Kyiv Medical University of UAFM 2026: Fees, FMGE, Status

Kyiv Medical University of UAFM, now officially Kyiv Medical University, is a private medical university in Kyiv, Ukraine, founded in 1992. It still admits international students in 2026. Its English-medium Medicine programme costs USD 4,000 a year. Ukraine remains under martial law, and India's embassy still advises its citizens to leave.

Updated on 30 September 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Same university, newer name. The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) is the global list of medical schools. It records the old name as Kyiv Medical Institute of the Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine, used from 1992 to 2009 (WDOMS entry F0002349).

  • Fees for 2026 to 2027. English-medium Medicine in Kyiv costs USD 4,000 a year. The full 5 years 10 months cost USD 24,000 (Kyiv Medical University tuition fees for foreign citizens 2026 to 2027).

  • FMGE results close to the Ukraine average. In the December 2025 FMGE, the screening exam foreign medical graduates sit to work in India, 18.18% of its graduates passed. Ukraine as a whole scored 21.48% (NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025).

  • War conditions are official. Martial law has applied in Ukraine since 24 February 2022, and Presidential Decree No. 596/2026 extended it again (Decree No. 596/2026 on the Verkhovna Rada legal database).

  • A campus in Poland adds an NMC question. The university runs a branch in Katowice, Poland. India's rules say no part of medical training may take place outside the country that awards the degree (NMC FMGL Regulations 2021).

  • Not a futureMBBS partner. futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in 9 European countries, and Ukraine is not one of them (futureMBBS partner universities).

What is Kyiv Medical University of UAFM?

Kyiv Medical University is a private university set up in 1992 by Valerii Pokanevych, a doctor who worked in folk and alternative medicine. The "UAFM" in the older name refers to the Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine. The university dropped that name in 2009, according to its WDOMS entry. Today it teaches mainstream medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

The university's history page lists three faculties: Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical. Teaching runs in 22 departments, 14 of them clinical. It opened a branch in Kharkiv in 2017 and another in Dnipro in 2019. Its Polish campus page puts the community at around 4,000 students and residents and 900 staff (KMU Polish Campus page).

For the wider picture of studying medicine in the country, see our guide to MBBS in Ukraine. It compares Kyiv Medical University with state universities such as O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University.

The Kyiv Medical University Medicine programme

The Medicine programme (specialty 222) leads to a Master of Medicine with the professional title Doctor of Medicine. It lasts 5 years 10 months, or 12 semesters, and carries 360 ECTS credits, the European unit of study load. It is taught full time in Ukrainian or English (Kyiv Medical University list of specialties). In India, this degree is treated as a foreign medical qualification, not an MBBS.

Is Kyiv Medical University open in 2026?

Yes. Kyiv Medical University is teaching and admitting students in 2026. On 29 September 2026 it announced an extra admission window from 28 September to 8 October 2026 for students entering through Ukraine's national test (university admissions notice). International applicants have a separate admission window running from 6 July to 1 November 2026 (admission requirements page).

Ukraine's current situation and the Indian embassy advisory

Ukraine has been under martial law since 24 February 2022. The latest extension, Presidential Decree No. 596/2026 of 13 July 2026, was approved by parliament on 25 July 2026 (Verkhovna Rada legal database).

The Embassy of India in Kyiv has not withdrawn its October 2022 guidance. Its most recent advisory, dated 25 October 2022, advises all Indian citizens in Ukraine to leave by available means (Embassy of India advisory, 25 October 2022). It remains the newest item on the embassy advisory page. A family weighing this university should read that advisory before anything else.

How Kyiv Medical University handles air raid alerts

The university has equipped shelters in the basements of its three main buildings: 2 Boryspilska Street, 121 Kharkivske Highway and its dental centre at 7 A. Tsedika Street. A state commission, including the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, inspects the shelters before each academic year. The shelters have classrooms, water, internet, phone charging and backup power (university shelter information).

During classes at hospitals, students use the hospital's shelter or a nearby public one. All students are trained on what to do when an air raid alert sounds.

Kyiv Medical University Polish Campus and the NMC rule

Kyiv Medical University runs a registered branch in Katowice, Poland, at 5 Zawiszy Czarnego Street. It says it moved part of its student and teaching community there after the full-scale invasion (KMU Polish Campus page). Foreign students pay EUR 6,000 a year for English-medium Medicine there, or EUR 36,000 in total (Polish Campus tuition fees 2026 to 2027).

For an Indian student this matters a great deal. The NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 say the entire course, training and internship must be done in the same foreign institution. They add that no part of it may be done in any country other than the one awarding the degree (NMC FMGL Regulations 2021). A Ukrainian degree with training in Poland does not match that wording.

