Grant Medical College Mumbai, now called Grant Government Medical College, is a Maharashtra government college with 250 MBBS seats. First-year fees for 2026 are Rs. 1,80,970 for Open and All India Quota students. Counselling is still running: the MCC Round 3 result is due on 30 September 2026, and the state Round 3 list on 11 October 2026.

Grant Medical College Mumbai is a Government of Maharashtra medical college in Byculla, South Mumbai. It now uses the name Grant Government Medical College. The NMC list of colleges teaching MBBS gives its college code as MH/048/G/1 and its year of inception as 1845. NMC, the National Medical Commission, is the body that regulates every medical college in India.

The college is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, which awards the degree. Admissions to its state seats run through the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra and the Maharashtra State CET Cell. Clinical teaching happens at the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals on the same campus.

How many MBBS seats does Grant Medical College Mumbai have in 2026?

Grant Medical College Mumbai has 250 MBBS seats. The NMC record shows the college was recognised for 200 seats. It was allowed to add 50 seats under the EWS quota from 2019 to 2020, taking it to 250. EWS means Economically Weaker Sections, a reservation for lower income families who are outside other reserved groups. NMC granted annual renewal for 250 seats for 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026.

The state quota seats are split by category. In the 2026 seat matrix, 35 general seats and 17 women's seats are Open, and 25 general and 12 women's seats are OBC. OBC means Other Backward Classes. SC, ST, VJ, NT, SEBC and EWS seats make up the rest, with further seats for defence, disability and hilly area candidates. Who is eligible for MBBS at Grant Medical College Mumbai?

Every candidate must qualify NEET UG 2026. After that, the rules depend on which pool of seats you apply for.

All India Quota eligibility

Any NEET qualified Indian student can apply for the 38 All India Quota seats, whatever their home state. You register with MCC on the MCC UG medical counselling portal. Maharashtra students can apply for these seats as well as the state seats.

Maharashtra state quota eligibility

The Maharashtra NEET UG 2026 information brochure sets these conditions for the 210 state quota seats:

• Nationality: you must be an Indian national. OCI candidates qualify only under narrow conditions set out in clause 4.1.2.

• Domicile: you must hold a Maharashtra domicile certificate.

• Schooling: you must have passed both Class 10 (SSC) and Class 12 (HSC) from an institution in Maharashtra. A student who passed Class 10 outside Maharashtra in 2017 or earlier can still apply with Class 12 from Maharashtra and a domicile certificate.

• Age: you must be born on or before 31 December 2009.

• Class 12 marks: at least 50 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together for Open and EWS candidates, 40 per cent for reserved and SEBC candidates, and 45 per cent for general category PwD candidates.

• Medical fitness: you must submit a medical fitness certificate in the prescribed format (Annexure H).

Who cannot apply for the state quota

Rule 4.18 of the brochure covers students without Maharashtra domicile who passed Class 10 or Class 12 outside the state. They are not eligible for state seats. The exceptions are narrow, such as some defence and MKB (disputed border area) cases. For everyone else, the route into Grant Medical College Mumbai is the All India Quota.

How does MBBS admission at Grant Medical College Mumbai work?

There is no college entrance test or interview. Your NEET UG rank, category and domicile decide the seat. The college's own brochure says it has not appointed any agency, and admission is only through the MCC portal and the State CET portal.

State quota steps

1. Register on the State CET Cell NEET UG 2026 portal and pay the non-refundable fee. It is Rs. 1,000 for state quota seats only, or Rs. 6,000 if you also want institute quota seats in private colleges.

2. Upload colour scans of all original documents and click submit. Forms not submitted in time are rejected.

3. Check the provisional merit list and raise any grievance within the window given.

4. Fill your college preferences, placing Grant Medical College Mumbai where you want it. Fresh choices are needed in each round.

Round 3 rules that catch families out

• A Round 3 state seat must be joined. Anyone allotted a seat in state CAP Round 3 is dropped from later rounds, whether they join or not.

• An All India Round 3 seat blocks the state round. A candidate who has joined a seat in MCC Round 3 is removed from the state Round 3 list, even if they filled choices.

• Old choices do not carry over. Round 2 preferences are void, so every Round 3 candidate fills fresh choices.

What are the MBBS fees at Grant Medical College Mumbai for 2026?

