Its graduates passed FMGE at 11.22% in December 2025. The Embassy of India in Kyiv still advises Indian citizens to leave Ukraine.
Updated on 1 October 2026.
Key Takeaways
New name. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine renamed Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy as Dnipro State Medical University on 16 March 2021 (DSMU history page).
FMGE results below the Ukraine average. DSMU graduates passed FMGE, India's screening exam for foreign medical graduates, at 11.22% in December 2025. All Ukraine graduates passed at 21.48% (NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025).
NEET UG is required. NMC, India's medical regulator, requires a NEET UG qualification before an Indian student joins a medical course abroad (NMC information desk for students going abroad).
Online study must be made up in person. Under NMC's 18 March 2026 notice, any online teaching must be made up by physical attendance at the same university (NMC public notice of 18 March 2026).
Embassy advice is unchanged. The latest Embassy of India advisory, dated 25 October 2022, asks all Indian citizens to leave Ukraine (Embassy of India advisory, 25 October 2022).
What is Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University called now?
Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University is the name many Indian families still search for. The official name today is Dnipro State Medical University, shortened to DSMU. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine changed the type and the name of Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy by order No. 473 of 16 March 2021 (DSMU history page). The Ukrainian government's Study in Ukraine portal lists it under the new name as a state university (Study in Ukraine entry for DSMU).
For the wider country picture, read our MBBS in Ukraine guide. This page covers Dnipro State Medical University only.
India's exam board still sees both names. In its FMGE reports, NBEMS lists "Dnipro State Medical University" and, separately, a handful of candidates under "Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy". Both refer to the same institution at different points in its history.

Courses at Dnipro State Medical University for Indian students
Most Indian students join Medicine, which Indian families call MBBS. At DSMU it is a six-year, full-time Master's programme worth 360 ECTS credits. The graduate receives a Master of Medicine and the professional qualification of Doctor (DSMU Medicine programme).
The Study in Ukraine portal lists these DSMU programmes for foreign students: Medicine, Medicine (Paediatrics), Dental Studies, Pharmacy, Therapy and Rehabilitation, Biology and Public Health (Study in Ukraine entry for DSMU). DSMU has four faculties: Medical; Medicine, Therapy and Rehabilitation; Dentistry and Pharmacy; and Postgraduate Education.
For NMC purposes, only the English-medium Medicine programme counts. NMC requires the whole course to be taught in English.

Who can apply to Dnipro State Medical University from India?
An Indian student must meet both DSMU's rules and NMC's rules. DSMU's admission rules for foreign applicants set these conditions (DSMU admission rules for foreigners):
School marks. An average of at least 150 on DSMU's 200-point scale, worked out from the school leaving certificate.
Entrance tests. Medicine applicants are tested in Biology and in the language of study. The minimum pass mark is 150 out of 200 in each.
Language test waiver. A valid B2 certificate from TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge English replaces the language test and counts as the top mark of 200.
On the Indian side, NEET UG must be qualified before joining. NMC says a NEET result stays valid for three years from the date it is declared (NMC information desk for students going abroad). Our page on whether NEET is required for MBBS abroad explains the rule in full.

What NMC rules would a Dnipro State Medical University student have to meet?
Students who join a foreign medical course now follow the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 (NMC FMGL Regulations 2021). Our guide on which NMC rules apply to you explains them in full.
FMGL rule | What it means at DSMU |
|---|---|
Course of at least 54 months | The six-year Medicine programme meets the length rule |
12-month internship at the same foreign university | The internship must also be done at DSMU |
Teaching in English | Only the English-medium Medicine programme can count |
Whole course at the same institution, outside India | No part of the training can be done in India or in a third country |
Licence to practise in Ukraine | The graduate must be registered to practise in Ukraine, on par with a Ukrainian citizen |
Finish within ten years of joining | The whole course must be completed within ten years |
FMGE, then 12-month supervised internship in India | Both come after graduation, before full registration in India |
To check any foreign university against these rules, read how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition.
NMC online study rule for Dnipro State Medical University students
Online teaching is part of recent DSMU life. In May 2025, 58 English-medium and 22 French-medium foreign Medicine graduates sat the OSCE, a practical clinical exam. DSMU reported that graduates outside Ukraine took it online (DSMU news, 30 May 2025). In July 2026 DSMU held its diploma ceremony for foreign graduates, including graduates from India, in a mixed in-person and online format (DSMU news, 5 July 2026).
This matters for registration in India. On 18 March 2026, NMC set out how online study counts for foreign medical graduates (NMC public notice of 18 March 2026). Our web story on the NMC online classes rule gives the short version.
Online time must be made up in person. Any theory, practical or internship period taught online must be compensated by physical attendance at the parent foreign university.
The university must arrange it. This can be through extra classes or a longer course.
A compensatory certificate is needed. The graduate shows a certificate from the university, with transcripts, confirming the online part was made up in person.
Otherwise, clerkship in India. A graduate who did not make up the online time must complete one or two years of supervised hospital training in India.
State Medical Councils check before registration. They check the FMGE pass and the compensation, including passport entry and exit stamps.
What happened to Indian students at Dnipro State Medical University after 2022?
Indian students in Ukraine, including those in Dnipro, were brought home under Operation Ganga between 26 February and 11 March 2022 (NMC public notice of 7 December 2023). NMC then issued one-time measures for these students.
Date | NMC decision | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
6 and 15 September 2022 | Academic Mobility Programme: students could study for a time at universities in 29 listed countries, with the Ukrainian university still awarding the degree | Indian students studying in Ukraine |
7 December 2023 | Mobility extended as a one-time measure | Students who joined before 18 November 2021 |
7 December 2023 | Permission to transfer to another country except India, which expired on 7 March 2024 | Students who joined on or after 18 November 2021 and were in year 1, 2 or 3 |
7 December 2023 | One or two years of clinical clerkship in India for students who finished online | Final-year and penultimate-year students |

Is it safe to study at Dnipro State Medical University in 2026?
The Embassy of India in Kyiv has not changed its advice since October 2022. Its advisory of 25 October 2022 asks all Indian citizens in Ukraine to leave immediately by available means (Embassy of India advisory, 25 October 2022). It is still the newest advisory on the Embassy of India advisory page.
Dnipro is in central-eastern Ukraine, closer to the front line than western cities such as Lviv or Ternopil. A family should read the embassy advisory before any other step towards Dnipro State Medical University.

Ukraine is not among them (futureMBBS partner universities). For one example, see our page on MBBS in Poland.

Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University, now Dnipro State Medical University, has trained doctors since 1916. It teaches Medicine in English over six years and admits foreign students twice a year after entrance tests in Biology and language.
