INI-CET vs NEET PG 2026: Which Exam Gets You Into AIIMS

INI-CET vs NEET PG is not really a choice: they are two exams for two separate sets of seats. AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER Chandigarh, NIMHANS and SCTIMST fill their seats only through INI-CET, which covers 23 institutes and next runs on 1 November 2026. The NEET PG 2026 Information Bulletin lists all five as outside NEET PG admissions.

What is INI-CET, and what is NEET PG?

INI-CET stands for the Institutes of National Importance Combined Entrance Test. It is run by the Examination Section of AIIMS New Delhi, and it fills postgraduate seats at 23 institutes: the 19 AIIMS, JIPMER Puducherry, NIMHANS Bengaluru, PGIMER Chandigarh and SCTIMST Trivandrum. AIIMS New Delhi describes itself in the prospectus as "the sole authority for conduct of all aspects related to Combined Entrance Test such as application, conduct of exam, declaration of results, Seat Allocation".

NEET PG is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for postgraduate medical courses, run by NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. It fills MD, MS, DNB and PG Diploma seats everywhere else: government and private colleges through state counselling, and the 50 per cent All India Quota through the Medical Counselling Committee.

The NEET PG 2026 Information Bulletin settles the overlap question on page 5. Under the heading of institutions "not covered by centralized admissions for MD / MS seats through NEET-PG", it lists AIIMS New Delhi and other AIIMS, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER Puducherry, NIMHANS Bengaluru, and SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram. No NEET PG rank, however high, reaches those seats.

INI-CET vs NEET PG: the differences side by side

INI-CET vs NEET PG comes down to six practical differences. Everything else follows from these.

The paper structure is the part candidates underestimate. INI-CET splits its 200 questions into four parts of 50, and gives you 45 minutes for each part. Once a part's 45 minutes are gone, it locks. In the prospectus wording, "Access to visible active part to view/answer will be disabled once the allotted time of 45 minute expires". NEET PG does the same thing in five sections of 36 questions with 42 minutes each. Both exams punish a candidate who plans to come back to a hard question later.

Who is eligible for INI-CET, and how does it differ from NEET PG?

INI-CET eligibility is set out in Part A of the AIIMS prospectus, and it is stricter than NEET PG in one respect that catches people out: it asks for a minimum aggregate across all your MBBS professional examinations.

• Degree. An MBBS degree from a university recognised by the National Medical Commission, for MD, MS, DM six year, MCh six year and MD Hospital Administration. A BDS degree for MDS.

• Internship. The 12 month compulsory rotating internship must be completed on or before 31 January 2027 for the January 2027 session. The prospectus is blunt: "Candidates who will complete their internship after 31st January, 2027 are not eligible for Registration in this examination."

• Minimum marks. 55 per cent aggregate for everyone except SC and ST candidates, who need 50 per cent. PwBD candidates take the figure for their own category. For an Indian national with a foreign medical degree, FMGE marks are used instead.

• Registration. Provisional or permanent registration with the NMC, the DCI or a state council is required to register for the exam at all.

NEET PG 2026 set its internship cut-off at 30 September 2026 and asks for MBBS registration, but it sets no minimum aggregate. So a candidate who scraped through MBBS can sit NEET PG and cannot sit INI-CET. That single line decides the question for a lot of students before anything else does.

Neither exam requires the other. The INI-CET prospectus never mentions NEET PG, and the NEET PG bulletin never mentions INI-CET. They are separate from application to admission.

When is INI-CET January 2027 and what does it cost?

The INI-CET January 2027 session is open now, and the registration window closes well before most families start thinking about it. These dates come from AIIMS Admission Notice No. 148/2026 dated 2 September 2026.

The application fee is Rs. 4,000 for General, OBC non-creamy-layer, foreign national, OCI and sponsored applicants, and Rs. 3,200 for SC, ST and EWS applicants. Candidates with benchmark disabilities pay nothing. The fee is not refundable in any circumstance, and payment is by card or netbanking only. How do you apply for INI-CET, step by step?

