What is Dhaka National Medical College?
Dhaka National Medical College (DNMC) is a non-government medical college at 53/1 Johnson Road, near Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka. The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) college list places it among the non-government medical colleges under the University of Dhaka. BMDC is the body that registers doctors and medical colleges in Bangladesh.
The college grew out of the Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital, founded in 1925 on the same Johnson Road site. According to the college history page, the medical college itself opened in 1994. Its foundation stone was laid on 15 October 1995, and teaching now runs from an 11-storey academic building. The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) entry gives 1995 as the year instruction started.
The college admitted its 32nd MBBS batch (N-32) in the 2025 to 2026 session. It also runs a BDS dental course, which took its 11th batch the same year. The principal is Prof. Dr. Md. Shamsur Rahman.
Is Dhaka National Medical College recognised for Indian students?
Yes, the degree fits the route an Indian student needs, provided the student follows India's rules from day one. Recognition rests on three separate checks.
Check | What it shows for DNMC | Official source |
|---|---|---|
Bangladesh regulator | Listed by BMDC as a non-government medical college under the University of Dhaka | |
World directory | Listed in WDOMS: private, English medium, five-year curriculum, currently operational | |
Indian licence | Graduates sit FMGE, the screening exam for doctors with a foreign degree, before they can practise in India |
India's National Medical Commission (NMC) does not publish a list of approved foreign colleges. Instead, the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 set conditions on the course itself. The course must last at least 54 months and be taught in English. The 12-month internship must be done at the same foreign institution. The graduate must also be eligible for a licence in the country of study.
The Bangladesh MBBS meets these on paper. It runs five years (60 months) in English, followed by a one-year internship at the college's own hospital. Back in India, the graduate then passes FMGE and completes a 12-month supervised internship in India. Our guide on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition explains each check step by step.

Who can apply to Dhaka National Medical College from India?
The college's admission FAQ for foreign students (session 2025 to 2026) lists the academic rules. They follow the Bangladesh government's rules for all foreign MBBS applicants.
Twelve years of schooling: Class 10 and Class 12, matched by the Bangladesh authorities to their SSC and HSC levels.
Recent passing years: for the 2025 to 2026 session, Class 10 had to be passed in 2022 or later and Class 12 in 2024 or later.
Science subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12.

Dhaka National Medical College admission process, step by step
Foreign admission is controlled by the Bangladesh government, not the college alone. The college's admission FAQ sets out these steps.
Get documents attested. Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, mark sheets, school leaving certificate and passport copy are attested by the education board and India's Ministry of External Affairs.
Pay the application fee. USD 100, non-refundable, sent by telegraphic transfer or SWIFT.
Apply through the Bangladesh mission. The prescribed form, documents and bank receipt go to the Bangladesh High Commission in India. Only applications sent through a Bangladesh mission are accepted.
Equivalence and permission. The Directorate General of Medical Education and the Directorate General of Health Services issue the grade equivalence certificate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives permission to admit.
Book a seat with the college. Send copies of certificates, passport and a letter of intent to admission@dnmc.edu.bd for advance seat booking.
Confirm admission. Once the permission letter and equivalence arrive, the college completes the admission. Original certificates are shown at this point, and a medical check-up follows.
Government colleges run a separate quota. For the 2025 to 2026 session, the Bangladesh High Commission notice on foreign admission to government colleges listed 224 SAARC and non-SAARC seats. Applications ran from 11 November to 22 December 2025. Our post on the SAARC quota and fees in Bangladesh covers that route.

The instalment system is still in use. In August 2026, a college notice to foreign students of batch N-31 asked them to clear the 4th instalment by 30 September 2026.
Costs on top of the fee schedule
Professional exam fees: paid by the student for each university exam.
Taxes: any VAT the government adds is paid by the student.
Repeat time: if a student loses a session, tuition and hostel charges continue for the extra months.
Travel and visa: flights, visa fees and personal spending are not in the schedule.
The schedule lists no scholarships or fee waivers for foreign students. For help planning six years of spending, see our guide to financial planning for MBBS abroad.
Dhaka National Medical College FMGE pass rate
FMGE results are the clearest proof of how the college prepares Indian students. The figures below come from the official NBEMS reports for 2023, 2024 and 2025. NBEMS is the board that runs FMGE.
FMGE session | Appeared | Passed | Pass rate |
|---|---|---|---|
2023 (both sessions) | 94 | 26 | 27.66% |
2024 (both sessions) | 100 | 33 | 33.00% |
June 2025 | 66 | 31 | 46.97% |
December 2025 | 87 | 42 | 48.28% |
The trend is upward, from about one in four passing in 2023 to almost one in two in late 2025. For comparison, all Bangladesh graduates together passed at 31.52 per cent in June 2025 and 34.45 per cent in December 2025. The national rate for all countries was 18.62 per cent in June 2025 and 23.94 per cent in December 2025.
Even at this college, more than half of the candidates in each session did not pass. Families should plan for FMGE preparation from the clinical years onwards. Our FMGE pass rate analysis for MBBS abroad and the country-wise FMGE pass rate web story show how Bangladesh compares with other countries. Exam dates are on the NBEMS FMGE page.

Rules at Dhaka National Medical College that catch families out
No refund, no transfer: the fee schedule states that withdrawal or transfer is not allowed and no money is returned after cancellation.
Monthly payment deadlines: tuition is due by the 15th of each month. Late payment costs USD 1 a day. After three unpaid months, the student is struck off the attendance register and pays USD 200 plus arrears to re-enrol (N-32 notice).
Bangla with patients: the admission FAQ says foreign students must learn Bangla to talk with patients, even though teaching is in English.
Equivalence certificate: admission cannot be completed until the Bangladesh health authorities issue it, so documents must be attested early.
Passport records: in 2026 the college asked foreign students twice to submit passport and visa copies for the national security authorities. Keep these documents up to date.
Internship location: the 12-month internship must be done in Bangladesh at the same institution. Under the FMGL Regulations, any part done elsewhere breaks India's rule.
For a country-level view of these limits, read our post on the disadvantages of MBBS in Bangladesh, or flip through the MBBS in Bangladesh web story.
What if a Dhaka National Medical College seat does not work out?
If the equivalence certificate is late: the college will not complete admission without it. Advance booking money is covered by the no-refund rule, so ask about timelines before paying.
If NEET is not qualified: an Indian student cannot take a foreign MBBS that counts in India. The option is to sit NEET again, as the score stays valid for three years once qualified.
If a government seat is preferred: apply in the government foreign student quota, which opens once a year through the Bangladesh mission.
If Europe is an option: futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in 9 European countries, from the Czech Republic to Cyprus.
Conclusion: is Dhaka National Medical College right for you?
Dhaka National Medical College offers a University of Dhaka MBBS with a 100-year-old hospital behind it. It also has one of the stronger FMGE records among Bangladesh colleges, with 48.28 per cent passing in December 2025. The costs are clear but firm. Plan for about USD 59,000 over five years, with no refund once admission is cancelled.
The deciding questions are practical. Can the family meet monthly dollar payments for five years? Is the student ready to learn enough Bangla for ward work? Can they prepare for FMGE alongside the course? If the answers are yes, the college fits the NMC route. Compare it with other options on our Bangladesh country page.
