What resigning an MCC seat costs, round by round

Freeze and float are two different exits

Under the MCC UG Counselling 2026 Information Bulletin, a freeze candidate is satisfied with the allotted seat and reports in person at the institute. A float candidate gives willingness for upgradation online and does not report physically. That split decides how each one resigns.

Round 1 carried a free exit, Round 2 does not

MCC gives Round 1 candidates a free exit with no forfeiture of the security deposit, whether they decline the seat or decline upgradation. From Round 2 onwards a candidate who is allotted a seat and does not join forfeits the deposit.

The deposit at stake is Rs. 10,000, or Rs. 2 lakh

For All India Quota, central university, AIIMS, JIPMER, AFMS and ESIC seats, UR and EWS candidates pay Rs. 1,000 plus a refundable Rs. 10,000 deposit, and SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates pay Rs. 500 plus Rs. 5,000. Deemed universities carry Rs. 5,000 and a refundable Rs. 2 lakh.

Two windows in September, two different outcomes

MCC opened resignation for Round 1 freeze and float candidates until 6 pm on 15 September 2026 without forfeiture. Notice No. 23 of 17 September 2026 reopened it for Round 1 and Round 2 candidates from 3.30 pm on 17 September to 6 pm on 18 September, this time with forfeiture.

How each candidate resigns is not the same

A float candidate resigns online and must generate the seat withdrawal slip through the MCC portal. A freeze candidate reports physically at the allotted institute. MCC treats the resignation as null and void if the letter or slip is not generated on the portal.

Round 3 closes the exit altogether

MCC states that a Round 3 seat cannot be vacated once a candidate joins it, and a candidate who exits Round 3 is eliminated from the remaining rounds. Round 3 registration runs 22 to 27 September 2026, with the allotment result on 30 September.
