.
Class 10 certificate, Class 12 certificate and Class 12 mark sheet, as proof of schooling and marks.
Eight passport-size photographs, the same as on the application form.
Proof of identity: Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence or passport.
Category certificate where claimed: SC or ST, OBC non-creamy layer (central list), EWS, or the MCC disability board certificate for PwD.

The WBMCC information bulletin 2026 asks for these originals, each with a self-attested photocopy:
Candidate profile letter and payment receipt from the WBMCC portal.
West Bengal domicile certificate in the set proforma, or a valid e-district domicile certificate.
Parent's ID proof, any two of voter card, Aadhaar or passport, where the parent's domicile is used.
Caste certificate issued in West Bengal, where a reserved category is claimed.
NEET UG 2026 admit card and rank card, showing the rank used for allotment.
PwD certificate issued or verified through the MCC and DGHS online process, where claimed.
Age proof showing age 17 by 31 December 2026.

What if you do not join or want to leave a seat at Medical College Kolkata?

In West Bengal, a student who wants to leave after all rounds end can do so only by paying the bond penalty. A bond is a written promise, signed at admission, with a penalty for leaving the seat.

MBBS course structure at Government Medical College Kolkata
The MBBS course runs for about five and a half years: four and a half years of study, then a one-year compulsory rotating internship. This follows the NMC UG curriculum, the competency-based curriculum every Indian medical college uses. Teaching and examinations follow WBUHS rules.
