FMGE January 2027: Date Withdrawn, What NBEMS Confirmed

14 Oct 2026

11 min read

FMGE January 2027 no longer has a confirmed date. NBEMS scheduled the exam for 9 January 2027, then withdrew that date in August 2026 and moved it to January or February. This covers what the notices say, the shift to three computer-based sittings a year, and who can apply.

FMGE January 2027: Date Withdrawn, What NBEMS Confirmed

The FMGE January 2027 sitting no longer has a confirmed date. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences had scheduled it for 9 January 2027, then cancelled that date in a notice dated 28 August 2026 and said the exam moves to a later date in January or February 2027.

FMGE January 2027: key takeaways

  • The 9 January 2027 date is withdrawn. NBEMS stated in writing that the exam earlier scheduled for 9 January 2027 will be rescheduled to a later date in January or February 2027.

  • FMGE now runs three times a year, not twice. NBEMS took that decision in the same notice, which is why an extra sitting appeared on 31 October 2026.

  • The exam is computer-based. NBEMS conducts it through a computer-based platform at examination centres across the country.

  • No information bulletin has been published yet for the rescheduled sitting. The bulletin is what fixes the exam date, the application window and the fee, and NBEMS said it will appear in due course.

  • Nothing about eligibility has changed. The screening test still runs under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002, and the rules for who may sit it are unchanged.

  • Anything telling you the date is fixed is out of date. Pages still naming 9 January 2027 were written before the August notice and have not been corrected.

What exactly did NBEMS say?

Two notices matter, and reading them in order explains the confusion.

On 29 April 2026 NBEMS published an updated tentative schedule of forthcoming examinations. It listed a sitting called FMGE December 2026 with a tentative exam date of 9 January 2027, a Saturday. That same notice carried a warning most readers skipped: the schedule was "purely tentative" and the exact dates would be set in the information bulletin.

On 28 August 2026 NBEMS published a notice headed Conduct of Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)-regarding. It did three things. It recorded the decision to hold FMGE three times every year instead of twice, through a computer-based platform. It scheduled an additional sitting on 31 October 2026. And it stated that the FMGE earlier scheduled for 9 January 2027 would be rescheduled to a later date in January or February 2027, with details to be notified in due course.

That is the current position on FMGE January 2027. The NBEMS notices page carries no notice naming a 2027 FMGE date as this is written.

Why did the FMGE January 2027 date move?

The notice gives no reason, but it gives the context. The board had just decided to add a third sitting each year and had slotted an extra exam into 31 October 2026. Moving the next sitting back into late January or February spaces the calendar out.

The practical effect for a candidate is the useful part. After the August 2026 decision, going from two sittings to three is a 50% increase in the number of chances you get in a year, and it shortens the wait after a failed attempt from roughly six months to roughly four.

Who can sit the FMGE?

The eligibility rules come from NBEMS and have not changed with the reschedule. To apply you must meet all of the following:

  • Be an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India. The screening test exists for graduates of foreign medical schools seeking registration in India.

  • Hold a primary medical qualification confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned as a recognised qualification for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country where the awarding institution sits.

  • Have your final examination result declared on or before the cut-off date prescribed for that particular session of the exam.

  • Hold the Eligibility Certificate, where one applies to you, issued before you went abroad.

  • Hold the Provisional Pass Certificate or Degree Certificate of the primary medical qualification. NBEMS states that only candidates holding both documents are allowed to appear.

The last two conditions are the ones that catch people. A result that is declared after the cut-off date pushes you to the next sitting, and that is now a shorter wait than it used to be. Our full explainer on what the FMGE exam is covers the pattern and the registration process in more depth.

What rules does the FMGE run under?

The screening test was introduced through the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. Under those regulations, an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India holding a primary medical qualification from outside India, who wants provisional or permanent registration with a medical council on or after 15 March 2002, has to qualify in a screening test.

NBEMS has been entrusted with conducting that test. Its role is deliberately narrow: it conducts the exam, publishes the result, and hands the result to the National Medical Commission and all State Medical Councils. Registration itself is done by the council, not by NBEMS.

Separately, graduates who went abroad after the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 came into force must also meet those conditions: a course of at least 54 months, a 12 month internship in the same foreign institution, English as the medium of instruction, the Schedule I subjects, registration with the regulator in that country, and a further 12 month supervised internship in India after returning. Our guide to which NMC rules apply to you sorts out which set governs your batch.

What to do while the FMGE January 2027 date is unconfirmed

  1. Take the date from the NBEMS notices page only. It will appear there first, inside an information bulletin, before it appears anywhere else.

  2. Get your documents in order now. The Eligibility Certificate, the Provisional Pass Certificate or degree certificate, and your passport are what the application needs, and chasing a university for paperwork takes longer than the application window.

  3. Check that your medical school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. It is the international directory regulators use to confirm a school exists and is recognised in its own country.

  4. Plan your revision against a February date, not a January one. If the exam lands in late January you lose nothing by being ready early. If you plan for 9 January you will have planned against a date that does not exist.

  5. Keep your biometric and photograph requirements in mind. NBEMS issues the pass certificate only after in-person verification of the biometric or Face ID captured during the exam, alongside the prescribed documents.

  6. Do not book travel against an unconfirmed date. The bulletin sets the exam city process, and candidates who book early routinely lose money when a date shifts.

A later date in January or February 2027

Three sittings a year is the new normal rather than a one-off. Spread evenly across 2027, it cuts the typical wait after a failed attempt by about 33%, from roughly six months to roughly four. If you are sitting the 31 October 2026 exam, our post on the FMGE October 2026 dates and admit card covers that session, and the exam day checklist covers what to carry.

Does the National Exit Test change any of this?

No. The National Exit Test, usually written as NExT, has been deferred and is not in force. The FMGE remains the exam a foreign medical graduate sits before they can register and work in India. Our note on what the NMC rules currently say about FMGE and NExT is kept current, and the three sittings a year explainer covers the frequency change.

Who cannot sit the FMGE January 2027 exam?

  • Anyone whose final result is declared after the session cut-off. The cut-off date is set in the bulletin for each sitting, so a late result moves you to the next one.

  • Anyone without the Eligibility Certificate where it applies. It is issued before you leave, not afterwards, and it cannot be obtained retrospectively.

  • Anyone holding only a transcript or a provisional letter. NBEMS asks for the Provisional Pass Certificate or the degree certificate itself.

  • Graduates of institutions not recognised for practice in their own country. The qualification must be confirmed by the Indian Embassy as recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner there.

What comes after you pass the FMGE January 2027 exam?

Passing the screening test is not the end of the paperwork. NBEMS issues the Screening Test Pass Certificate after in-person verification, then the result goes to the National Medical Commission and the State Medical Councils. You then complete the supervised internship in India and apply for registration with a state council.

Our guide to the FMG internship and registration sets out that sequence, and how to check the FMGE result covers the step before it. If you are still preparing, the FMGE syllabus breakdown shows where the marks sit, and our analysis of the 2026 pass rates sets a realistic target.

FMGE January 2027: the short answer

The honest summary of the FMGE January 2027 position is that there is no date. NBEMS withdrew 9 January 2027 in August and has not replaced it, beyond saying the exam will fall later in January or February. The useful news underneath that is the move to three sittings a year on a computer-based platform, which shortens the gap between attempts. Prepare for a February date, keep your documents ready, and take the date from the NBEMS bulletin rather than from a page that has not been updated since the spring.
