Cost of MBBS in India 2026: Government, Private, Deemed

The cost of MBBS in India in 2026 runs from about Rs. 6,000 for the whole course at AIIMS New Delhi to more than Rs. 1.3 crore in tuition at some deemed universities. Your seat type decides the bill, not the degree. A government seat costs thousands, a private or deemed seat costs lakhs every year.

What decides the cost of MBBS in India?

The MBBS course is the same everywhere in India. It lasts 5.5 years: 4.5 years of study and a 1-year compulsory internship. What changes the price is who owns the college and which quota your seat falls under.

  • Who owns the college. Central and state government colleges are paid for by the government, so fees are low. Private (self-financing) colleges and deemed universities fund themselves through fees.

  • Which quota you are admitted under. A private college may have government quota, management quota and NRI quota seats. Each has its own fee, even in the same class.

  • Who sets the fee. For state and private college seats, a state fee committee fixes the fee. Tamil Nadu uses the Committee on Fixation of Fee for self-financing colleges (Tamil Nadu prospectus, clause 22). Deemed universities publish their own fee schedules.

Your NEET rank decides which of these seats you can reach. Read how seats split between the national and state pools in our web story on All India Quota vs State Quota seats. For seat numbers, see MBBS seats in India 2026.

Deemed university MBBS fees in India

NMC rule 2026: MBBS fees only for 4.5 years

On 7 April 2026, the NMC issued a public notice on MBBS fee duration. It found some colleges were charging fees for 5 or 5.5 years. The notice directs all colleges to charge MBBS fees only for the 4.5 years of academic study (NMC public notice CDN-13011/1/2026).

  • What it means for families. No tuition should be charged for the 1-year compulsory rotating internship.

  • How states apply it. Tamil Nadu passed the notice to all self-financing colleges on 8 April 2026. It told them not to collect any fee beyond what the fee committee fixed (Tamil Nadu Notification 002, 23 June 2026).

  • How to check a fee schedule. Count the instalments. A schedule should cover 4.5 years of tuition. D. Y. Patil Pune, for example, states that its course fee applies for four and a half years (D. Y. Patil fee structure).

The course timeline is explained in our guide to MBBS course duration in India.

MBBS counselling fees and security deposits in India

Before you pay any college, you pay counselling fees. Part of this is a refundable security deposit. It is lost if you take a seat in a later round and do not join (MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026 information bulletin). Our NEET counselling hub explains each round.

What if you leave an MBBS seat after paying?

  • MCC seats. If you are allotted a seat in Round 2 or later and do not join, the security deposit is forfeited (MCC 2026 bulletin).

  • Tamil Nadu seats. Leaving after the Round 2 resignation date, or not joining a Round 3 or stray round seat, costs a Rs. 10 lakh discontinuation fee. You also lose the security deposit and the tuition fee paid (Tamil Nadu prospectus, clause 23).

  • Tuition refunds. In Tamil Nadu, tuition paid at allotment is refunded only if you do not join or resign in Round 1 or Round 2 before the set date.

MBBS fee concessions in India

Tamil Nadu SC, SCA, ST and SC-converted Christian candidates whose parents earn under Rs. 2.5 lakh a year do not pay tuition upfront. This applies to government quota and management quota seats in private colleges. Colleges claim the fee from the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme instead. On 25 September 2026, the selection committee told colleges not to demand upfront fees from these students (Tamil Nadu Notification 30, 25 September 2026).

Other states run their own schemes. Our list of scholarships for MBBS students in India covers the main ones.

How to find the official MBBS fee for any college

  1. For All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER and deemed seats, open the College Information section on the MCC website. MCC collects fee, bond and stipend details there from each college.

  2. For state quota and private seats, open your state counselling prospectus. The fee table is usually in the fee structure clause.

  3. Open the college's own fee document for hostel, mess and other charges.

  4. Check that tuition covers 4.5 years, in line with the NMC notice of 7 April 2026.

Our NEET college predictor shows which colleges your rank can reach, so you can check fees only for realistic options.

Is MBBS abroad cheaper than a private MBBS seat in India?

For many families, the real comparison is a management or deemed seat in India against a medical degree abroad. futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in 9 countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Latvia, Romania, Cyprus and Lithuania. Six-year totals by country are in our cost of MBBS in Europe guide. For a side-by-side view, read MBBS in India vs MBBS abroad in 2026 or see our web story on MBBS fees in India.

Conclusion: the cost of MBBS in India depends on your seat

A government seat costs a few thousand rupees a year. A private seat costs Rs. 4 to 16 lakh a year in tuition, depending on quota. A deemed seat can pass Rs. 1 crore. Before you lock choices, read the official fee table, add hostel and other charges, and multiply tuition by 4.5 years.
