What is Osh State University?

Osh State University is a public university in Osh, the main city of southern Kyrgyzstan. It opened in 1939 as the Osh Teachers' Institute. It became a pedagogical institute in 1951 and a university in 1992.

Today the university reports more than 50,000 students and nearly 4,000 staff. It has 8 institutes, 4 faculties, 10 student dormitories and 2 medical clinics, according to its About Us page.

Osh State University medical faculties

Osh State University teaches medicine through two faculties. They follow different programmes and fee scales.

  • International Medical Faculty. This is the faculty for foreign students, including Indian students. The university's Academic Council approved it on 29 August 2015, as stated on the International Medical Faculty page. It teaches General Medicine in English over five years.

  • Medical Faculty. This faculty teaches General Medicine over six years, along with dentistry, paediatrics, pharmacy and other health programmes. The WDOMS entry records that medical teaching at the university began in 1993.

Be careful with names. "Osh International Medical University" is a separate institution with its own FMGE results. It is not part of Osh State University.

Is Osh State University recognised by NMC and WDOMS?

Osh State University Medical Faculty is listed on WDOMS, the World Directory of Medical Schools. WDOMS is run by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and FAIMER. The WDOMS entry gives FAIMER School ID F0000578, school type public, and status currently operational.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), India's medical regulator, does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Its information desk for students going abroad says it "does not endorse any list" of foreign medical institutions. What matters is whether the degree meets NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021.

We explain how to read these listings in our guide to checking NMC and WDOMS recognition.

NMC rules an Osh State University degree must meet

The NMC FMGL Regulations, 2021 set these conditions for a licence to practise in India:

  • Course length. The course must run at least 54 months. The five-year programme at Osh State University is 60 months.

  • Internship abroad. A 12-month internship is needed in addition to the course, at the same foreign institution that awards the degree.

  • English medium. The degree must be taught with English as the medium of instruction.

  • One institution, one country. The whole course, training and internship must be done at the same institution, with no part in India or a third country.

  • Licence in Kyrgyzstan. The graduate must be registered with the body that licenses doctors in Kyrgyzstan, on par with Kyrgyz citizens.

  • Ten-year limit. The course must be completed within ten years of joining.

  • Back in India. The graduate must pass the screening exam, currently FMGE, and complete 12 months of supervised internship in India. Read more on what the FMGE exam is.

How long is the Osh State University MBBS course?

The Osh State University programme for foreign students is five years. The university's own tariff order names it "General Medicine (5 years), education in English". Kyrgyz students in the Medical Faculty follow a six-year course.

This matters for Indian students. NMC rules require a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, in addition to the course. So a student should plan for five years of study plus one year of internship at Osh State University, which is six years in total. Ask the university in writing where and how that internship year is delivered before you pay.

Osh State University MBBS fees for 2026/27

Osh State University publishes its fees in a signed price list. The 2026/27 list is rector's order 2375 of 30 April 2026. Order 3038 of 15 June 2026 then cut the first-year fee from KGS 330,000 to KGS 325,000. Both are on the Osh State University tuition fees page.

Rupee figures use the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic rate of about KGS 87.45 to 1 US dollar and the RBI reference rate of about Rs. 95.98 to 1 US dollar (30 September 2026). That is roughly Rs. 1.10 for every KGS 1.

What the 2026 Kyrgyzstan rule changes mean for Osh State University

Medical education in Kyrgyzstan is being reorganised. A presidential decree gave the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy the exclusive right to provide higher medical education. It also ordered state accreditation of private medical universities by 1 June 2026. The Embassy of India, Bishkek advisory on the decree sets this out.

Osh State University is a state university, not a private one. The decree's accreditation deadline and the September 2026 student transfers were aimed at private institutions. Osh State University is not named in the Kyrgyz Health Ministry transfer order of 14 September 2026.

Admissions for foreign students are also changing. A state International Students Admission Center was created on 19 March 2026 to handle foreign applicants, per the Embassy advisory of 23 June 2026. The Embassy advisory of 25 August 2026 asks students to follow the Center's orders as they are released.
