Two things stand out. First, the closing rank moves a long way after Round 1. In 2025 the Open closing rank rose from 1,258 in Round 1 to 6,781 in Round 3, because many Round 1 students left for other colleges. Second, 2026 is tracking close to 2025 so far. Round 2 closed at 4,308 for Open, against 4,677 a year earlier.

The Tamil Nadu prospectus 2026-27 sets these conditions for government quota seats:
Nativity: You must be a native of Tamil Nadu and upload a nativity certificate issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu. A permanent residence certificate is not accepted instead.
Students of other states: A native of another state who studied Class 6 to Class 12 continuously in Tamil Nadu can apply, but only under the Open Competition category.
Age: You must be 17 years old on or before 31 December 2026.
Class 12 marks: You need passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together. The minimum is 40% for SC, ST and OBC students, and 45% for general category students with benchmark disabilities.
NEET percentile: The minimum is the 50th percentile, or the 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC students.
Other boards: Students from boards other than the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE and ISCE must upload an eligibility certificate from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

What if you do not join or you leave Stanley after allotment?
Tamil Nadu has strict rules once Round 2 is over. These come from the prospectus and apply to state quota seats.
Round 1 and Round 2: Not joining, or resigning before the set date, counts as a free exit. You lose nothing.
Round 3 and the stray round: Paying the fee and downloading the allotment order counts as joining. If you are allotted and do not download the order, you are barred from later rounds and from next year's Tamil Nadu counselling.
Leaving after the Round 2 deadline: You forfeit the tuition fee and must pay a discontinuation fee of Rs. 10 lakh to the Secretary, Selection Committee, Kilpauk, Chennai.
False documents: A forged certificate cancels the seat at any stage and bars the student from Tamil Nadu counselling for three years.

Fees are charged only for the 4.5 academic years, not the internship year. This follows the NMC public notice of 7 April 2026 on MBBS fee duration. At Rs. 18,073 a year, tuition and college fees come to about Rs. 81,000 for the whole course. Hostel, mess and books are extra and are not part of this fee.

Documents required for Stanley Medical College Chennai admission

Class 10, 11 and 12 mark sheets: Both sides of each certificate.

Government school bonafide certificate: For the 7.5% quota. Students who finished Class 12 in 2022-23 or later are verified through the EMIS portal instead.
Special category forms: For disability, sports and ex-servicemen claims, with the certificates each one needs.
At reporting, you must show every original. The prospectus also requires Hepatitis B vaccination before admission.
Hospital and clinical training at Stanley Medical College Chennai
Students train at the college's own teaching hospital on the same campus. In its NIRF 2026 data submission, the college reported 1,661 hospital beds and an average of 5,415 outpatients a day in 2022. On an average day, about 1,362 beds were occupied. In plain terms, a student sees a very large number of patients from the first clinical posting.
The college lists three associated institutions used for training:
RSRM Lying-in Hospital, Royapuram: Used for obstetrics and gynaecology training.
Peripheral Hospital, Tondiarpet: An additional government hospital in north Chennai.
Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram: Used for chest and tuberculosis medicine.
The same NIRF submission shows 1,248 undergraduate students on roll, 640 MD and MS students, and 52 super speciality (DM and MCh) graduates in 2024-25. The college's ladies hostel page lists undergraduate rooms with space for 657 students across three blocks, with separate blocks for postgraduates and interns.
For the 2026 batch, the Directorate of Medical Education circular of 7 September 2026 set first-year classes to begin on 15 September 2026. A foundation course ran from 16 to 29 September, and the core curriculum starts on 30 September 2026. Students who join in Round 3 will start after these dates.

A student who studies abroad must follow the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021. The course must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, and include a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution. The graduate must then pass FMGE, the screening exam conducted by NBEMS, and complete 12 months of supervised internship in India. In the December 2025 FMGE exam, 10,264 of 42,868 candidates passed, a pass rate of 23.94%, or roughly one in four.
