Introduction

Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine

Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine is the medical school of Mayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minnesota, with additional campuses in Arizona and Florida. It opened in 1972 and was renamed in 2018 after a $200 million gift from businessman Jay Alix that funds scholarships for MD students. It awards the MD (Doctor of Medicine), the US equivalent of the MBBS, and its teaching hospital, Mayo Clinic, is ranked the number one hospital in the United States by US News and World Report. Indian families should understand two things clearly. First, the MD is a graduate-entry degree: students must complete a bachelor's degree and pre-medical coursework, then sit the MCAT, before applying through the AMCAS system, so there is no direct entry after Class 12. Second, Mayo admits only a very small number of international students, and foreign nationals are generally eligible only if they can show eligibility to file the US FAFSA or to receive Canadian financial aid. A student applying from India normally cannot meet that condition, so this page is an honest informational profile rather than a route to apply to directly from India.

Academic Excellence

Why Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Is So Highly Regarded

Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine is built around one of the world's most respected medical institutions. These are the reasons it is so highly regarded, useful context even though it is not a practical route for students applying from India.

Built Around the US's #1 Hospital

Students learn at Mayo Clinic, ranked the number one hospital in the United States by US News and World Report for the 36th time, and the number one hospital in the world by Newsweek in 2026, offering exceptional clinical exposure.

Jay Alix Scholarship Support

A $200 million gift from businessman Jay Alix in 2018 funds substantial scholarships, so admitted MD students carry far less debt than the US average, with reported average debt well below the national figure.

Small, Highly Selective Class

Mayo admits a small class from a very large applicant pool, with an acceptance rate of roughly 2%, which supports close mentorship and individual attention from world-class clinicians.

Science of Health Care Delivery

Mayo pioneered the Science of Health Care Delivery, a longitudinal strand developed with Arizona State University that teaches students how to improve health systems, not just treat individual patients.

Three-Campus Model

The school spans Mayo Clinic campuses in Rochester (Minnesota), Arizona and Florida, giving students access to a large, integrated health system with a huge range of patients and specialties.

Team-Based Mayo Model of Care

Mayo is famous for its integrated, team-based, patient-first model of care and its unified medical record, pioneered over a century ago, which shapes how students learn to work in modern medicine.

Affordable Living in Rochester

Rochester, Minnesota is a smaller, affordable city compared with Boston, San Francisco or New York, so living costs for the main campus are considerably lower than at many top US medical schools.

Citizenship / Aid Eligibility

This is the decisive eligibility point for Indian students. Mayo admits only a small number of international students, and foreign nationals are generally eligible only if they can show, at the time of application, eligibility to file the US FAFSA or to receive Canadian federal or provincial financial aid. A student applying from India normally cannot meet this condition.

Requirements

Eligible applicants must submit the AMCAS application with MCAT scores, then complete the Mayo secondary application and interview. Selection is holistic, with strong weight on academics, research and service.

  • Entrance Exam

The MCAT is required for all applicants. The average matriculant score is about 521; there is no published minimum cutoff and there is no separate university entrance exam.

  • Aid Eligibility

Foreign nationals are generally eligible only if they can file the US FAFSA or receive Canadian financial aid, which is a significant barrier for applicants from India.

Entrance Examination

The Home of Integrated, Team-Based Care

Mayo Clinic pioneered the integrated, team-based group practice and the unified patient record, ideas that reshaped how modern medicine is organised. Its medical school teaches students to work within this coordinated, patient-first model from the start.

Clinical Innovation from Cortisone to Today

Mayo Clinic research produced landmark advances, including the isolation of cortisone, recognised with the 1950 Nobel Prize, and the rapid frozen-section diagnosis used in surgery worldwide. That tradition of clinical innovation continues today.

A Global Reputation, Limited Direct Admission

Mayo Clinic is known and respected worldwide and trains many international physicians at postgraduate and fellowship levels. Its MD programme, however, admits only a very small number of international students under strict aid-eligibility conditions, so it is not a direct study route for students applying from India.

Understand the Medical Licensing Pathway

A clear overview of the exams and requirements after graduation.

Practising in India

FMGE & NExT Details

An MD from an LCME-accredited US school such as Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine is accepted for the Indian licensing route, provided the graduate meets the NMC's foreign medical graduate criteria. In practice this applies to the small number of Indian-origin graduates who were eligible to study at Mayo.

  1. Step 1

    Screening Examination (FMGE / NExT)

Graduates must clear the qualifying examination that licenses foreign medical graduates to practise in India. This is currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which is transitioning to the National Exit Test (NExT).

  2. Step 2

    Clinical Internship (CRRI)

After qualifying, students complete a one-year Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) in India, gaining supervised clinical experience across the major departments.

  3. Step 3

    Medical Registration

The final step is registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the relevant State Medical Council, after which the graduate can practise as a doctor in India.