The first-year fee for 2026 to 2027 is Rs. 1,80,970 for Open category state students and for all All India Quota students, reserved or not. This is set out in the Grant Government Medical College UG admission brochure 2026. Maharashtra students in reserved categories, and Open category students whose parents earn Rs. 8 lakh a year or less, pay far lower fees.

Other fees of Rs. 12,620 cover the development fund (Rs. 5,000), caution money deposit (Rs. 3,000), library deposit (Rs. 2,000), admission fee (Rs. 1,500), gymkhana and Ashvamedh fees, and small MUHS charges. An income certificate for 2025 to 2026 is compulsory for anyone claiming the lower fee.

How to pay the fee

The college asks for two demand drafts in favour of "Dean, Grant Government Medical College Mumbai", payable at Mumbai. One is for Rs. 1,68,350 (tuition and library) and one for Rs. 12,620 (other fees). Card and QR code payment is also available. Cash and cheques are not accepted. A draft with any spelling error in the name is rejected.

• School records: the Class 10 passing certificate, the Class 12 mark sheet and the Class 12 passing certificate.

• Identity: an Aadhaar card copy and a PAN card, driving licence or passport copy.

• Allotment letter: the provisional allotment letter generated online.

• Leaving certificate: the school leaving or transfer certificate.

• Medical fitness: a certificate from a registered doctor in the prescribed format (Annexure H) only.

• Hostel declaration: compulsory for all students.

• Domicile certificate: for state quota students.

• Caste certificate and caste validity certificate: for reserved categories. Students from outside Maharashtra need a magistrate's letter where their state does not issue validity certificates.

• Non-creamy layer certificate valid up to 31 March 2027: for VJ, NT, OBC and SEBC students.

• EWS certificate for 2026 to 2027: in the Maharashtra format for state quota students.

• Income certificate for 2025 to 2026: for Maharashtra students claiming the lower fee.

• Migration certificate: for students from outside Maharashtra.

• Gap certificate: an affidavit on Rs. 100 stamp paper, if there is a gap in your education.

• PwD eligibility certificate from MCC, defence, hilly area, MKB or orphan certificates: where claimed.

A late fee of Rs. 50 per week per document applies to anything missing at admission. Scanned copies go to the college by email and on a pen drive.

What if something goes wrong at Grant Medical College Mumbai admission?

• If you leave the seat late: resigning after the prescribed date, so that the seat lapses, or not finishing the course, costs a non-refundable Rs. 10 lakh. This is rule 25.1 of the state brochure and applies to All India Quota students too.

• If you do not join a state Round 3 seat: you are not considered for any later state round.

• If a document is missing: the college may admit you on an undertaking to submit it within 15 days, with a late fee. Failing that, action can be taken against the admission.

• If you want to move college later: NMC rules do not allow migration to another medical college, and mutual transfers are not accepted.

Is there a bond after MBBS at Grant Medical College Mumbai?

No compulsory service bond applies to 2026 students. For years, Maharashtra government college MBBS graduates had to serve one year after internship. Clause 24.2 of the Maharashtra NEET UG 2026 information brochure now says that under Government Resolution MED 2026/C.R. 239/26/Edu-2, dated 23 July 2026, there is no one-year social responsibility service for these graduates.

What does the MBBS course at Grant Medical College Mumbai look like?

The college brochure gives the MBBS course as five and a half years, including a compulsory one-year internship. Teaching follows the NMC Competency Based Undergraduate Curriculum, used in every Indian medical college since the batch admitted in August 2019. Clinical training at the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals

Grant Medical College Mumbai students train at the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals on the Byculla campus. The college website lists 1,885 beds, 32 departments and more than 400 faculty. The college About Us page says the hospitals see about 1.2 million outpatients and 80,000 inpatients a year, from across Maharashtra and central India.

In plain terms, that is roughly 3,300 outpatients a day. A student sees a wide range of common and rare cases before internship. The same page lists 45 wards and 5 hostels on a campus of more than 40 acres.

Postgraduate seats at Grant Medical College Mumbai

The college courses page lists 307 broad speciality postgraduate seats and 36 super speciality seats. The largest are General Surgery (32), Anaesthesia (30), Pathology (30), General Medicine (22) and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (22). This matters to MBBS students because a large postgraduate body means more resident doctors teaching on the wards.
