FMGE 2026 Pass Rate: 12.8% in June 2026, What It Means

The FMGE 2026 pass rate fell to about 12.8 per cent in the June 2026 session, so roughly one candidate in eight passed. The NBEMS result for FMGE June 2026 lists 4,635 passes among about 36,300 candidates who sat the exam. The pass mark did not change. The next session is on 31 October 2026.

Updated on 1 October 2026.

FMGE 2026 pass rate: key takeaways

  • The FMGE 2026 pass rate for June was about 12.8 per cent. The NBEMS FMGE results page carries the June 2026 result list: 37,448 roll numbers, 1,148 absent, 20 results withheld and 4,635 passes.

  • That is about half the previous session. In December 2025, 10,264 of 42,868 candidates passed, a rate of 23.94 per cent (NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025).

  • The pass mark stayed the same. A candidate passes with at least 150 marks out of 300. There is no negative marking and no limit on attempts (NBEMS FMGE October 2026 information bulletin).

  • FMGE now runs three times a year. NBEMS has scheduled the October 2026 session for 31 October 2026, with the result due by 30 November 2026.

  • Results differ sharply by country. In December 2025 the pass rate ranged from about 14 per cent for China graduates to about 40 per cent for Uzbekistan graduates, on the same paper.

FMGE June 2026 result at a glance

FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is the screening test for doctors with a foreign MBBS. An Indian graduate must pass it before registering to practise in India. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) runs it. The NBEMS notice dated 7 July 2026 declared the June 2026 result.

The pass count comes from the result list that NBEMS linked in its notice. NBEMS also reviewed every question after the exam. Where a question was technically wrong, all candidates who sat the exam got the marks. Where a question had two correct answers, either answer scored. Two points about the FMGE 2026 pass rate stand out for parents. First, June 2026 is the lowest rate in this four-year run. Second, the rate has swung between sessions before. It moved from 18.62 per cent in June 2025 to 23.94 per cent six months later. A single session is a warning sign, but it does not by itself show a permanent trend.

The same report lists results university by university. Before you pay a deposit, find the university's own row in the NBEMS institute-wise report. A university with hundreds of graduates sitting FMGE and a pass rate far below the national average tells you more than any brochure.

Why does the FMGE 2026 pass rate matter so much for MBBS abroad?

FMGE tests the Indian MBBS syllabus in 300 questions over two parts on one day. The FMGE October 2026 information bulletin sets the bar at 150 marks out of 300. It is a pass or fail screening test, not a rank list. Nobody fails because seats ran out. A low pass rate means fewer candidates reached a fixed bar.

For a family, this is the real finish line. A foreign degree lets a graduate work as a doctor in that country. FMGE is what opens registration with a State Medical Council in India. A graduate who does not pass cannot practise in India, however many years and lakhs went into the degree.

Preparation is the part a student controls. The country table above shows that graduates who sat the same paper passed at very different rates. The difference comes from teaching, clinical training and how early a student starts studying the Indian syllabus.

Who has to take FMGE in 2026, and who is exempt?

Any Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) with a medical degree from outside India must pass FMGE to get provisional or permanent registration in India. This rule comes from the Screening Test Regulations, 2002, as quoted in the NBEMS FMGE October 2026 information bulletin.

The exemption is narrow. A candidate does not need FMGE only if all three of these apply:

  • Undergraduate degree from one of five countries. The MBBS or equivalent must come from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.

  • Postgraduate degree from one of the same five countries. The doctor must also hold a postgraduate medical qualification from one of these countries.

  • Registered to practise there. The doctor must be recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in that country.

An MBBS from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland or any other European Union country does not qualify for this exemption. Graduates of the 23 futureMBBS partner universities in 9 European countries sit FMGE like every other foreign graduate.

NMC rules a foreign MBBS must meet before FMGE

Passing FMGE is not enough on its own. Students who joined a foreign course under the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 must also meet these conditions:

  • Course length of at least 54 months. The medical course itself must run for a minimum of fifty-four months.

  • Twelve-month internship abroad at the same institution. The internship must be done at the same foreign university that awards the degree.

  • English as the medium of instruction. The degree must be taught in English.

  • Whole course at one foreign institution. The course, training and internship must all be done outside India at the same foreign medical institution.

  • Finish within ten years. The course must be completed within ten years of joining.

  • Twelve-month supervised internship in India. After passing FMGE, the graduate completes a further year of supervised internship in India before full registration.

An Indian student also needs to qualify NEET UG before going abroad. Our guide to the eligibility certificate for MBBS abroad explains the paperwork, and the full list of NMC rules sits on the NMC rules and regulations page.

FMGE October 2026: dates and fee for the next session

Candidates who did not pass in June 2026 can sit again on 31 October 2026. NBEMS states in the FMGE October 2026 information bulletin that it will now hold FMGE three times a year. There is no limit on the number of attempts.

Does NExT replace FMGE in 2026?

No. FMGE is still the licensing test for foreign medical graduates in 2026. The FMGE October 2026 information bulletin runs the exam under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. NExT, the National Exit Test, is not the exam foreign graduates sit this year. Our explainer on the National Exit Test (NExT) tracks its status.

Does the FMGE 2026 result mean you should avoid MBBS abroad?

No, but it should change how you choose. The demand for seats is still far larger than supply in India. In NEET UG 2026, 11.21 lakh candidates qualified, according to the NTA NEET UG 2026 result press release. India has 1,23,700 MBBS seats in 808 colleges, according to a Press Information Bureau release of 24 September 2025. Roughly one qualified candidate in nine can get any MBBS seat in India.

What the FMGE 2026 result does show is that the university matters more than the country label. A low fee at a university whose graduates rarely pass FMGE is the costliest choice a family can make. Six years and the full fee can end without a licence to practise in India.

How to choose an MBBS abroad university with the FMGE 2026 result in mind

  1. Check the university's own FMGE record. Look up its row in the NBEMS institute-wise report and compare it with the national rate for the same session.

  2. Confirm the course meets the NMC rules. At least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university and English teaching throughout.

  3. Look for real clinical training. FMGE has many clinical questions. Hospital rotations with patient contact build the knowledge the exam tests.

  4. Ask how the curriculum maps to the Indian syllabus. The closer the subjects match, the less a student has to self-study for FMGE.

  5. Start FMGE study early. A student who revises Indian-syllabus subjects alongside coursework from the second year arrives better prepared than one who starts after graduation.

You can compare options on our MBBS in Europe page and read the wider case in our MBBS abroad guide.

What if you fail FMGE in 2026?

Failing one session does not end the route. There is no cap on attempts, so a candidate can apply for the next session. FMGE now runs three times a year, which shortens the wait between attempts. Each scorecard shows the marks, so a candidate can see how far they were from 150. The scorecard stays available for six months only, so save a copy. A candidate who passes collects the pass certificate in person after identity and document checks, as the June 2026 result notice explains.

What should NEET 2026 students do now?

A NEET UG 2026 student weighing MBBS abroad does not need to rush. Keep Indian counselling options open through the MCC UG medical counselling portal and state counselling. Use our NEET hub for the Indian side. In parallel, shortlist foreign universities by their FMGE record and NMC compliance, not by fee alone.

Conclusion

The FMGE 2026 June result was the lowest in four years. About 12.8 per cent of candidates passed, against 23.94 per cent in December 2025. The pass mark did not move. For a family planning MBBS abroad, the lesson is practical: pick a university whose graduates pass FMGE, check that the course meets every NMC rule, and start Indian-syllabus study early. The next chance to sit the exam is 31 October 2026.
