Is Madras Medical College Chennai recognised by NMC?
Yes. The NMC list of colleges teaching MBBS records Madras Medical College Chennai as a government college under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, started in 1835. The NMC entry says the college is recognised for 165 seats. It is also recognised for the increase from 165 to 250 seats for degrees granted from February 2018. Annual renewal for 250 MBBS seats is recorded for 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Recognition decides what the degree is worth. An MBBS from an NMC-recognised college lets a graduate register with a State Medical Council and practise in India. It also allows entry to NEET PG for postgraduate training. Families can check any college on the NMC college and course search page.

How many MBBS seats does Madras Medical College Chennai have?
Madras Medical College Chennai admits 250 MBBS students a year. Annexure III of the Tamil Nadu MBBS and BDS prospectus 2026-27 splits them into two pools. The All India Quota (AIQ) is the 15% share of seats open to students from every state. The state quota is the 85% share kept for Tamil Nadu students.
Seat pool | Seats | Who fills it | Who can apply |
|---|---|---|---|
All India Quota (15%) | 38 | Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) | Any NEET UG qualified student in India |
Tamil Nadu state quota (85%) | 212 | Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee | Native students of Tamil Nadu, and a few others listed below |
Total | 250 | Both bodies | Not applicable |
Within the 212 state seats, some are set aside first. Annexure IV of the prospectus earmarks 11 seats at Madras Medical College for persons with benchmark disabilities and 1 for an eminent sports person. A further 7.5% of state government seats go to students who studied from Class 6 to Class 12 in Tamil Nadu government schools. In 2026, 16 Madras Medical College seats were held under this 7.5% quota after Round 2. Our web story on All India Quota vs state quota seats explains the split in one minute.
Madras Medical College Chennai NEET cutoff 2026: state quota
The Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee publishes the full list of students allotted to each college. We read the Round 1 allotment list of 27 August 2026 and the Round 2 allotment list of 15 September 2026. From them we picked out every general category student placed at Madras Medical College. The table shows the lowest NEET score and the highest state merit rank admitted, by community.
Community | After Round 1: lowest NEET score (state rank) | After Round 2: lowest NEET score (state rank) |
|---|---|---|
OC (Open Competition) | 661 (70) | 639 (200) |
BC (Backward Class) | 644 (157) | 633 (258) |
BCM (Backward Class Muslim) | 634 (254) | 624 (349) |
MBC and DNC (Most Backward Class) | 632 (267) | 627 (317) |
SC (Scheduled Caste) | 587 (1,038) | 580 (1,258) |
SCA (Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar) | 564 (1,880) | 549 (2,604) |
ST (Scheduled Tribe) | 650 (119) | 568 (1,680) |
The state rank is the rank in the Tamil Nadu government quota merit list, not the NEET All India Rank. Scores are out of 720. In plain terms, an OC student needed about 640 or more to be placed at Madras Medical College after two rounds. Only one ST student was placed in each round, so that row moves a lot.
Madras Medical College closes higher than any other Tamil Nadu government college. At Stanley Medical College Chennai, the OC figure after Round 2 was 625.
The 7.5% government school quota works on its own merit list. In the Round 2 list for this quota, the 16 students at Madras Medical College scored from 599 down to 541.

Madras Medical College Chennai NEET cutoff: All India Quota 2025 and 2026
For the 38 AIQ seats, the NEET All India Rank decides everything. The table shows the highest rank that received a Madras Medical College seat in each MCC round. The figures come from the official MCC results for 2025 Round 1, 2025 Round 2, 2026 Round 1 (revised) and 2026 Round 2.
Category | 2025 R1 | 2025 R2 | 2026 R1 | 2026 R2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Open | 695 | 1,296 | 672 | 1,426 |
OBC | 920 | 1,324 | 1,007 | 2,165 |
EWS | 3,168 | 3,615 | 4,206 | 4,705 |
SC | 6,518 | No new seat | 4,398 | No new seat |
ST | 50,544 | 52,428 | 21,077 | 24,304 |
Two things stand out. First, the seats fill early. In 2025, the revised Round 3 result placed only one new student at the college, an EWS student at rank 6,861, and no seat was left for the stray vacancy round. Second, 2026 is tracking close to 2025. Round 2 closed at 1,426 for Open, against 1,296 a year earlier.
The MCC clear vacancy list for Round 3 shows 3 AIQ seats open at Madras Medical College: 1 Open, 1 OBC and 1 EWS. Our NEET cutoffs page and the futureMBBS College Predictor help you test your own rank against these figures.

Leaving after the Round 2 deadline: You forfeit the tuition fee and must pay a discontinuation fee of Rs. 10 lakh to the Secretary, Selection Committee, Kilpauk, Chennai.