Admission to the Polish campus is also limited. The university accepts only applicants who live in the EU or can enter it without a visa (admission requirements page). An Indian student applying from India would therefore apply to the Kyiv campus.

Kyiv Medical University fees for 2026 to 2027

Tuition for the 2026 to 2027 year rose 8.0% in line with Ukraine's 2025 inflation rate, under the university's Order No. 83 of 31 March 2026 (Kyiv Medical University payment page). Fees are paid in US dollars for Kyiv and in euros for the Polish campus.

Kyiv Medical University admission process for Indian students

The university lists three routes: in person in Kyiv, in person in Poland, or distance admission with a video-recorded entrance exam (admission requirements page). For the Kyiv route, the steps are:

  1. Apply for an electronic invitation letter through Ukraine's official Study in Ukraine application portal.

  2. Pass document validation. Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science checks your school documents before the invitation is issued. The university's admissions committee submits them.

  3. Take the written entrance test. It covers English or Ukrainian, plus Chemistry and Biology.

  4. Apply for a type D student visa at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate once the invitation letter arrives.

  5. Submit original documents on arrival. The university then issues the order of admission, which makes you a student.

Documents Kyiv Medical University asks for

  • School certificate with marks for all subjects, original and copy, translated into Ukrainian, notarised and legalised.

  • Passport, original and copies of the front page and the Ukrainian visa page, translated and notarised.

  • Medical insurance valid in Ukraine.

  • Twelve photographs, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, matte.

  • NEET UG result. The university's FAQ page lists it as a required document for Indian nationals.

Indian eligibility rules for studying medicine abroad, including the NEET requirement, are explained in our guide to eligibility for MBBS abroad.

Kyiv Medical University FMGE pass rate

FMGE is the screening exam that graduates of foreign medical schools must pass before they can work in India. It is run by NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS FMGE page). NBEMS lists this university as Kyiv Medical University Faculty of Medicine.

Put simply, roughly one in five graduates passed in each 2025 exam. The 2024 result was stronger, at about three in ten. Across all universities in Ukraine, 18.62% passed in June 2025 and 21.48% in December 2025. Nationally, 18.62% of all candidates passed in June 2025 and 23.94% in December 2025.

In December 2025 the university sat slightly below the Ukraine average and below the national average. See our FMGE pass rates for MBBS abroad and the FMGE pass rate country-wise web story for other countries.

NMC rules that apply to Kyiv Medical University graduates

To practise in India, a graduate of any foreign university must meet the NMC FMGL Regulations 2021. The main conditions are:

  • Course length of at least 54 months. The Kyiv Medical University Medicine programme of 5 years 10 months meets this.

  • Teaching in English. Only the English-medium Medicine programme fits; the Ukrainian-medium programme does not.

  • A 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, in addition to the course, with hands-on work in the listed clinical subjects.

  • All study in the awarding country. No part of training or internship may happen in India or in a third country.

  • A licence to practise in Ukraine, on the same terms as a Ukrainian citizen.

  • Finish within 10 years of joining the course.

  • Pass FMGE, then a 12-month supervised internship in India.

Our explainer on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition walks through each condition step by step.

Kyiv Medical University clinical training hospitals

Clinical teaching happens in Kyiv city hospitals. The university's training bases page lists these among its main sites:

  • Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 1 (121 Kharkivske Highway): obstetrics and gynaecology, and surgery.

  • Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 11 (6 Rohozivska Street): neurology, psychiatry and internal medicine.

  • Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Centre (69 Verkhovynna Street): oncology teaching within surgery.

  • Children's Clinical Hospital No. 5 (53 Akademika Vernadskoho Boulevard): paediatrics.

  • Kyiv City Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1 (121/3 Kharkivske Highway): infectious diseases and pulmonology.

Does futureMBBS place students at Kyiv Medical University?

No. futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in 9 countries: the Czech Republic (5), Hungary (4), Poland (3), Slovakia (3), Croatia (2), Latvia (2), Romania (2), Cyprus (1) and Lithuania (1). Ukraine is not among them (futureMBBS partner universities).

Families who like the idea of studying near Katowice can look at Polish medical universities that award Polish degrees. One example is the Medical University of Silesia, based in Katowice itself.

Conclusion: Kyiv Medical University of UAFM in 2026

Kyiv Medical University is a WDOMS-listed private university that is teaching and admitting students in 2026. Its English-medium Medicine fee is USD 4,000 a year, and its FMGE results sit close to the Ukraine average. Two facts weigh most for an Indian family. India's embassy still advises its citizens to leave Ukraine. And training at the Polish campus does not match NMC's single-country rule.
