How to Apply
Admission to General Medicine at YSMU runs through Armenia's national admissions portal (fs.emis.am) and the university's International Students' Department, often with help from YSMU's authorised representatives in India. Applicants sit YSMU's own entrance test in two science subjects, and Indian students must have qualified NEET before enrolling.
The application window for the September intake opens on the national portal fs.emis.am; the 2025 window ran 23 June – 30 September.
Indian applicants must have qualified NEET-UG; YSMU states admission is not permitted for Indian students without NEET qualification.
Indicative deadline based on the 2025 cycle; confirm the exact 2026 date with the YSMU International Students' Department.
Applicants sit YSMU's entrance examination in two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (50 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, pass mark 26/50); those who do not pass may join the one-year Preparatory Department.
Admitted students sign a study contract, arrange mandatory medical insurance, and obtain their Armenian student visa/residence permit.
The academic year begins in Yerevan.
Applicants need to have completed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. For Indian students, the NMC requires a minimum aggregate of 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (40% for reserved categories) together with English, plus a valid NEET qualification, to be eligible for licensing in India later.

Candidates should be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year, in line with NMC rules for studying medicine abroad.
Applicants apply through the national portal and the YSMU International Students' Department, sit the entrance test, and Indian students must hold a valid NEET result. Applications may be made directly or through YSMU's authorised Indian representatives.

A 60-minute, 50-question multiple-choice test in two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (pass mark 26/50); a one-year Preparatory Department is available for those who do not pass.
NEET (India)
NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian applicants, both for YSMU enrolment and for future licensing in India through the NMC.
Admission is based on YSMU's own two-subject entrance test in the sciences, not on category-wise minimum marks.

YSMU teaches a six-year, ECTS-based MD in General Medicine (12 semesters, 60 credits a year), moving from basic sciences to full clinical training in the university hospitals, taught in English and leading to the qualification 'MD Physician', which is equivalent to an MBBS.

Legacy
From the medieval physician it is named after to modern physician-leaders of the Armenian state, YSMU's legacy runs through the history of Armenian medicine.
The university's namesake, a 12th-century physician regarded as the father of Armenian medicine. Working in the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, he wrote the encyclopedic 'Relief of Fevers' in vernacular Armenian, and his writings on 'living factors' in disease are seen as foreshadowing the idea of microorganisms centuries before they were confirmed.
A YSMU-trained paediatric surgeon who went on to serve as President of the National Assembly of Armenia. His career bridges decades of children's surgery and national public life, and he is one of the university's most prominent physician-statesmen.
A pharmacologist and surgeon who served as Minister of Health of Armenia. His work in pharmacology and health administration helped shape the country's modern medical system.
A physician-scientist and YSMU graduate who became the founding managing director of Biobank Graz in Austria, one of the world's largest clinical biobanks, and has worked at Cedars-Sinai in the United States, showing the international reach of the university's graduates.
The Israeli Nobel laureate in Chemistry who discovered ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation, an honorary doctorate recipient of YSMU, reflecting the university's links to leading figures in world medicine and science.

Housing
YSMU runs its own student hostels in Yerevan, and most Indian students start there before moving to shared private apartments in later years.
The university runs its own hostels across three buildings in the Kanaker-Zeytun district of Yerevan, open to students of any nationality, with 24-hour security and a resident medical centre.
Rooms are furnished and shared by two to three students, with shared kitchens and bathrooms, reading halls, a computer room with free internet, a laundry and a dining hall where breakfast is provided.
A standard hostel room costs about AMD 90,000 per month in total, split between roommates — roughly ₹8,000–₹12,000 per student — with more comfortable rooms at about AMD 120,000. It is among the cheapest student housing of any medical destination.
Living in the university hostel is the recommended option for first-year Indian students: it is supervised, close to fellow students and removes the stress of finding private housing on arrival.
Hostel places are requested through the university's International Students' Department after admission; because demand is high, students should confirm a place as early as possible.
In later years many Indian students move into shared private flats across Yerevan, which are inexpensive by European standards and easy to find near the campus and hospitals.
Private rents are typically quoted plus utilities; Yerevan's low cost of living keeps heating, internet and everyday essentials affordable even in the cold winter months.
Yerevan has a continental climate with cold, sometimes snowy winters, so students should budget for warm clothing and heating — a real adjustment for students coming from most parts of India.

Food & Dining
Indian and vegetarian food is easily available in restaurants, grocery stores and hostels across Yerevan.
YSMU hostels have shared kitchens and a dining hall serving breakfast, and the campus has cafés and canteens; cooking in the hostel kitchen is the cheapest way for Indian students to eat familiar vegetarian food.

Practising in India
To practise medicine in India after graduating from Yerevan State Medical University, Indian students follow the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Because YSMU is a WDOMS-listed, English-taught six-year programme, it meets the NMC's core criteria, and students must have qualified NEET-UG before joining.
Step 1
Graduates must clear the qualifying examination that licenses foreign medical graduates to practise in India. At present this is the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which the NMC plans to replace with the National Exit Test (NExT).
Step 2
After qualifying, students complete the required one-year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) in India. Under the NMC's 2021 regulations the internship is expected at the same institution abroad, so Indian students should confirm how YSMU's clinical/internship year maps to this requirement.
Step 3
The final step is registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the relevant State Medical Council. Once registered, the graduate holds a full licence to practise medicine in India.