INI-CET applications happen entirely on the AIIMS exam portal. In the prospectus wording, the portal "can be accessed from www.aiimsexams.ac.in>>Academic Course Tab >>and clicking on INI-CET", and each part of the process opens and closes on the dates above. Registration is a one-time process made up of basic information, qualification details, experience, images and the registration fee.

1. Register on the portal and complete the registration form. You enter basic details, your qualification and any experience. AIIMS keeps registration and completion of application as two separate stages, and you log back in with a Registration ID, password and code.

2. Upload three images. A photograph, a signature and a left thumb impression. This is the step that fails people. If the images do not match the specification on the portal’s upload tab, the prospectus says "the Registration form of the candidate will be rejected". The status of your uploaded images is shown when you log back in.

3. Pay the fee. Rs. 4,000 or Rs. 3,200 depending on category, by debit card, credit card or netbanking. It is never refunded.

4. Choose three states, in order of preference. The list of states appears only after the fee is paid. Allocation is first come, first allotted, and depends on computer nodes available in that state, which is why AIIMS advises applying early rather than on the last day.

5. Submit, then download the admit card on 26 October 2026. It comes from MyPage after logging in, and only to applicants who have completed every stage. Carry a printout.

Two choices harden the moment you submit. Your states "cannot be changed after Completion of Application", and AIIMS says its decision on centre and shift is final. Your category is equally fixed: a request to move from General to a reserved category is not entertained, nor is a switch between reserved categories such as SC to ST or OBC to EWS, and a PwBD candidate cannot change their sub-category of disability.

What documents do you need for INI-CET?

INI-CET asks for very little at application and a great deal at admission, and families often prepare the wrong list. The prospectus is explicit that applicants are "not required to submit other certificates" for qualifications, internship or reservation at the application stage, because "the veracity of the information provided by applicants shall be verified at the time of reporting and joining INIs after seat allocation".

What you upload when you apply, by 13 October 2026:

• Photograph, signature and left thumb impression, in the format the portal specifies. A wrong format means the registration form is rejected.

• Your SC, ST, OBC non-creamy-layer, EWS or PwBD certificate, if you are claiming a category. It must be uploaded on or before the last date of registration, not produced later.

• A scan of the OCI card, for OCI candidates. The earliest issued valid card must be uploaded, and uploading only a newer card is treated as false information.

• A sponsorship certificate or a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare NOC, for sponsored candidates and foreign nationals, by 30 October 2026. An NOC from the Ministry of External Affairs alone is not valid for INI-CET.

The category certificate dates catch people out every session. An OBC non-creamy-layer or EWS certificate has to be issued between 1 April 2026 and 13 October 2026 and be in the central government format. A certificate valid for your state rather than for central government posts is rejected even if a renewal application is pending. If a category certificate is not accepted, the candidature is simply treated as general category.

What you produce at admission, in original or duly attested copy, under Section 7 of Prospectus Part B:

• The paperwork from the process itself: offer letter, allocation letter, registration slip and the AIIMS admit card.

• Your MBBS or BDS record: mark sheets for the first, second and third professional examinations, and the degree certificate.

• Internship proof: the completion certificate, or a certificate from the head of your institution that you will complete the internship by 31 January 2027.

• Registration certificate, permanent or provisional, from the NMC, the DCI or a state council.

• Date of birth proof: the matriculation or higher secondary certificate, or a birth certificate.

• Category certificates again, if applicable, and for in-service candidates the relieving order in original from the appointing authority.

The consequence is printed plainly: a candidate who fails to submit these "will not be allowed to participate in subsequent stages of selection/admission process".

How many seats does INI-CET actually offer?

INI-CET seats are published institute by institute before each session's result. For the July 2026 session, the final seat position of 19 May 2026 listed seats at all 23 institutes, and the institute totals add up to 1,599. That is our own sum of the AIIMS figures, because AIIMS prints no grand total. A corrigendum on 9 June 2026 withdrew two seats, bringing it to 1,597.

Put that beside the 86,360 postgraduate medical seats India had in the 2025-26 academic year, a figure the Union Health Minister gave in the Lok Sabha and the Press Information Bureau published on 24 July 2026. INI-CET is roughly one seat in fifty. It is a small, sharp door, not an alternative route to a PG seat in general.

