What is Eastern Medical College, Comilla?

Eastern Medical College (EMC) is a non-government medical college at Kabila, Burichang, on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Cumilla District. Cumilla is the newer spelling of Comilla. The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) entry gives 2005 as the year teaching began. WDOMS is a global list of medical schools. It lists the college as private, English medium, with a five-year curriculum.

The college was first affiliated with the University of Chittagong. The BMDC college list places it under Chittagong Medical University from the 2017 to 2018 session. The university now registers students and runs the professional exams. The college's admission page lists a 600-bed hospital, separate hostels for men and women, a library and lecture halls.

Is Eastern Medical College recognised for Indian students?

Yes, the degree fits the route an Indian student needs, as long as the student follows India's rules from the start. Recognition rests on three separate checks.

India's National Medical Commission (NMC) does not publish a list of approved foreign colleges. Instead, the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 set conditions on the course. It must last at least 54 months and be taught in English. The 12-month internship must be done at the same foreign institution. The graduate must also be eligible for a licence in the country of study.

All Bangladesh medical colleges teach the national BMDC MBBS Curriculum 2021. It has four phases. Each phase ends with a professional exam set by the university, here Chittagong Medical University.

Clinical teaching takes place at the 600-bed Eastern Medical College Hospital on the campus. The fee schedule notes that foreign students who do the internship at this hospital may pay extra fees under government rules.

Who can apply to Eastern Medical College from India?

Foreign admission to Bangladesh private colleges follows the Bangladesh government's yearly admission policy. The main conditions are these.

• Science subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12.

• Grade points: the Bangladesh authorities convert Class 10 and Class 12 marks into grade points. The college's admission page asks for at least 3.5 grade points in each exam and at least 3.5 in Class 12 Biology. The combined minimum is set each year by the BMDC national admission policy.

• Equivalence certificate: the college's admission page says the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Dhaka issues it. Admission cannot be completed without it.

• NEET: the NMC information desk for students going abroad requires Indian students to qualify NEET before an MBBS abroad. A qualifying result stays valid for three years.

Eastern Medical College admission process, step by step

The steps below come from the college's admission information for foreign students.

1. Get documents attested. Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and mark sheets are attested by the education authority and India's Ministry of External Affairs.

2. Apply through the Bangladesh mission. Foreign students apply between September and December through the Bangladesh High Commission in India, with the attested documents.

3. Receive the equivalence certificate. DGHS in Dhaka issues it, either through the mission or at its Dhaka office.

4. Reserve the seat. The college issues a provisional letter. A USD 3,000 seat reservation is due within 20 days of that letter, and it is not refunded.

5. Complete admission. Submit the prescribed form, attested certificates and mark sheets, the equivalence certificate, three colour photographs and a passport copy. The college keeps the original documents until the course ends.

6. Start classes. First-year MBBS classes usually begin in the first week of January, or as the government decides each year.

Government colleges run a separate quota. Fees are charged in US dollars. The college's financial information for foreign students (session 2021 to 2022, dated 11 August 2021) is its most recent published schedule. Lodging is included, food is not. Rupee values use about Rs. 96 to the US dollar (September 2026).

All payments go straight to the college account by telegraphic transfer. The schedule names Dhaka Bank, Cumilla Branch, as the receiving bank.

Eastern Medical College FMGE pass rate

FMGE results show how well a college prepares Indian students. The figures below come from the official NBEMS reports for 2023, 2024 and 2025. NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, runs FMGE.

The record is uneven. Results rose to 37.50 per cent in 2024, fell sharply to 12.24 per cent in June 2025, then recovered to 34.72 per cent in December 2025. That is roughly one in three passing in a good session. For comparison, all Bangladesh graduates passed at 31.52 per cent in June 2025 and 34.45 per cent in December 2025. The national rate for all countries was 18.62 per cent and 23.94 per cent.

Graduates who want to work outside India sit that country's own licensing exam instead, such as USMLE for the United States or PLAB for the United Kingdom. These are separate from FMGE.

Hostel and campus at Eastern Medical College

The college's admission page lists separate hostels for men and women, with attached bathrooms and security. The college names Major Gani Hall as the boys' hostel and Shanti-Sunitee Hall as the girls' hostel. Lodging is part of the foreign student fee, so there is no separate monthly rent in the schedule.

The library has free Wi-Fi. It is registered with the WHO HINARI programme, which gives students free online access to medical journals.

Rules at Eastern Medical College that catch families out

• Leaving early is costly: the fee schedule says a student who leaves within one year of admission must pay 65 per cent of the agreed total before getting a clearance certificate.

• Seat reservation is not refunded: the USD 3,000 paid after the provisional letter is lost if the student does not join.

• Original documents stay with the college: the college keeps them until the course is complete, so make attested copies first.

• Extra years cost more: irregular students pay USD 1,000 a year in session fees on top of tuition.

• Internship location: the 12-month internship must be done in Bangladesh at the same institution. Under the FMGL Regulations, any part done elsewhere breaks India's rule.

• Bangla on the wards: teaching is in English, but most patients in Cumilla speak Bangla. Students need it to take a patient history in the clinical years.
