Kyrgyzstan State Medical Academy MBBS 2026: Fees, FMGE

Kyrgyzstan State Medical Academy, officially the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), is a public medical university in Bishkek founded in 1939. Its English-medium General Medicine programme runs five years. Year one costs KGS 306,100 (about Rs. 3.4 lakh) for 2026/27. In December 2025, 25.51% of its graduates passed FMGE.

Key Takeaways

  • The state medical academy of Kyrgyzstan. KSMA opened in 1939 as the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute. It became an academy in 1996 and took the name of I.K. Akhunbaev in 2008, per the KSMA history page.

  • Five-year English programme. General Medicine in English lasts five years and needs 12 years of schooling, according to the KSMA page for international applicants.

  • Fees for 2026/27. English-medium tuition is KGS 306,100 a year in years one to three and KGS 288,600 in years four and five. That is about Rs. 16.4 lakh over five years at September 2026 rates.

  • FMGE above the national average. KSMA graduates passed FMGE at 32.77% (2023), 31.56% (2024), 19.33% (June 2025) and 25.51% (December 2025), per NBEMS FMGE reports. Each figure is above the all-India rate for that exam.

  • Listed on WDOMS. The WDOMS entry for I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (ID F0000072) lists a public school, currently operational, teaching since 1939.

  • Central to the 2026 reforms. A presidential decree gave KSMA the exclusive right to provide higher medical education in Kyrgyzstan. In September 2026, students of one private institute were transferred to KSMA.

  • The internship question. India's rules need a 12-month internship at the same foreign university on top of the course. A five-year course plus that internship makes six years in Kyrgyzstan.

What is Kyrgyz State Medical Academy?

Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is the oldest medical university in Kyrgyzstan. A government resolution of 16 April 1939 opened it in Frunze, now Bishkek, with 200 first-year students. The first 120 doctors graduated in 1943. It became the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy in 1996. On 25 September 2008 it was named after I.K. Akhunbaev, a surgeon who had led the institute from 1949 to 1952. These dates come from the KSMA history page.

Today KSMA trains doctors in General Medicine, Paediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Medical and Preventive Care and Nursing. Teaching is in Russian and English. The rector is Professor Indira Kudaibergenova, who also signs the academy's fee list.

Kyrgyz State Medical Academy faculties for foreign students

KSMA started a department with part teaching in English in 2001, with 11 students from Pakistan and Nepal. The Faculty for Foreign Citizens followed in 2004. In September 2023 it was split into two faculties, as set out on the Faculty of General Medicine in English No. 1 page.

  • Faculty of General Medicine in English No. 1. Led by Dean Tugolbay Tagaev since September 2025. One of its deputy deans is based at the Tash-Dobo campus outside Bishkek.

  • Faculty of General Medicine in English No. 2. Led by Dean Meerim Taalaibekova. The faculty page reports 1,637 students from 17 countries, including India, Pakistan and Nepal.

  • Tash-Dobo campus. Opened by an order of August 2018 for first-year foreign students. It has 3 teaching buildings and 3 dormitories, one for women and two for men.

  • Hostel No. 1 in Bishkek. Next to the main building, with space for 360 students in 3 and 4 bed rooms, per the KSMA hostel page.

Is Kyrgyzstan State Medical Academy the same as the International School of Medicine?

No. Three Bishkek names are often mixed up, and each is a separate institution. NBEMS, which runs FMGE, reports each one on its own line.

There is a historical link. KSMA states that its Faculty for Foreign Citizens was set up in 2004 partly from structures of the International Higher School of Medicine. IHSM's own history page gives 2003 as its founding year. Today IHSM and KSMA run separately, with different fees, admissions and results. Always check that an offer letter carries the full name "I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy".

If you are looking at the other two, read our International School of Medicine page and our guide to the International University of Kyrgyzstan.

Is Kyrgyz State Medical Academy recognised by NMC and WDOMS?

KSMA is listed on WDOMS, the World Directory of Medical Schools run by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and FAIMER. The WDOMS entry gives FAIMER School ID F0000072, school type public, and status currently operational.

  • English programme on WDOMS. "General Medicine in English Language" is listed with five years of study, English as the language of teaching and the title Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). Teaching began in 2001.

  • Accreditation. The six-year Russian-language General Medicine programme was accredited on 15 May 2023 by the Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs and Organizations (AAEPO). WDOMS notes that AAEPO is recognised by WFME.

  • ECFMG eligibility. WDOMS shows that graduates from 1953 to the current year can apply for ECFMG certification, the route to United States licensing exams.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), India's medical regulator, does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Its information desk for students going abroad says it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions. What counts is whether the degree meets NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Our guide on checking NMC and WDOMS recognition explains how to read these listings.

NMC rules a Kyrgyz State Medical Academy degree must meet

The NMC FMGL Regulations, 2021 set these conditions for a licence to practise in India:

  • Course length. The course must run at least 54 months. The five-year KSMA programme is 60 months.

  • Internship abroad. A 12-month internship is needed in addition to the course, at the same foreign institution that awards the degree.

  • English medium. The whole course must be taught in English.

  • One institution, one country. The course, training and internship must all be done at the same institution, with no part in India or a third country.

  • Licence in Kyrgyzstan. The graduate must be registered with the body that licenses doctors in Kyrgyzstan, on par with Kyrgyz citizens.

  • Ten-year limit. The course must be completed within ten years of joining.

  • Back in India. The graduate must pass the screening exam, currently FMGE, and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India. Read more on what the FMGE exam is.

How long is the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy MBBS course?

General Medicine in English at KSMA lasts five years. The Russian-language General Medicine programme lasts six years. Both durations are stated on the KSMA international applicants page.

This matters for Indian students. NMC rules require a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, on top of the course. So plan for five years of study plus one year of internship at KSMA, which is six years in total. Ask KSMA in writing how and where that internship year is delivered before you pay.

Kyrgyzstan State Medical Academy fees for 2026/27

KSMA publishes a signed price list for students from outside the CIS countries. The 2026/27 list was approved by the academy's Financial Committee on 29 May 2026. It is linked from the KSMA tuition fee page as a PDF price list.

The list sets the English-medium fee for years one and two at USD 3,500. It converts this at the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic rate of KGS 87.45 to 1 US dollar. Rupee figures below use that rate and the RBI reference rate of about Rs. 95.98 to 1 US dollar (30 September 2026). That is roughly Rs. 1.10 for every KGS 1.

What the 2026 rule changes mean for Kyrgyz State Medical Academy

Medical education in Kyrgyzstan is being reorganised, and KSMA sits at the centre. Presidential Decree No. 250 of August 2025 created a state monopoly on training doctors. It gave KSMA the exclusive right to provide higher medical and pharmaceutical education, per the Embassy of India, Bishkek advisory on the decree.

  • Private universities. The Ministry of Health was told to complete state accreditation of private medical universities by 1 June 2026.

  • Future of accredited private universities. Those that pass may later become branches or units of KSMA, under its academic supervision.

  • Those that fail. They may operate only as preparatory courses or clinical training bases, also under KSMA's control.

  • Student transfers. Ministry of Health order No. 1074 of 14 September 2026 transferred five-year students of Bishkek International Medical Institute to KSMA. The order is published on the Embassy of India, Bishkek website.

Admissions are changing too. The Cabinet of Ministers created a state International Students Admission Center by Resolution No. 189 of 19 March 2026, per the Embassy advisory of 23 June 2026. The Embassy advisory of 25 August 2026 asks students to follow the orders this office releases.