How does INI-CET counselling work, and what does a wrong move cost?

INI-CET counselling is shorter than NEET PG counselling and a great deal less forgiving. AIIMS runs a non-binding mock round, then at least two rounds, then an open round, all online. Seats go by merit, by your own choice order, and by each institute's reservation and institute-preference rules.

Three rules decide most outcomes, and each one is worth reading twice.

1. Your choices lock after Round 1. Choice filling closes with Round 1 and Round 2 runs on the same list. There is no second chance to add a college you left out.

2. You cannot refuse an allotted seat. The AIIMS brochure states that the option to refuse the allocated seat is not available. You accept and exit, or accept and try to upgrade.

3. Not joining costs Rs. 3 lakh. A candidate who is allotted or upgraded and does not join pays a penalty of Rs. 3 lakh. At reporting you either submit original certificates or deposit Rs. 3 lakh, and the open round required that deposit up front by bank transfer.

There is a fourth cost that sits beyond counselling and is worth knowing before you accept anything. Prospectus Part B says your original certificates are retained by the academic section and "will not be returned to the candidate before completion of the course" unless you deposit Rs. 3 lakh. It then sets compensation for leaving: a candidate who leaves within six months of joining pays Rs. 3 lakh, and one who leaves after six months pays Rs. 5 lakh.

NEET PG counselling works differently. MCC runs four rounds, allows a free exit in Round 1, and forfeits a security deposit of Rs. 25,000 for General and EWS candidates or Rs. 10,000 for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates from Round 2 onwards. The practical consequence is a timing problem rather than a rules problem. An INI-CET seat has to be accepted or let go on the AIIMS timetable, and Rs. 3 lakh is the price of changing your mind. Decide before you fill choices which institutes you would genuinely join.

What does INI-CET publish about cut-offs, and what does NEET PG publish?

INI-CET results come as a rank and a percentile, never as marks. AIIMS sets the qualifying bar at the 50th percentile for Unreserved, EWS, sponsored, foreign national and OCI candidates, and the 45th percentile for OBC, SC, ST and PwBD candidates. The result notification publishes every qualified candidate with their roll number, category, rank and percentile.

NEET PG publishes more. Your NEET PG 2026 scorecard carries a raw score out of 720 and an All India rank, and NBEMS published the qualifying marks by category: 262 for General and EWS at the 50th percentile, 244 for General PwBD at the 45th, and 226 for SC, ST and OBC at the 40th. So the two exams give you different tools. After NEET PG you know your mark, your rank and the qualifying line. After INI-CET you know your rank and your percentile, and you work out where you stand from the round-wise allotment lists AIIMS publishes.

Should you sit INI-CET, NEET PG, or both?

Most eligible candidates sit both, because the two exams open different doors and neither rules out the other. The decision is really about where your preparation goes in the last two months, and there the differences are concrete.

• Sit INI-CET if you clear the marks bar of 55 per cent, or 50 per cent for SC and ST candidates, and your internship finishes by the session's cut-off date. Without both, the application will not go through.

• Practise negative marking separately. INI-CET takes off one third of a mark for a wrong answer against a single mark for a right one. NEET PG takes off 1 against 4. Guessing behaviour that works in one exam loses you rank in the other.

• Watch the two internship cut-offs. NEET PG 2026 needed the internship done by 30 September 2026. INI-CET January 2027 needs it by 31 January 2027. A candidate finishing in December is eligible for one and not the other.

• Plan for the Rs. 3 lakh rule. If you intend to hold an INI-CET seat while waiting on NEET PG counselling, that is the number to budget for.

Conclusion

INI-CET vs NEET PG is not a choice between two ways into the same seats. It is two exams for two different seat pools, and the NEET PG bulletin itself confirms that AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER, NIMHANS and SCTIMST sit outside NEET PG entirely.

If those institutes are your goal, the INI-CET January 2027 registration closes on 13 October 2026 and the exam is on 1 November 2026. Check the 55 per cent aggregate first, then your internship date, then your council registration, and only then start preparing. And before you fill a single choice, decide which institutes you would actually join, because AIIMS does not let you refuse a seat and charges Rs. 3 lakh if you walk away from one.
