History
Introduction
Madras Medical College, or MMC, is one of the most popular government medical colleges in India. It has 250 MBBS seats, located in the midst of Chennai's main medical district, and has been around since 1835. Students don't pick MMC just because of its name. They chose it because it has a strong clinical background, a government-fee system, a tough academic atmosphere, and hospital exposure that starts to shape medical judgment early on.
The clinical setting is what really sets MMC apart. The college is part of a large public medical system that sees a lot of patients in general medicine, surgery, women's health, child health, rehabilitation, mental health, thoracic medicine, and tertiary care. The bigger MMC system has 10,592 beds and sees over 38.9 lakh outpatient visits each year. That kind of scale gives MBBS students a lot more than just what they study in class. It places them in a real-life referral-level teaching setting where medicine seems real, different, and important from the outset.

The pre-clinical phase builds the scientific base needed for later medical training. At Madras Medical College, this stage broadly covers the core first-phase MBBS subjects:
1.5 Years
After that, students move into the para-clinical stage, where the focus shifts toward disease mechanisms, drugs, laboratory understanding, medico-legal concepts, and community-based health learning. This generally includes:
2 Years
The clinical side of Madras Medical College is one of its biggest strengths, with training across the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and associated institutes. Students generally rotate through major clinical departments such as:
Once the academic phase of MBBS is completed, students move into a 12-month compulsory rotating internship, where training becomes much more hands-on. This is the phase in which students work more closely in wards, outpatient units, emergency settings, and major clinical departments, while also learning case documentation, routine patient care responsibilities, and practical hospital workflows. The internship breakup commonly followed is broadly along these lines, though the exact posting pattern can vary slightly by institution and university schedule:

How to Apply
MMC admits students to MBBS through NEET-UG. The college does not conduct a separate entrance exam. Students applying under the Tamil Nadu government quota need to register through the Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee. Students applying under the All India Quota go through MCC counselling. In practical terms, that means aspirants need to track both counselling systems carefully, depending on the quota they fall under.
To apply for MBBS at MMC, a student must pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English as individual subjects.
Subjects:
The qualifying marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together must meet the category-wise minimum set for medical admission.
| Category | Min. % |
|---|---|
| General / EWS | 50% |
| OBC / SC / ST | 40% |
| PwBD | 45% |
Candidates must meet the minimum age requirement for MBBS admission (at least 17 years by 31 December of the admission year).
The student must qualify NEET-UG in the relevant admission year.

Affordable education
The MBBS fee at Madras Medical College is much lower than what students usually see at private medical colleges. Even then, tuition is only one part of the picture. Hostel charges, mess, books, and everyday expenses add to the overall cost, so it helps to look at the full yearly spend instead of the tuition figure alone.
| Cost Component | Approximate Amount |
|---|---|
| MBBS Tuition Fee – Full | Approx. ₹90,000 for the full course |
| Accommodation | Approx. ₹12,000 per year for basic hostel dues; overall hostel-related outgo can go higher depending on hostel allotment and inclusions |

MBBS Tuition Fee (Full)

World-Class Campus
Madras Medical College is built around a large government teaching-hospital system in Chennai, so students are trained in a much wider clinical setup than a small standalone campus.

The attached hospital network includes Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Government Hospital for Women and Children, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Institute of Mental Health, Government Peripheral Hospital, Periyar Nagar, and the Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, K.K. Nagar.
History
The history of Madras Medical College goes back to 1835, when the private medical hall run by Dr. William Mortimer was regularised as the Madras Medical School and attached to the General Hospital in Madras. That early shift mattered because it moved medical training from a smaller teaching setup into a state-backed institutional framework.
In 1850, the school was formally upgraded and became Madras Medical College. The first batch graduated in 1852, and the college later came under the University of Madras in 1857. Tamil Nadu government records describe MMC as the oldest medical college in India, which gives some context to the scale of its legacy today.
Over time, MMC grew far beyond its early college structure and became part of a much larger government teaching-hospital network in Chennai. Its long institutional history is closely tied to the Government General Hospital system and, over the years, to other major teaching hospitals and specialty institutes attached to it.
That is a big part of why MMC still carries weight today. Its reputation is not built only on recent visibility. It comes from nearly two centuries of medical education, hospital training, and public healthcare linkage in Tamil Nadu.

Housing
Madras Medical College does offer hostel accommodation for students, and the hostel system is fairly large.
The hostel setup includes facilities such as RO drinking water, mess arrangements, study or reading spaces, TV halls, gym access in some hostels, parking in some blocks, and anti-ragging supervision/security arrangements.
The Main Ladies Hostel has 243 rooms across six floors, with MBBS students typically accommodating three to a room.
The MMC Men's Hostel has 322 rooms across the front, rear, and transient blocks.
There is also a Ladies Hostel at Egmore with 77 rooms, along with a separate PG Men's Hostel with four blocks accommodating 179 students.
Students should still confirm the latest hostel allotment, room availability, and current charges at the time of admission, since these practical details can change.

Scholarship & Financial
At Madras Medical College, the fee burden is already much lower than what students usually see at private medical colleges. Even then, scholarship support can still matter a lot, especially for students who need help with tuition, compulsory academic charges, or basic study-related expenses during the course. The main thing to understand is that scholarship support at MMC does not usually come through one single college-only route. In most cases, students need to look at Tamil Nadu government schemes and central scholarship schemes based on their category, income level, and eligibility conditions.
For BC, MBC, and DNC students, Tamil Nadu has free-education support routes that extend to professional degree courses as well. In the professional-degree category, the income ceiling is shown at ₹50,000 per year for the family, and the support generally covers tuition fees, examination fees, special fees, and other compulsory charges, up to around ₹10,000.
Students from Adi Dravidar backgrounds also have post-matric scholarship routes for studies beyond Class 10, including higher education, with an annual income ceiling placed at up to ₹2.5 lakh. For Scheduled Tribe students, there is a separate post-matric scholarship route after Standard X, usually including maintenance allowance along with compulsory academic fees, with the income ceiling placed at ₹2.5 lakh under the applicable Government of India route.
Some students may also need to apply through the National Scholarship Portal if they are eligible for central schemes. From AY 2024–25 onward, this process requires One Time Registration, or OTR. That registration is linked to Aadhaar or Aadhaar Enrolment ID and stays valid across the student's academic journey on the portal.
Students should keep their Aadhaar details, college and course details, mobile number, and relevant income or category certificates ready before applying.
SC and ST post-matric scholarship applications in Tamil Nadu generally move through TNSSP, while central scholarship schemes move through NSP, where One Time Registration (OTR) is required from AY 2024–25 onward.
Since scholarship dates, rules, and verification steps can change, students should check the current portal instructions during admission season instead of relying on older timelines.
