MBBS in Bangladesh 2026: SAARC Quota, Seats and Real Fees

India gets 22 MBBS seats and 2 BDS seats in Bangladeshi government medical colleges under the SAARC quota, and Indian students admitted to those seats pay the same tuition as Bangladeshi students. That single rule is the most valuable thing about MBBS in Bangladesh, and almost nobody explains it properly.

Everything else about MBBS in Bangladesh is priced by the college itself. Private medical colleges in Bangladesh have no notified fee ceiling for foreign students, and the published figures at the colleges that do disclose them run from about USD 32,000 to USD 45,000 for the full course.

What does India actually get under the SAARC quota?

The Directorate General of Medical Education publishes a separate admission circular for foreign students each session. The 2025/26 circular for government colleges, memo number 59.14.0000.103.33.001.25.1127 of 10 November 2025, allocated 224 seats to foreign students in total: 125 under the SAARC quota and 99 for non SAARC countries under the Bangladesh Government scholarship programme.

The circular states plainly that no SAARC country student will be given admission in the seats reserved for non SAARC candidates. India sits inside SAARC, so an Indian applicant for a government college is competing for 22 MBBS seats and nothing more. Selection is on GPA merit, not on an entrance examination in Bangladesh.

Private colleges take a different shape of MBBS in Bangladesh intake. There is no country quota at all. The cap is that a non government medical college, dental college or dental unit may take a maximum of 45% of its total allocated seats as foreign students. With Enam Medical College at 155 seats and Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College at 145, that ceiling is a much larger pool than the government route.

MBBS in Bangladesh fees: the government rule that surprises people

The government circular tuition clause reads, in terms: students from SAARC countries will be required to pay tuition and other fees at the rate charged to a Bangladeshi student, while students from other countries pay USD 5,000 per year in addition to the Bangladeshi rate.

For an Indian student that is a genuine concession worth about Rs. 4.79 lakh a year against a non SAARC applicant. The Bangladeshi student rate itself is not published in the circular and the four major government colleges do not publish a fee schedule on their own sites, so the number to ask each college for is the domestic tuition figure, in writing, before applying.

Why is there no fee ceiling for private colleges?

Because the circular expressly delegates it. The non government circular of the same date says information regarding tuition fees charged by non government medical colleges can be obtained directly from the colleges concerned. There is no notified maximum, no gazette ceiling and no centrally published band. Two colleges that do publish their foreign student schedules give a sense of the real range.

Enam also publishes the running costs, which is unusual and useful: hostel at USD 70 to USD 100 a month, food at about Tk 4,000 a month, examination fees of Tk 50,000 across the four professional examinations, and a registration fee of Tk 1,000. It states that the college pays interns Tk 20,000 a month, about Rs. 15,600, during the internship year. Conversions use the Reserve Bank of India rate of 1 USD to 95.8855 INR and the Bangladesh Bank cross rate of 1 INR to about 1.28 BDT on 17 September 2026.

One fee is central and applies to everyone. Each application carries a non refundable USD 100 equivalence fee, about Rs. 9,600, paid by telegraphic transfer to the Director, Medical Education, at Rupali Bank in Dhaka before applying. Government and private streams are separate applications, so applying to both means paying it twice.

MBBS in Bangladesh eligibility, and where the two streams differ

Both circulars set the same shape of requirement and different thresholds. O level or equivalent must have been passed no earlier than 2022, A level or equivalent in 2024 or 2025, and the A level must be completed within three years of the O level. O level GPA counts the top five subjects, A level GPA counts physics, chemistry and biology only.

Ties in the government merit list are broken by cumulative GPA, then by the individual grade point in biology, then chemistry, then physics, then total marks in the three subjects, then by the older date of birth.

Is NEET required for MBBS in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh does not ask for it and India does. Neither the government nor the private circular mentions NEET anywhere; admission is decided on GPA. The National Medical Commission requires any Indian citizen obtaining a primary medical qualification abroad on or after May 2018 to have qualified NEET, and treats the NEET result as the eligibility certificate, valid for three years from the date the result is declared. The High Commission of India in Dhaka restates the same requirement in its guidance.

The practical effect is blunt. You can be admitted to MBBS in Bangladesh without NEET and you will not be able to register the degree in India afterwards.

How long is MBBS in Bangladesh, and what about the internship?

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council curriculum sets the MBBS course at five years followed by a compulsory logbook based rotatory internship of one year, with English as the medium of instruction. Sixty months of course clears India fifty four month minimum comfortably, and the English medium condition is met on the face of the curriculum.

The internship is where the documents need reading side by side. The Council curriculum specifies that within the twelve month internship, eleven months are spent at the respective medical college hospital and one month at an Upazila Health Complex or field level placement. India Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a twelve month internship in the same foreign medical institution, and the National Medical Commission has stated the requirement as twelve months to be completed at the same foreign university.

The Upazila month is a mandated part of the awarding college own logbook internship, not a separate posting the student arranges. Even so, it is the one structural point on this route worth raising with the college and with the Commission in writing before you commit, because it is the kind of detail that is only ever queried after graduation. Internship training is also a precondition for Council registration in Bangladesh, so it cannot be skipped.

Recognition

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council publishes the list of recognised medical and dental colleges, organised by affiliating university and split between government and non government. One hundred and ten Bangladeshi medical schools appear on the World Directory of Medical Schools, including Dhaka Medical College, Chittagong Medical College, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Rajshahi Medical College, Bangladesh Medical College, Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College, Enam Medical College and Community Based Medical College. As of 17 September 2026, no National Medical Commission notice, advisory, or alert names Bangladesh or any Bangladeshi institution.

Two colleges are worth knowing about from the 2025/26 private circular. MBBS admission was suspended at Bikrampur Bhuiyan Medical College in Munshiganj and at Monowara Sikder Medical College in Shariatpur, and four further colleges were marked as admitting local students only.

What to do next about MBBS in Bangladesh

1. Watch for the 2026/27 circular. The 2025/26 circulars were published on 10 November 2025, so the next set is due around October or November 2026. Nothing for 2026/27 has been published as of 17 September 2026.

2. Sit NEET first. Without a valid NEET result the Bangladeshi degree cannot be registered in India, whatever the college says at admission.

3. Decide government or private before you pay anything. The government route means 22 MBBS seats, a GPA aggregate of 8.50 and Bangladeshi student tuition. The private route means a 45% cap, a GPA aggregate of 7.00 and a fee the college sets.

4. Get the equivalence certificate moving early. Indian certificates need equivalence through the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi or the nearest Deputy High Commission, and academic documents must be attested by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of External Affairs.

5. Ask the college for the internship structure in writing, specifically where the twelve months are served and how the Upazila month is recorded in the logbook.

6. Register with the High Commission of India in Dhaka on arrival. It runs a student registration portal and a round the clock helpline, and it states in its guidance that it cannot take responsibility for refunds or for disputes with education consultants.
