Yerevan Haybusak University MBBS: FMGE and NMC Rules

Yerevan Haybusak University is a private university in Yerevan, Armenia, founded in 1991, whose Institute of Medicine teaches General Medicine to Indian students. In the FMGE December 2025 exam, 17.51% of its graduates passed (66 of 377). Its institutional accreditation, granted in June 2023, ran until 29 June 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Founded in 1991, medicine-heavy: in 2022/23 the university had 2,105 students, and 1,830 of them studied in the Institute of Medicine, according to the 2023 accreditation report.

  • FMGE pass rate of 17.51% in December 2025: 66 of 377 graduates passed, roughly one in six. That is above the Armenia average of 14.23% but below the national figure of 23.94% (NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025).

  • Accreditation with conditions: the Estonian Quality Agency for Education (HAKA) accredited the university for three years with a condition. The ANQA State Accreditation Register entry shows it valid from 29 June 2023 to 29 June 2026.

  • NMC rules decide whether the degree counts in India: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, English medium, and a licence to practise in Armenia (NMC FMGL Regulations 2021).

  • NEET UG is compulsory: Indian students who go abroad for MBBS on or after May 2018 must qualify NEET UG, as set out in the NMC FAQs on the Screening Test Regulations.

Is Yerevan Haybusak University valid for NMC and Indian students?

The National Medical Commission (NMC), India's medical regulator, does not approve foreign universities one by one. Instead, the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 set conditions every student must meet. A Yerevan Haybusak University degree counts in India only if all of them are met.

  • Course length: the medical course must last at least 54 months.

  • Internship abroad: a 12-month internship must be done at the same foreign university, after the course.

  • English medium: the degree must be taught in English.

  • Subjects: the course must cover the subjects listed in Schedule I of the regulations, equivalent to the Indian MBBS.

  • Licence in Armenia: the graduate must be registered, or eligible to be licensed, to practise medicine in Armenia on the same terms as Armenian citizens.

  • Whole course in one place: no part of the course or internship can be done in India or a third country.

  • Ten-year limit: the course must be finished within ten years of joining.

  • Back in India: a 12-month supervised internship in India and a pass in the licensing exam set by the NMC. Today that exam is the FMGE.

Our guide on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition explains each check in more detail. If you joined a course abroad before 18 November 2021, older rules apply, explained in which NMC rules apply to you.

What the FMGE results mean for your family

A pass rate near 18% means about four in five graduates did not pass that exam. Many sit it again, so the share who pass in the end is higher. Still, a student who chooses Yerevan Haybusak University should plan for serious FMGE preparation from the clinical years, not only after graduation.

Who can apply to Yerevan Haybusak University from India?

An Indian student can join the General Medicine programme and keep the right to practise in India only if the student has qualified NEET UG. The NMC FAQs on the Screening Test Regulations state that NEET UG is compulsory for anyone starting a foreign medical degree on or after May 2018. The NEET result works as the eligibility certificate. The student must also meet the MBBS eligibility rules in India's Graduate Medical Education Regulations.

Who should not join Yerevan Haybusak University

  • Students without a NEET UG qualifying score: without it, the degree cannot lead to registration in India.

  • Students who need a course shorter than 54 months: NMC rules reject any shorter course, so a fast-track offer is a risk.

  • Students offered internship in India or another country: NMC rules require the full internship at the same university in Armenia.

What to check before taking admission at Yerevan Haybusak University

Each check below comes from the NMC rules or the ANQA register. Ask for each one in writing.

  1. Current accreditation: ask for the institutional accreditation certificate valid after 29 June 2026, and match it to the ANQA register.

  2. Course length and internship: the admission letter should show at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at Yerevan Haybusak University.

  3. Medium of teaching: the admission letter and later the degree should state English as the medium of instruction.

  4. Licence in Armenia: ask how graduates register to practise in Armenia, since NMC requires this.

  5. Fees in writing: ask for an itemised fee letter showing tuition per year, hostel and insurance, in US dollars.

  6. NEET UG scorecard: keep the scorecard safe. It is needed again when you apply for the FMGE and NMC registration.

Conclusion: is Yerevan Haybusak University a good choice for MBBS?

Yerevan Haybusak University is an established medical university in Yerevan with a large Indian intake. Its FMGE pass rate, at 17.51% in December 2025, is above the Armenia average but below the best in the country. The real question in 2026 is accreditation. The last decision ran until 29 June 2026, so a family should see a current certificate before committing.
